<![CDATA[Limited Edition Gran Turismo PSP Comes With Music Voucher]]> The Limited Edition Gran Turismo Entertainment Pack, announced for Japan last month, is coming to the U.S. on Oct. 20 and brings with it an interesting freebie.

The $200 pack will include a "mystic silver" PSP-3000 (that's not the PSPGo), a copy of Gran Turismo PSP, an exclusive car download, a Playstation Network movie voucher, a 2GB Memory Stick PRO Duo and a music voucher.

I believe this may be the first time Sony is including a music voucher with a PSP bundle. The music voucher is good for 10 free songs from Sony Music Pass. The odd thing is that they need to be downloaded to your PC or Mac, and apparently can't be directly downloaded to your PSP. I sure hope that this is a sign that feature is coming though.

Other details:

Gran Turismo for the PSP features more than 800 vehicle models from the world's top manufacturers with more than 4,500 total paint variations, and 35 tracks . The game, which runs at 60 frames per second, also allows gamers to trade and share unlocked vehicles with others online via ad hoc mode.
Car download - Includes an exclusive PlayStation Network voucher to download a white version of the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 for Gran Turismo, the same car featured on the cover of the game.
PlayStation Network movie voucher - Consumers can easily download a movie from the PlayStation Network to their PSP system. Title to be announced.
2GB Memory Stick PRO Duo - Leverages the PSP system's multimedia functionality by storing photos, music, videos, and game saves.

In Japan, the bundle includes a copy of Gran Turismo PSP and a PSP-3000, which is black with a Gran Turismo logo on the front. Pricing for the bundle, which is due out there on October 1, has not yet been announced.

<![CDATA[A PSP For Gran Turismo Fans]]> The old PSP is going out with a bang in Japan later this year, with the October release of a special Gran Turismo PSP hardware bundle.

The bundle includes a copy of Gran Turismo PSP and a PSP-3000, which is black with a wee little Gran Turismo logo on the front. Pricing for the bundle is yet to be announced, but if you want the UMD version of the game, it'll cost ¥5480 (USD$58), or you can get a voucher for a download of the game for ¥4190 (USD$44).

The bundle is out on October 1. Importers, you know what to do.

<![CDATA[PSP-3000 Goes Blossom Pink, Turquoise Green]]> Showing continued support for the older model despite the impending release of the PSP Go, Sony has announced two new colors for the PSP-3000: Blossom Pink and Turquoise Green. Behold their beauty.

The two new models of the PSP-3000 are due out in November, a month after the release of the PSP Go. It should be interesting to see how they sell as compared to the newer, UMD-less version of the hardware. Both Blossom Pink and Turquoise Green will be available for standalone purchase, with the green version also available as part of a LittleBigPlanet PSP bundle.

Thank god I didn't pick up the lavender PSP-3000. I would have felt horrible, what with pink right around the corner.

<![CDATA[Analyst: Sony's $249 PSPgo Is "Too Much"]]> PSPgo, the newest addition to the PlayStation family, will carry a premium price of $249 USD when it launches this October. That's $80 more than the PSP-3000, a figure considered too high by some gamers—and one analyst.

That analyst is Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter, who commented on the most recent episode of GameTrailers' Bonus Round that "$249 is too much. Period." Pachter agreed with host Geoff Keighley that Sony is "ripping off the consumer" at that price point, claiming that the PSPgo costs less to make than the already profitable PSP-3000. Sony, on the other hand, thinks it's priced appropriately.

We talked to Pachter today to get more of his thoughts on the device and its asking price.

Michael Pachter says that Sony execs "made it clear that the PSP Go pricing strategy was intended to compete with the iPod Touch."

"I don't disagree with them that the comparison is favorable from a technology perspective, so I can't fault their logic," Pachter said."However, the iPod Touch has a ridiculously loyal fan base, tremendous brand awareness, gigantic advertising support, a touch screen, an app store, and a LOT of music."

But the PSP is not an iPod Touch, despite sharing some capabilities. Its strengths lie in its gaming functions, Pachter admits.

