Instead of the timed events on an iPhone app, why not measure yourself off of tried and true tests, like the various military PFTs (Physical Fitness Tests)? They are timed, and have standards, and you don't need a phone/MP3 player to tell you how well you did! (You might need a stopwatch, though.)
Battle Mode: Why not do "pyramids" with your training partner? You can do alot more range of exercises, and you are bound to get in far better shape than just push ups. You're only working one part of your body with that, as opposed to "Pyramids", which can work out various/most parts of your body (And it isn't as boring as just doing push ups.
Frankly, I don't see how one could get truly fit doing one range activities, when your body requires "muscle confusion" to stay fit. Push ups are a start, but it by no means is the overall answer to fitness, when there are other (arguably better) alternatives, like dips, pull-ups, etc.
Last note: It times you... But it doesn't gauge you on your form, if you are truly "breaking the plain", and other factors that others would qualify as a real push up.
I admire the fact that others want to get/stay fit. But there are better alternatives out there than this.
