    I can't imagine Sony is very happy about this. They lose money on every PS3 that is sold, and if these PS3's are being devoted solely to password cracking and not making money through game purchases, this can't play out well financially for Sony - although the publicity probably makes up for it. #crime

    @phnord: It's not like they're going to be buying very many of them and the loses per unit are dramatically less than they used to be, so it's really no big deal financially for Sony. #crime

    @denki: Breaking an EULA is not illegal. You can't be arrested for it, or hunted down. But you could be denied surface or further use of the product beyond the specified manner. At least that is how I understand them.

    I could be wrong.

    @Chirotera: Depending on what is written in the EULA you can be prosecuted for a whole slew of things. How much of them would stand up in court is another matter, but I believe the UK's crackdown on console modding has strong legal support provided by the EULA terms.

    But as a few people have nicely and rudely pointed out, installing another OS on the PS3 doesn't violate the EULA, so in this case, it isn't illegal. Couldn't do my own fact checking as I don't own a PS3 and am also incredibly laz #crime

    @denki: Installing Linux on the PS3 is not against the EULA. Sony has constantly encouraged the use of Linux on its products, going as far as releasing PS2 Linux Kits, and the "Other OS" feature on PS3 Phats. #crime

    I presume these passwords are using the ASCII charset. If that's the case, wouldn't it be far less than 282 trillion combinations? Unless the password field can store the first 31 characters on the table, plus DEL... #crime

    @Rakuen42: the calculation is 256^6 = 281,474,976,710,656. They can/do limit this to 70^60, 36^6 or even 26^6 in the first stages. I'd like to see them crack my full-ansi-using 25-character passwords :D, though they'll just find srccode of projects there. Or try someone's 10-symbol Chinese password. #crime

    @ChickenPawks: "x^y" means "x to the power of y". 7^2 = 49 . The "70^60" was a typo, had to be "70^6".
    26 lowcase alphabet chars,
    +10 digits = 36 possibilities
    +uppercase and stuff = ~70 possibilities.

    26^6 = 308,915,776 #crime

    wait wait wait, doesn't sony lose money on every console sold? and I'm pretty sure the Federal agents arn't going to buy games for these consoles.

    Although I doubt the amount they bought would really do much. I thought the government agency like Immigration and Customs Enforcement Cyber Crimes Center, would have equipment that we wont see for the next 30 years....

    Then again, the ICE, like the FTA, are one of those freak government organizations that generally get neglected. Over things like the FBI, the CIA, and the best one of all, the ACTTSCCEMGOOP.

    And now since I said all those, I am probably being monitored now, especially for the last one.

    @Lockgar: Just because a product is losing money doesn't mean it's necessarily a bad thing. Sony has a revenue goal every quarter, and these sales help it get there. Beyond that, someone has responsibility for a unit sales number over there, and would help them, as well.

    With companies the size of Sony, typically revenue, not margin, is king. #crime

    @Lockgar: They probably don't give a shit as this was essentially an endorsement from the United States government. Not only do they sell consoles that go to a good cause, it makes them look good and will most likely push sales up. #crime

    They should talk to the DOD. Certain parts of our military purchase IBM Blade Servers with units powered by the IBM CELL processor for intense number crunching.

    My former employer sold a few of them to the USCG, among with several hundred Xeon processor configs. #crime
