    Wait a minute... doesn't loading Linux onto a PS3 violate the PS3 EULA? So, the cops are doing something illegal to catch people doing illegal things...well, wouldn't be the first time. #crime

    @denki: Breaking an EULA is not illegal. You can't be arrested for it, or hunted down. But you could be denied surface or further use of the product beyond the specified manner. At least that is how I understand them.

    I could be wrong.

    @Chirotera: Depending on what is written in the EULA you can be prosecuted for a whole slew of things. How much of them would stand up in court is another matter, but I believe the UK's crackdown on console modding has strong legal support provided by the EULA terms.

    But as a few people have nicely and rudely pointed out, installing another OS on the PS3 doesn't violate the EULA, so in this case, it isn't illegal. Couldn't do my own fact checking as I don't own a PS3 and am also incredibly laz #crime

    @denki: Installing Linux on the PS3 is not against the EULA. Sony has constantly encouraged the use of Linux on its products, going as far as releasing PS2 Linux Kits, and the "Other OS" feature on PS3 Phats. #crime

    any console with a high-end graphics card is capable of the same power

    By that he means the CPU alongside the high-end graphics card is powerful, right?

    Unless they have some special permission or something, the "Other OS" feature can't access or use the graphics card. #crime

    @Gantz/ Your Trusted Friend in Science.: For the PS3, it's probably just the CPU since the RSX has limited access in LINUX on that console. The PS3 CPU was designed to be inbetween a CPU and a GPU

    I do wonder if they could use OpenCL/DirectX Compute to do the same thing with. #crime

    Which makes us wonder why Sony isn't exploring other avenues for their processor, more than anything else.

    When the first one of these stories came out, it was charming. But at this point, it's kind of sad that they still have to string together gaming machines to do this job. Why isn't there a specialized product? #crime

    @Moonshadow101: Err, Sony put the Cell in the PS3 BECAUSE they were exploring other avenues for their processor. They've been used in very many applications pertaining to parallel computing, even ubiquitous computing found in homes (appliances/home functions controlled/monitored by a central computer). The Cell, much like Blu-ray was included in the PS3 to get their technology "out there" in as many homes as possible to encourage market penetration. #crime
