@Arthur-Otaku: I thought that too - until I played MM9 on a 40" 1080p. I actually think the high-def display does more justice to the crisp 8-bit sprites than it does to regular TV - the sharp lines and contrasts are really brought out. It's one of the reasons I've been droooooling over every little bit of 3D Dot Game Heroes news - the art is simplistic but you KNOW it will be gorgeous on a hi-def set.
@bakana: Yes and Yes. I mean I guess the Wii can output 480p, but that hardly counts. Megaman 9, however, can be played in hi-def on a PS3 or Xbox 360. It looks exactly like how sex feels.
Megaman games was always numbered with regular numbers in Japan (2, 3, 4, etc) instead of roman numerals like in the west (II, III, IV, V, VI, VII) and didnt started to use numbers until MM8 came out.... years after Megaman X came out so thats why so many people confused MMX with MM10, myself included.
This is why you shouldnt temp too much with the localization of the game's title name!
@Alex_Mexico: Just a clarification - all NES Mega Man games have been numbered with traditional numerals. Only the Game Boy spinoff titles used Roman numerals.
@ryoshi: Oh, also MM7's title screen on the SNES had a roman numeral "VII" as well!
It ties because if Capcom had left the normal numbers everywhere like they did in Japan people wouldn't have been confused that when they released Megaman X in 1993 and think MMX was Megaman 10. You see?
@Recoil: Dude, they did a giant robotic onion boss once. They also did an entire game where the bosses were just puns based around Guns and Roses band members.
A sheep is actually downright menacing compared to some of their other bosses.
@rorkimaru: No. It's Proto Man.The article explicitly states so and the artwork supports it. Zero doesn't have a cape. He has long, blonde hair, which wouldn't go around his neck...unlike, say, Proto Man's scarf would. There's also a weird, energy shield thing going on. Proto Man has a shield. The design of the helmet even matches that of Proto Man, albeit with a facemask as well. It's also less likely to be an energy blade and more likely to just be a poorly drawn plasma aura coming from his arm cannon (Zero has no cannon, and thus the energy blade would need to be coming from some kind of sword hilt, not an arm cannon).
So no, it's Proto Man, and any discrepancies are due to the intentionally bad, throwback artwork.
After seeing that picture I couldn't stop laughing for a good 5 minutes, that sheep man is so blatantly out place that nothing but awesome can come of it. Also, ARE THOSE STAR DESTROYERS?!!!!?!
@Lockgar: Sheep Man is out of place because he was added into the image for this article. If you actually click through to the NP article, the actual image has no Sheep Man. He's on the opposite page in a box all to himself.
@BtownDesignGuy: I've...seen things you reploids wouldn't believe..hrngh. Proto Man on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I've watched Gemini Man(s) glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All of those...moments...will be lost in time like..lives on...spikes. Time to die.
Holy hell!! I just had a revelation looking at that artwork. I was thinking about the fact that this is Mega Man 10, and 10=X and whatnot.
Then I realized, that the Mega Man in that picture doesn't have Mega Man's helmet......he has X's helmet. The red jewel/light, the extra bars on the side....
Looking further, I realized that the Protoman pictured isn't the normal one, beyond simply the helmet style. He has a short laser-blade on his right arm, as well as a tattered cape instead of a scarf. As if he was no longer a prototype of Mega Man, but more of a prototype of Zero.
So I hope....nay, am CONVINCED, that this entry will be the last of the classic Mega Man games, leading into the X series story-wise. It's to perfect of an opportunity to the developers to close the story of Mega Man, and leave the classic series finished.
@natedogXVI: So I hope....nay, am CONVINCED, that this entry will be the last of the classic Mega Man games, leading into the X series story-wise.
Only one problem with that theory: why put a permanent end to such a popular series? Sure, there could still be 2D Mega Man games, but capping the original incarnation with an actual end would put huge limits on what they could do in the future.
