In its first two weeks on sale, the redesigned portable sold 500,000 units. That's a lot! The total count as of October 3rd is 580,000. Likewise, a lot! The PSP Slim is even outselling the original PSP when it was launched back in 2004. And with Hot Shots Golf Portable 2 hitting the PSP this December, the Slim and Lite juggernaut shows no signs of slowing down. Yup, year's later, the PSP is gaming's comeback kid.

<![CDATA[Japanese PSP Slim Ads Cut the Advertising Fat]]> Last week, the PSP Slim and Lite went on sale in Japan. A new series of ads did a fine job of promoting the portable, which is raking up some impressive sales figures. I really like these ads, which show off different aspects of the PSP. They're simple, to the point and not all fucked up. I hate fucked up Sony ads so hard.

More after the jump.

<![CDATA[Drinking Free Joe In Ritzy Ginza With PSP2K]]> Nothing says portable gaming like free coffee! Or something. Starting today in the Ginza Sony Building, you can get free coffee and stare at TV playing on PSP 2Ks. The portable's Japan only TV tuner outputs a fairly nice picture — as nice as the TV phones. The PSP Cafe runs until the 16th. Those who live in Tokyo, swing by and check it out. Those who don't, don't.

<![CDATA[Korea Gives Masterclass In PSP Slim Advertising]]> Classy! Here is a print ad for the new slim and lite PSP that does a nice job of emphasizing it's lighter. This ad is way easier to grasp than Japan's towel twisting. What's more, it's also cheaper in Korea! The portable is marked down to 178,000 (approx. US $190). It really is lighter.

<![CDATA[PSP2K Tear Down]]> Sure, the PSP2K doesn't go on sale in Japan until September 20th, but that doesn't mean you can't yet buy a new PSP Slim. Hong Kong models are on sale in Akihabara for ¥27,000 (US $234)! Nerd site Akiba Blog picked one up and dissected it. And guess what? It's innards look pretty much like a regular old PSP. Click below for the grisly gallery.

<![CDATA[Limited Edition PSP2k Hits Today]]>

If you've been holding out for a Playstation Portable 2000 now's the day to hit up your local retailer. The limited-edition Daxter PSP Entertainment Pack just went on sale for $200. The pack includes a "Ice Silver" PSP2K, a copy of Daxter; Family Guy — The Freakin' Sweet Collection on UMD and a 1GB Memory Stick PRO Duo.

"PSP sales have soared since we introduced the $169.99 price point in April, and that momentum will only continue with the launch of the newly designed PSP, which has generated strong interest among consumers since we announced it at E3," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "With our growing software library, which includes more than 140 new releases in the pipeline this fiscal year, the PSP platform is poised for significant growth. The Daxter Entertainment Pack offers a great opportunity for consumers to jump in to PlayStation(R) Portable experience with content that demonstrates the multi-functionality of the system, all for a great value."

SCEA is also rolling out three accessories for the new PSP today:

— Component AV Cable for video out, approximately 8.2 feet long ($19.99 MSRP)
— AV Cable for video out, approximately 8.2 feet long ($19.99 MSRP)
— Headphones with Remote Control ($29.99 MSRP)

If Daxter and Family Guy aren't your thing you should hold off until later this month with the PSP2K goes on sale solo for $170. Or you could wait till next month to grab up he Star Wars Battlefront edition of the new slederized PSP for $200.

If you're too lazy to look for yourself, here's a link to Best Buy.

<![CDATA[Lair Playing on My PSP2K]]>

Here's the video proof of Lair Remote Play for you non-believers out there. The major issue, as I mentioned before, is that you have no L2 or R2 buttons, so no braking in the game, which can make things a bit difficult at times, but the game is still very playable. I friggin love this. Lets hope this isn't something Sony will be "fixing" anytime soon.

As for the gameplay, it seems as smooth but the graphics by comparison are atrocious. I mean, playing this game on a big screen high-def TV with surround sound is spectacular, visually at least. Also, the lack of L2 and R2 buttons really causes issues. You can't, for instance, land. Which just plain sucks. Personally, I have not problem controlling the dragon with the motion controls, but if that's a big issue for you, then I'm sure you'd prefer this method because the controls are silky smooth. Of course the oodles of required motion attacks in the game make it impossible to play it this way without getting hung up.... a lot.

The key thing to remember here is that this could very well be a sign of things to come. Can you imagine being able to play any of your PS3 games on your PSP anywhere in the world? Sure it's graphically watered down and their may be some button mapping issues, but it's certainly worth it to carry the game around in your pocket.

<![CDATA[Play Lair on Your PSP]]> remotelair.JPG

The mounting buzz on the Playstation forums are true, you can play Lair on your PSP using Remote Play. Well, you can sorta play Lair on your PSP using Remote Play. Unfortunately the PSP does not have the R2 or L2 buttons, so you can't brake, but who needs to brake anyway. Sure it makes the end bosses and many of the levels a lot easier, but honestly, not that big a deal.

If you do want to do this make sure you play through the tutorial level first because unless you can brake it won't let you continue through the training and get to the meat of the game. Check back in a bit for our video of this in action on the PSP2K.

<![CDATA[PSP2K Playing Video and Games]]>

Two videos, TWO! for the price of one. The first shows video playback on your television using a composite cable and the PSP2K. The second, on the jump, shows gameplay on the television using the same set-up.

<![CDATA[PSP 2K Video Walkthrough]]>

This video is a quick walkthrough of the new PSP, showing off some of the external key differences like the new UMD loading tray, the new Memory Stick cover, the battery and such. I've also shot a bunch of comparison shots, including some showing the PSP versus PSP2K versus DS Lite screens' brightness. It's hard to tell, but the PSP 2K's screen looks a touch brighter than the PSP's.

A couple of things from the press release:

Video-out Port: Play and watch your library of PSP games, movies, videos and photos on the big screen. The new video out feature displays games on progressive scan TVs at 480 x 272 resolution, while movies, videos and photos can be shown at full standard definition (up to 720 x 480 resolution.) Component or composite cables required and available separately.

The Daxter PSP Pack comes with a silver PSP2K, a copy of Daxter, the Family Guy: The Freakin' Sweet Collection on UMD and a 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo for $200. Available in early September.

The Star Wars Battlefront PSP Pack comes with a limited edition white PSP with Darth Vader silk-screened on the back and a copy of Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron for $200. Available on Oct. 9.

The PSP Core pack comes with a black PSP 2K, the AC adapter and battery pack for $170. Available in early September.

Hopefully that answers most of your questions.

<![CDATA[Some Menu Differences on the PSP2K]]> DSC00990.JPG

I'm still tinkering around with the settings and such on the PSP Slim that just arrived at the house, but I wanted to get a quick post up about some of the differences I've noticed in the settings and such.

The game ships with firmware 3.60 preloaded on the system. There are a lot of menu differences but I found two in the system menu.

UMD Cache: If you set it on you can reduce the frequency at which the system reads from the UMD.
USB Charge: Allows you to charge using USB instead of a A/C.

The system now also has a new menu in Settings that gives you options for when you connect your PSP to your television to either play games or watch a movie.

Connected Display settings
Switch Video Output: You can use this to display video on the television or you can hold in the display button.
TV Type: 16:9 or 4:3
Component /D-Terminal Cable: Lets you select either progressive or interlace output.
Screensaver: Lets you set the timeout for a screensaver from none to 15 minutes.

I still have to play test the thing, check out the video output and compare the screens. More to come.
