I find this all kind of strange. Normally Japanese voice acting is so great. And although I only know a bit of Japanese, I can see why they think the performance is a bit flat, lacking their usual panache. Maybe they were misguidedly trying to capture a more "western" style of voice acting to stay truer to the original.

@Thut: Dubbing is almost never ever as good as the original, no matter which direction you go. Many dubs are so bad they turn it into a comedy. Think martial arts flicks.

Isn't Caterina the one he rescues off the island and then gets him passage on the boat to Venice? She does say something about him coming back or something...

Me? I'm going to hand weave some natural hemp fibers into little decorative disc covers...

I saw it in my Assassin's Creed II case. Figured they were trying to save some money. I'm okay with that. It's a recession. Cutting costs is okay. If it just happens make sense ecologically as well as economically, that's fine, too.

Stuff like this makes me wonder... are there jokes and Japanese gaming memes where the whole idea is a bad translation from English to Japanese? I mean, we have Engrish and make fun of bad translations all the time (All your base, anyone?)

Also, how much of the population is this? Is this something the publisher really needs to worry about? I know there are people in Japan who play first person shooters, but I always thought there were a lot less there than in the West.

    Ok.

So can someone tell me if the characters speakJapanese with Scottish/American/Russian accents then?

Or is it just your normal fluent Japanese (which is what it sounds like in the video but just wanted to ask anyways)?

@omgwtflolbbqbye: Japanese has its own dialects but its not like english where you have foreign accents mixed in.

Actually if you want to know what that would sound like just go ask folks who are learning Japanese to speak Japanese and there you go.

Back to the main topic at hand usually the "tone" of the character is just determined by the voice of the VA usually. Unless its a comedy they wont really bother trying to add character to it.

@omgwtflolbbqbye: In Japanese games, there is much less variety as far as accents and dialects are concerned, save for an occasional Okinawan dialect. Studios that localize Japanese games sometimes talk about how much rich variety they have access to with the English language, since, unlike Japanese, it is spoken in many different regions in the world. Only a few languages have as much variety within one language, the greatest example probably being Spanish.

    So short answer: No.

Think about that next time you watch a dub with a British/Scottish/American sounding character. Whatever that may mean to the English audience was invented largely by whoever localized the game (FF 12 comes to mind as a great example, since so much emphasis was placed on localization and a number of English dialects were used).

It's questionable how many people really give a shit about this, though. The hardcore FPS-heads have already purchased the US/Asia versions, and are following along with pretty good user-made translation Wikis. And while subs are great for movies and such, the same can't be said for games where you're getting shot at from all directions. Critical mistranslations can be tragic, but it also does happen more often than not, and yet it'll still be more accessible to a newer audience that's too lazy to read subtitles.

Interesting view of localization elsewhere. Looks like they misinterpreted "Remember, no Russian" from meaning the language, to "No Russians left alive".

I suppose the argument for wanting to have English voices in this game is the same reason that American movies are subtitled (not dubbed) in Japanese theaters. Many Japanese games, released in Japan have English voice overs (often so-so or just... ugh) to replicate that "American movie blockbuster" feel or perhaps it would fit better with the setting, like the clip above for a game that never got to see the light of day in the US...

Why is that screen shot funny at all?

Plus, some games just don't work in other languages.

MGS would be shit in Japanese I think, and this is another one. Sometimes we should just suck it up and read subtitles.

And honestly, if your complaining about reading subtitles, learn to read faster, I can read them and still see pictures just fine.

@(Zombie) D Mitsuki, Gotta have guts kid!: MGS works quite well in Japanese. I personally cant stand David Hayters work in MGS since it always sounds like hes "trying" too hard to be cool. They really should have gotten someone else who can perform a more naturally without the excessive squeezing my throat trying to sound gruff and macho type of speaking that hes doing.

The problem is that you dont understand Japanese enough to realize the quality of the work that went into the product so you just brush it off by calling it shit.

    @Witzbold:

Thank you. The JPN MGS VA has always been superior in my book (despite the fact that my Japanese isn't that strong).

Otsuka is a perfect fit for the character particularly that being a smoker in real life gives his voice the edge.

Let's not even start on Raiden...

@Witzbold: It doesn't have to do with my lack of understanding of Japanese, it has to do with the settings and characters and everything.

English just makes it more immersive to me. It's like if I watch a Sony Chiba movie, and it's a dub, it feels stupid and weird and I prefer it much more in Japanese. And I like David Hayter.

Also, care to explain why the screenshot is funny :D
