Because psx4all, a PlayStation emulator for the iPhone, will be entering beta testing any day now. Promising to play around 75% of PSOne titles, there is definitely some work to be done on the touch controls (as seen in this photo), but from what the developer says, those nasty-looking outlines are quite different than what we'll see in the final product.

Only donors of the developer's last projects will be invited to the early beta, but we'll keep an eye out for the final release so you can spend your time worrying about other things, like "do these shoes look good with this phone, or do I need to burn them immediately?"

<![CDATA[Sony Doubling PlayStation Store Archive Updates]]> It looks like Sony finally stoked the fires hot enough to boil the water to make the steam to run the engine that is PSN. Because starting this October, Sony is doubling their monthly PSOne game updates in Japan. That means users will be getting two updates a month—hopefully not with just half the games each. While the effect has yet to trickle down to the US market, we'll be waiting. Right here.

Hit the jump for the full list of classics coming today to Japan. King's Field III may be a necessary download. I purchased my original Playstation just to play King's Field II, but was lured in by the Twisted Metal series and never got around to it. Yeah...I played a lot of TM2...

<![CDATA[PS One Game(s) Pulled From PSN]]> Last week's release, MediEvil, has been pulled from PSN Europe due to a bug that caused the game to crash during the third level. Sony is working to fix the game and get it back online (for free redownload) as soon as possible. Meanshile, Spyro 2—also released last week—is having audio issues that are currently under Sony's examination (translation: do not buy this game right now). So for PSN Europe, it's pretty much been a week of screw ups. On the flip side...

...couldn't think of anything. Sorry.

<![CDATA[PS to DS]]> Tin-foil beanies ON... and check this spooky little number out. Alex is sat behind me in the front rows of the Phil Harrison keynote (about to start), and he tells me that when he came in, the PlayStation PS logo was on the jumbotron.. upside down.

And upside-down, it spells.. DS. Dudes, the Shigeru keynote is tomorrow.

<![CDATA[EA: PSP Needs to be Cheaper, Smaller]]> In part two of his interview with EA CEO Larry Probst, N'Gai Croal gets the man to dish on the Playstation Portable and what it would take to get Electronic Arts to start developing original titles for it.

The most intriguing comments from Probst on the matter come after the CEO says that the Playstation Portable needs to be cheaper and in a different form factor for EA to change their current, port strategy for the portable.

I think what moves the needle is a new form factor that's smaller than the existing unit, at a lower price, and hopefully that price is $100 lower. This is pure speculation, we don't know what Sony's plans are. But it would not be hugely surprising if they had that lower priced unit at $149 and then a more fully-featured upscale unit that retails at $249 or $299. Again, that's pure speculation. We don't have any inside information on that.

Probst goes on to say that it would help to have more interoperability between the PSP and "other platforms". Amen. Let's get that PS3 PSP hook-up in overdrive already.

In this chunk of the interview Probst also touches on EA's next break-out hit (Spore, of course) and the chances of Warhammer Online posing any sort of threat to the MMO goliath World of Warcraft.

<![CDATA[Rumor: Wii Only Playable at Gamestops at Launch]]>

The Dallas Morning New got into GameStop's annual sales conference in Dallas over the weekend.

The con sounded sort of interesting, with playable games on hand and company reps around making their sales pitches to the retailers, three bits of interesting news came out of the event.

First, GameStop is claiming, and I say that because I don't believe them, that they will be the only retailer in the country to have Wii demonstration units available on launch day.

GameStop said at the show that it will be the only retailer at launch to have playable Wii demonstration units in its stores, so gamers can test the "Wiimote" for themselves.

'll be checking that out with Nintendo, but it makes absolutely no sense. Why would Nintendo decide to go with one chain for their demo units, and why pick GameStop when their audience is supposed to be more of the Target or Wal-Mart variety?

GameStop also said at the conference that they haven't yet decided whether to take pre-orders for the Wii or PS3. This isn't because of supply concerns for the two consoles as it much as it is about being gunshy after the 360 launch blew up in their face.

Finally, GameStop says they will be selling the Zune, a first, at their stores.

The iPod competitor will be sold in GameStop stores and other electronics stores when it comes out later this year.

It's GameStop's first foray into the consumer electronics market.

But Mr. Morgan said the partnership with Microsoft makes sense, since the Zune is targeted at the same people who play video games.

"It should be our customer," he said. "That customer has grown up with us."

Mr. Morgan said GameStop could eventually sell other consumer electronics products if those products are likely to appeal to gamers. But games remain the company's focus.

Interesting.