@natedogXVI: I hate that Capcom kinda gave up on Megaman X... I mean, they created X6, the last good X game and didn't tell anybody about it, (nor did they even dub it!!!!) and then the PS2 games (shoot me now). If you're theories are right about the pic above, I'm already super super excited.
Speaking of which, off topic but Megaman Legends 3... anybody got 10 million dollars lying around?
@natedogXVI: I think your overlooking the fact that this poster, much like MM9s (think it might be the same artist) is exaggerating and purposely making MegaMan's model incorrect and hyped up, like the original MegaMan 1 and 2 boxes for the NES. Its a homage to old school awkward box art. You might be reading into this too much. And lets face it, MegaMan has never made much sense on a story level.
@spiderweb1986: You're right, it would be a little questionable to end the series. Also kind of sad. But up until Capcom made MM9, was anyone REALLY sure the series wasn't finished? I think it could be rather nice of them to retire Mega Man, giving his story an end cap to avoid cycling into making more and more and more sequels. Also, it's not like they have to kill him off or anything. They could literally just retire him, and have a new peace-time until the X-series events.
@gundaman: Reading through what's available of the article, it mentions and unnamed 3rd playable character in MM10. Could be cool if this was someone directly/indirectly related to the X-series. I'm not sure who else it could be.
EDIT: After perusing some more comments/info, etc. there's actually the possibility of the third character being Bass. I'm not sure he would work in an 8-bit style and function, but he could fit story-wise.
Also, the article says the revealed story is about a virus, making robots overheat and malfunction...which seems reminiscent of the X-series. Oh, and the Sheep Man blurb does mention the "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" connection, and as everyone knows, AI has a lot to do with the X series.
Pretty much everything is pointing towards a game that will better bridge the gap.
@davemasterx001: You are correct. Certain elements, like the gun in Mega Man's hand, are clear indicators of this classic style. Also, I wouldn't look into the robots surrounding the two for any clues.
But the helmet on Mega Man, specifically, is designed like X's. More than in some coincidental way. There is pretty much NO chance that this was random, the design is too similar.
I've seen the old box arts, including last year's for MM9. I took those artworks similarities (the gun being used, the human proportions, the general action-oriented depiction. Taking none of those types of things into consideration, this work still has more too it.
@gundaman: amazing, you're the very first person I've found that thinks X6 is the last GOOD X game.
If you're not an amateur Zero user, wich is denoted by saying "the last good X was x4" , or a very puritane and canonic person "the series ended in x5, period", then I can only asume you don't have a PS2. X7 was better than X6, and x8 is even better than both..
@DLNO-001: Wait, I'm confused... are you saying you like the PS2 X7 and X8? Also, as far as I am concerned, the best X game was X4 so you just used thundershock and I am a water pokemon. Ouch = (
Call me a wet blanket, but part of made Mega Man 9 so exciting was how unique it was when taken into the context of what exactly was happening in 2008. It was an exhilarating, brilliantly made lo-res breath of fresh air. The sheer thrill of having a brand spankin' new Mega Man made me a kid again. It almost felt like a gift from Capcom to my generation- an acknowledgement of "us." It felt like a very special thing.
If MM9 was a one-off release that left all us of salivating for another decade plus (again), it wouldn't have been the most instantly gratifying choice for us, but it would've been a brilliant display of restraint and respect for the franchise.
I can't say I'm displeased that a sequel has been announced, but it won't be the same "event" that 9 was. I just hope they don't run the franchise into the ground again, and cheapen what they've managed to accomplish here.

It's exactly the same as the intentionally bad, inaccurate, throwback Mega Man 9 box art helmet. All of you saying that this looks like it might have something to do with X are forgetting that this art isn't supposed to be representative of the actual game. It's intentionally horrible, as a throwback to the Mega Man 1 art that looked nothing like what it should have. I mean, look at Wily in that MM9 image. Fucker's got a ninja mask and cybernetic eye.
The purpose of these box arts for 9 and 10 is to vaguely resemble the characters, but in no way actually be accurate, to create more nostalgia from all the people that remember how bad 1's box art was.
