Also, I lol'd at the image. Is that your kind, Brian? ;)

Great shirt. My girlfriend years ago had a little brother that heard me listening to the Dead Kennedy's song, Too Drunk to Fuck. The next week the 15 year old bought a DK shirt with a drunk guy at a bar and the words too drunk to fuck on it. The parents were friggen religious fanatics and they freaked.
I was never allowed to be around that house ever again after the kid told where he got the idea for purchasing that shirt.

"the least popular present this Christmas are video game consoles".
There are more than those 10 things on the list that a kid could want for Xmas......, so it's at the bottom of the top 10 list, not the "least" out of all the presents a kid could get.

If they had seperated the series, they could have made the franchise co-exist peacefully on both platforms.
That being said, I'm looking forward to grabbing this on PSP, I haven't a PS3 (yet) so I haven't had a chance to sit down and get stuck into the first game but what I've seen has made me really want to play it.

At this point I've taken a break from it, actually... but I will finish it someday. The story is great and I cannot get over the art.

It's funny that you say you've left it down though, I think everyone I know that has played the game has yet to finish it because they stopped playing (for what reason however, I don't know).

Spoilers
Using Rose (or any Shocktrooper) place her on the defense camp left slot. Run through the left alley. Then Hug the wall on the way to the capture camp and just kill the two guarding it and you'll have enough movement points (and space) to capture the base.

There's a balance in here that I'm not sure I can explain, but I think the answer is to not make grinding a necessity due to 'difficulty' of your game when someone plays it straight through.
But, who knows, I've been grinding my whole RPG life (FF series, Blue Dragon 100% complete, DAoC, WoW, a ton I have forgotten, and now... VC), so just add this to the list, I suppose.

I'm only on Chapter 7 (I popped it in for... I dunno, 10-20 hours over a couple of weekends), and in that short amount of time I can't tell you how many times I fell asleep during the battles. A good 3 or 4, surely.
VC really does remind me of tower defense games, in that it's 'nice' to finish a chapter and move the story along, but the real challenge is in putting together the perfect strategic team to get the best grade possible on the level.
I'm not a fan of tower defense games, so maybe I should have expected this?

Of course what I described earlier is an exploit but I can't imagine getting an S rank without it. As the method described earlier takes one turn but doing it properly takes at least 2 which results in an A rank.
Whatever the case this thread has made me want to start playing it again. I'm gonna go back to it tomorrow and play it properly (think i got to chapter 6).

Maybe that'll result in a couple of more 'breaks' and I won't finish until Fall 2010, but that's ok, I have a large backlog.

So, the game is being rushed out to ride on the anime's gravy train. I'm now expecting a product that is no better than Avatar: The Video Game.

It seems Sega's intention is to make this a full blown IP franchise, and even if I won't buy the sequel because I don't have a PSP, it means that unless the PSP version tanks, I have a pretty good chance at having another shot at a future PS3 version. Having an anime tie in is no different than any other tie in. And if anything, it promotes greater awareness of the franchise which in turn promotes greater sales, which in turn promotes... well, let's just say it's not a bad thing if you want an IP to live on.

1. Valkyria Chronicles was a video game before it was an anime. It already has preexisting assets unlike show-to-game types and so the only concern one should really have is how the gameplay of a PS3 game can translate into a PSP game. From what I've heard, it works out pretty well.
2. The final episode of the anime was back in September, the 26th to be exact. For Japan, this game isn't coming out until January 10th, 2010. Wouldn't you say that's a bit late to be hopping aboard the "gravy train?"

"Also, with the broadcast of the TV anime we really wanted to get the game out before the impact of the anime subsides."
So, yes. Straight from their mouths.
12/08/09
I don't think so.
It sounds as though they want to keep a consistent flow. This isn't like with a movie game where a developer will crap shoot a game right near the time of the movie release. So far (in Japan) there was the first game, then months later there was the anime. Now, months later, there will be the PSP sequel.
Heck, lets not forget the game is going to have cutscenes with the animation from the anime. It's not that they're rushing the game, but if I'm not mistaken, it's to keep Valkyria Chronicles in a steady consistency. Honestly I don't think they need to, but considering it is Japan, there are likely to be other popular media that will overshadow the franchise if it isn't always popping up.

Well, girls are japanese children too, and there are some boys who would be interested.
Much to parental disappointment in all likelihood.
