This... this has been around for quite some time now Brian. At least in Canada. The Lego Batman/Pure bundle has been around for at least a month, and on the shelf of my Walmart next door. #deals
I guess it's a good deal for the US but honestly there are better deals than that available even now. Though I guess this is just to replace Kung Fu Panda and lego Indy kit.
Last year's bundle was Lego Indiana Jones (fun) and Kung-Fu Panda (haven't touched it yet). This is an upgrade.
So far, the best bundle was Forza 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance.
The best part of these bundles is that they send prices at GameStop falling like a rock. GameStop has most of the previous pack-in bundles (with both games in one case) for $10 or less, and I'd expect this one to be cheap once they get flooded with copies of it.
@plebeianprint: Lego Batman is actually already cheap. It's $20 at a lot of places, and occasionally cheaper than that. I got my copy for $10 new at Game Crazy a few weeks back (although that may have been a sale price), and I thought it was worth it. The Lego games are fun platformers, use their licenses well, and the co-op is great, even (especially?) if you're playing with a non-gamer.
1. You have a choice of Pure or Lego Batman in terms of holiday bundles. What crappy games (although Pure is marginally debatable in my opinion and in most others, although a minority might disagree).
2. Save $50 on the console, and lose that deal plus $20 additional dollars for the lower-end Wifi adapter, a feature that comes built into the Wii and PS3 out-of-the-box, assuming you want your console to have what most other consoles come standard with. Nice.
3. Assuming you need HDMI cables and want the "official" Microsoft HDMI cables (or maybe you're just the AVERAGE consumer who doesn't know better to get them online for cheap), prepare to put down an extra $50 dollars (if the cables happen to be on sale). Dent my wallet some more!
4. Don't let the fun stop yet, put down an additional $50 for one year of Xbox Live, and make that a recurring cost for every additional year you plan on playing online games, which is something a LOT (but not all) gamers do nowadays. Classy. Oh, by the way, the Wii and PS3 let you do these for free.
5. You might want to make your home wireless network less secure by using WEP encryption instead of WPA or WPA2 which you probably use now, because the Wireless G adapter only supports WEP, which can be cracked with Aircrack-ng under Windows or Linux in about 5 minutes. Who wants to be secure? Not me, that's for sure! Oh, you want to use Wireless N instead because their Wireless N adapter handles WPA and WPA2? No problem! Just plunk down $100 instead of $80! Problem solved!
6. Make sure to buy the extended warranty, because that RROD is ready to give you a warm fuzzy feeling inside, chances are, more than once.
Wow, I can own an Xbox 360 with all the features of a PS3 for only a couple of hundred dollars (tax drives overall cost higher) more! I'm so happy! And only for a limited time!
Oh, and make sure to buy a PS3 and/or a Wii while you're at it, because your 360 will be spending most of its time in a Microsoft service center. You'll need something to keep yourself entertained until it gets back, works for about a month, then prepares for yet another grand journey back there again!

i put down 120 for a used xbox, then the xbox live as you stated, and one could get a game for 20. don't need wireless. hasn't broken. been playing and loving it for $200
you'd think if it was that big of a deal, it wouldn't be selling so well.. no matter how dumb you may think it is, pointing these things out to use (which i assure you have been done countless times already) is useless
@brass2themax: @brass2themax: Yo, fanboy. I'm really happy for you, and I'mma let you finish, but 2006 had the greatest "omg tree-sickstee r 'spensiver lol!" rants of all time!
(So sorry to perpetuate that meme. But it was right there.)

@TikkiEXX: He did, but it was a prank we from the Sony fanclub pulled on him. The merit badge was actually made of peanut butter, which he happens to be very allergic to.
I'm kind of disappointed with the bundles though. I was planning to buy a 360.
Still am, really. But I'm probably not getting that bundle.