"The PSP Go has a better gaming architecture and better games, but lacks many of the features that the iPod Touch has," he said via e-mail. "In my view, its price should be compared to the PSP 3000, which does pretty much all the same things and is $80 cheaper."

Pachter said during his Bonus Round screen time that pricing the new PSP at a price above the Xbox 360 Arcade and at the Wii's price point was reflective of the handheld costing too much.

"I just am not going to pull punches and say that the price of the PSP Go is justified, since I don't think it will work at that level," the analyst said. "If it cost them $80 more, I would not have answered Keighley the same way. However, I think it costs the same or less to produce, so the increase in price means an increase in profit at the expense of the consumer. I think that Apple rips off consumers as well (look at THEIR profits), but wasn't asked that question."

Sony's John Koller has said over the past week that the device will carry a higher profit margin for retailers, a tactic I inferred as reflective of the higher suggested retail price. But Pachter disagreed.

"I don't think it has anything to do with retail, and truly think that Sony is right to charge what the market will bear," Pachter said. "The fact is that Sony has been subsidizing the cost of the PS3 since launch, so to say that they are 'ripping off' consumers now is not really fair, and if I could retract the statement, I would do so."

But the Wedbush Morgan analyst believes the product will sell, even at that price.

"I think that they genuinely believe that the market will support this price point, I just happen to disagree. It's hard to believe that Sony is giving much away to GameStop, perhaps they are allowing a 15% margin instead of the more typical 6 – 10%, but most of the "profit" on the device will go into Sony's coffers."

<![CDATA[Sony Drop Kicks PSP-3000's 4GB Entertainment Pack]]> Some of you wrote to us this weekend wondering why the hell Amazon (or the online retailer of your choosing) canceled your PSP-3000 pre-order. Well, if you were one of the dozens, if not hundreds, who opted for the 4GB Memory PSP Entertainment Pack — which featured a PSP 3000 and 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo — Sony canceling the release of said Entertainment Pack is the reason why. No, they're not abandoning the thing entirely to fix that little screen issue.

SCEA's John Koller, director of hardware marketing, explains on the company's official blog that the publisher is "streamlining our PSP hardware lineup" in light of "significant interest in the Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters PSP Entertainment Pack" here. We're guessing 4GB Memory Sticks aren't as sexy as Sony once though.

Should you be all set on Ratchet & Clank and bad Nic Cage movies, the standalone version will still be available, priced at $169.99. Who's outraged?! Like, outraged enough to comment?

<![CDATA[Let's Compare PSP 3000 (Again!)]]> Back in August, comparison pics emerged showing that the new PSP 3000 appears brighter than the previous model. And now that the PSP 3000 has gone on sale, more comparison pics have emerged again showing that, you guessed it, the new PSP 3000 appears brighter than the previous model. There's a gallery below. But be warned, the PSP 3000 is so bright you might wanna wear shades.

<![CDATA[Gundam PSP-3000 Looks Like You Dropped It On The Bus]]> When Sony announced the PSP-3000 in Japan, they also announced three bundle deals. One of those was for a Gundam bundle, which would cost ¥24,840 ($230), and feature Gundam vs Gundam and a limited edition Gundam PSP. Anyway, here's the PSP! Hardcore fans and those standing right next to the unit will see that those darker bits are a bunch of giant robots. Everyone else, though? They'll think you're a clutz, can't stop dropping the thing, have scratched the crap out of the paintjob.

<![CDATA[PSP 3000 Battery Myths Shattered!]]> The video gaming industry was devastated to learn recently that the recently announced PSP 3000, with its new, brighter screen, built-in microphone and fancy new PS button, may lead to shorter battery life. GameSpot reported recently, based on a conversation with SCEA's John Koller, that higher consumption may reduce battery life by "about 20 minutes." Just soul crushing...

Fortunately, the director of hardware marketing now says that's not actually true, that the PSP 3000 will have an equivalent battery life of four to six hours when gaming, less when watching UMDs. Koller writes on the official PlayStation.blog that "our engineers in Japan worked to reduce the power consumption of the overall system including its components" ending our long national nightmare of slightly reduced up-time due to battery charge. Thank you, God!

