In reply to PS3 3.10 Update Adds Facebook Features, Fixes Up Friends List
It's kind of ironic how that in a way, all the people bitching about this completely optional update (read: Facebook integration) are doing so in a system similar to FB. (Having an account on kotaku and posting on various game related articles is not too different from having a profile and commenting on other peoples' statuses and activities.) #ps3

Facebook features? Why not just a streamlined Facebook application? All this sharing trophies and status and whatnot is more of the clutter of twitter and less of what I'd expecting to be spamming my Facebook's friend feed. #ps3

@starscar.exe: Because, the people who need and use Facebook most likely have a computer and don't need to use it when playing games.

Where is all this "one system to rule them all" mentality coming from?

you can make the argument that it reduces the redundancy in life, but it really doesn't. It's obviously not going to offer you the complete facebook experience that you get on your computer so why add it to the PS3?

I think Sony is just trying to one-up Microsoft which also keeps adding useless shit. I mean I use my console to play games or play online. That's the only thing they do best. I have other "specific" devices for everything else that do what I want much better.

If you keep it up, in the end you're going to have a device that does a bit of everything but is good at nothing. #ps3

@Curse lily: Seriously, how often will anyone plan on using voice chat once they actually get it? Half of the people complaining about voice chat probably don't even have mics to begin with. I'm not in any rush to use voice chat. Hell, I rarely use voice chat on my 360 let alone anything else.

As for MKV support, I'm sure there's a legitimate reason why that hasn't been implemented yet. But, I'm sure they're considering it.

This update was probably just a quick fix/add-on and not really a huge update if you ask me. #ps3

@Madness87: But it's not like the app is forced down your throat. I'm in the Xbox Update Preview and I actually have to LOOK for the Facebook function. It's not in your face on Dashboard, so there's no point in anyone complaining about its integration.

Once you do get Facebook on 360, then you actually put in your account info and it's synced or you can just leave it alone and don't bother. That simple.

Also, Facebook on PS3 is under Account Management, and not on the main XMB menu. If it's not there in plain sight, then you're not going to use it. It's not affecting your games (unless you want it to), so what's wrong? #ps3

Screw privacy! I want everyone to know what I do in my spare time! I threw my privacy out the window back in 2007! When will we be able to link our facebook/twitter accounts to our game console/TV/webcam/phone (at the same time) to stream video feeds to each other and comment instantly about everything we do?
    /sarcasm

Seriously though, I don't think I'm going to get into this (social networking) integration crap. I already put my PSN ID on Kotaku, but now with this, I don't want any of you freaks being able to track me down and kill me, my family, and my friends. (Also sarcasm)

I think that they were trying to give people a heads-up that cross game chat would not be coming any time this year.

I'm not really too bothered with the profile colours thing, I just hope that there is some way to have all the profiles the same colour. i.e. make it irrelivent what colour your friends have set thier profile too. It will be rather distracting looking at the friends list and seeing loads of blue/purple/oranges/reds/greens for every different person on the list. #ps3

ok, sound nice and all but...can we get a better way to browse for music. Really, I have over 25 GBs of music on my PS3 and searching for songs I just ripped or copied over is a total pain in the ass with that much music. How hard can it be to just add an option to "show recently added music" or add a way to search for songs, albums or artists by typing in the first few letters of a name?

I hear cross game chat got delayed until next year. Bummer but I can live with it provided AdHoc party actually does arrive by the end of the month in the US. #ps3

@Striderhayasa - Can we get some damn m/kb support?!: Yeah, music has had surprisingly little improvement from those firmware updates, considering how much work they put into video support and photo viewing.

Any PMP is 100x better than PS3 at managing music. And it's sad considering the 7.1 surround sound, the swappable HDD, the huge format support, etc.

I'm sure once all the other complaints have been resolved (read cross-game voice chat) people will be more vocal about how the music lags behind everything else on the platform. #ps3

Not bad. Though Sony would be starting 2010 very nicely if they could get cross-game voice chat in before the end of the year.

Never used XBL, so communication for any game but strategy titles seems unnecessary, let alone across games. But that's me. I'm sure many current PS3 owners and people on the fence would be very pleased with the addition.

Gaming over a wifi network makes me shudder. I opted for the 50ft Ethernet cable and just ran it along the wall under the carpet from the living room to the bedroom.