@Teh Emo Penguin: The Lego games aren't all that challenging, but they're pure fun. I have Indiana Jones and Batman for my 360, and enjoyed both (although the first was free, and the second was $10). Same for Star Wars.
@ithyphallus, lazy beareaucrat: Why are so many people like you idiots, trying to be funny by repeating something that was never funny to begin with, and is even less funny after a herd of idiot sheeps before you repeating it over and over? Can you not think of anything original to say?
Someone should let Black Rock studios know about Burnout Paradise or Motorstorm: PR. Then again, with Pure it seemed like they had nobody to tell them they overdid the bloom lighting, and that SSX basically did the whole racing + tricks formula better.
This screen looks cool though, hopefully it turns out to be worthwhile.
I didn't really notice since I tend to play a good racer forever, but I guess it has been a while since I got a new one...
I've been playing GT5P, Wipeout HD, Wipeout Pulse, Tourist Trophy, and occasionally Burnout Paradise, Ridge Racer 7, and races in GTA4. I tried Project Torque, but... what bizarro physics. I was drifting around like a madman in a 100hp FF...
I'm looking forward to Split Second, but never tried Pure...
Burnout Paradise is hands down the best, most enjoyable racing game I've ever played. Even getting platinum was fun from beginning to end. Too bad other PS3 developers seem to have forgotten that the game should "fun" while getting those trophies. Go figure.
Wipeout HD suffers from the fact that none of the tracks are new, the AI cheats, barrel rolls performed with a left-right-left or vice versa on the analog stick is...well...damn stupid (great way to kill your racing line in a tight race) and the game just isn't fun at the higher levels.
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is still one of the best and it's not even finished. It sucks because...well...it's not even finished.
F-zero GX is STILL better than Wipeout (HD included) because it offers better track design, more tracks, 30 cars on-screen and customization. It should go down as one of the best futuristic racers made. (To be fair, Extreme G2 has better track design than Wipeout.)
MotorStorm/Motorstorm2 two of the best rally games you can buy...
Racing dying? Don't think so. Too many crap racing games in the genre? Of course, but how would that be different than any other genre at any given time?
@Billkwando bought his tickets for Hyde's US tour: If racing is dying, it's because of reviewers and people who levy strikes against a game for being short, meaning that you see most of the content within the first few plays. It's what has killed beat-em ups and shooters, and it's what could easily kill racers as well. Thanks to RPGs and modern adventure fair, the concept of replayability is getting forgotten, replaced by hours of doing mindless repetitive tasks.
There is a big crowd who enjoy serious racing sims, or at least realistic feeling-ish games with licensed vehicles and real-life locations (like Forza, and even TDU). And there's the driving games that are just out there, purely for gaming, like Burnout. Sadly, the game developers haven't found a happy medium in which you can have both serious racing and nonsensical fun. Why can't the give us options so that we can pick different driving physics and selectable environmental effects?
My ideal driving game would be the openness of TDU, the insanely wide range cars of the Gran Turismo, and the replay engine from GRID, and an optional batsh*t mode based on Motorstorm. Is that too much to ask?
...I guess it is. Now days, non-committed developers pump out mediocre driving games every year for marginal profits. Bah.
@Ash69: I am one of those who enjoy real racing sim, not this street racing crap where you can turn win a race without braking. Formula 1: Championship Edition can be a pretty hardcore game. That and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue are pretty tough games because they are real. I feel that the hardcore sim need to be revived...too many bs street racers these days.
@turbofreak: Well. With GT5 and Forza 3 in the pipelines and no release dates on the horizon, we'll have to make do. I have an inkling that not a lot of people on Kotaku are serious driving game enthusiasts, which is perfectly fine.
@turbofreak: I agree, although even the hardcore racing games can still be made accessible to a wide range people with different modes, control schemes and difficulty settings. I think Gran Turismo 5 may manage this upon release. Gran Turismo 5: Prologue was certainly very promising.
I'd also like to see the street racer genre we have today move back towards the genre's roots. The early Need For Speed games were great for the time and some of the older marque specific titles like Porsche Challenge, Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge we great fun. I think Test Drive Unlimited tried to do a modern sucessor to these titles, but unfortunately ended up failing in various other ways.