<![CDATA[Can You Pick Out The New PSP-3000? Can You?]]> Well, we've seen how the new PSP (PSP-3000) stacks up against the old PSP-2000 — we've even gotten to read about it in English. Right up there, is the PSP-2000 and the PSP-300. Can you spot which is which? And what are the cosemtic differences?

<![CDATA[PSP-3000 To Support Dualshock 3, 480i Video?]]> Got your internet filing cabinet handy? File this between "dubious" and "unexpected". Maxconsole say that - according to a "Best Buy insider" - the new PSP-3000 model won't just feature a brighter screen and cleaner edges, it'll apparently let you plug in your DualShock 3 pad and use it to play games. It'll also allow the outputting of video to a TV via 480i, instead of the currently-mandated 480p. The DS3 thing, it sounds both sketchy and useless (unless more developers start taking remote play a lot more seriously), but the 480i thing might be good news if you're some kind of...uh...a...travelling salesman (?), dependant on your PSP for entertainment (??), and often find yourself in cheap hotels with old, crummy, composite-only TV sets.

<![CDATA[The PSP 3000 - How Different Is It?]]> James Yu over at GameSpot has just posted an excellent hands-on comparison of the old Sony PSP 2000 model and the shiny new PSP 3000, announced just last week at the Games Convention in Leipzig. While we've already posted the comparison that showed up on Famitsu, the GameSpot article has a few things going for it. More comparison photos of the screen, which looks to be where the biggest noticeable differences lie, and the fact that James writes in easy-to-understand English, always appreciated by us English-exclusive humans like myself. Hit the link below for the full skinny on what has changed in obsessive detail, right down to the surface textures of the plastic.

<![CDATA[PSP-2001 vs PSP-3000]]> Differences between the PSP-2001 (ie the PSP Slim) and the PSP-3000 (ie the new one) may not be as big as those between the Slim and the original, but damnit, there are still differences. Famitsu are the first to compare the new PSP model with its predecessor, and as you can see, the changes are fundamental! Innumerable! Look at those streamlined edges! We'll never be able to play our Slims again, what with the fear being crushed by its blunt, heavy edges. After the jump, a more effective comparison shot, this one showing the difference a new LCD screen can make.

<![CDATA[New Official Details, North American Date For PSP 3000]]> Sony Computer Entertainment America has released further information on the new model of the PSP, officially known as the PSP 3000, including when you'll be able to get it stateside. The PSP 3000 model will be available in North America this October, shipping with the previously announced Ratchet & Clank Size Matters entertainment pack, the same one announced at E3 2008.

SCEA officially describes the PSP 3000's new LCD screen as having "a wider color gamut and higher contrast ratio to deliver deeper, more vibrant colors, as well as anti-reflection technology so you can see the screen more clearly when playing outdoors."

As rumored, the PSP 3000 also ships with a smaller metal ring on the back. Picture proof after the jump.

Even the stroke has been slimmed!

SCEA will ship the standalone "Core Pack" version of the PSP 3000 "later this year" for $169.99.

<![CDATA[More Shots Of The Rumored PSP-3000]]> Additional "spy" photos of the alleged PSP-3000 hardware update that we posted last night have come to our attention, again courtesy of the PSPChina.net message board. These shots show off what appears to be a working prototype of the PlayStation Portable, said to have built-in microphone support, among other alleged new functionality.

Hit the jump for exciting photos of the new thinner PSP ring, another look at the PS button and one more cosmetic change. While you do say, chant "This is a rumor, this is a rumor."

Yes, that's that thinner ring. Again. It's thinner.

This shot of the PS button, the one that supposedly replaces the Home button on the current PSP model, looks noticeably different from what we saw previously. It looks more like the PS button on the SIXAXIS controller and is therefore, more suspect.

That would be some handy iconography stamped on the bottom of the PSP-3000. Answers the question, "What am I sticking these cables in here for?"
