In reply to Ubisoft Plans 10 Games For Natal Next Year, 4-5 For PS3 Motion Controller
I think this can turn out to be highly successful if they manage to pull out some decent games they give you the *option* to use the motion controller or the *option* to use a regular controller. I forsee a few problems with Natal though, since there is virtually no way you can avoid having to get up off the couch to play a game using the motion control capabilities. At least with the PS3, you're holding something that you could use from the couch, if you really wanted to. I guess you can also play Natal while sitting on the couch, but it would probably think you're a very short person. I remain skeptical about the idea of just using a camera, and a camera alone for tracking. There should always be some sort of peripheral for a game of which you are holding. Natal would be great without holding anything as a wireless means of navigating a menu system, but that's all I see going for it without a lot of high risk endeavors.

Of course they're going to try this route. When you release on a Nintendo console you're fighting an uphill battle against arguably the biggest casual game company out there with the biggest name recognition; with the Xbox Camera or PS3 Vibrator your family-friendly competition are a bunch of pinatas and sack dolls, neither of which have nearly as much fame as a bunch of bearded plumbers. The sales potential of both peripherals are still an unknown, but there's really nothing to lose here by being first out the gate.

I always knew that Microsoft was treating Natal as a product introduction. It is far bigger than any of us know; in fact what we will be paying for is a beta version that they are hoping to apply to the bigger computing world once we have helped to usher in this new technology as "early adopters".

@Spoony Bard: I doubt MS would charge much for this new trinket. In order to make it accessible to the target demographic (casual gamers) they will need to make it affordable, at least the hardware part of it. They'll likely make up for losses on the hardware by selling churned-out casual games at $60 a pop...

If you think about it. Motion control hasn't really been perfected yet. Only a few Wii games really work that accurately and even they can have problems.

Tony Hawk Ride is a good example of how the industry is jumping the gun, with this whole Motion control thing. I actually think Motion control is a step backwards. We're taking something that's easy and relaxing and turning into physical work.

Is he kidding? I'm not going to put a live mic and camera always-on in my home! We have already heard admissions that in the UK and the US, basically any electronic communication is intercepted and archived. To assume they'd spy on us through ubiquitous cameras on every PC would be... crazy... as crazy as the current state of things is now.

Even assuming no government or corporate spies cared to watch you, there have been over a decade of trojans that will let the controller watch you through a webcam or listen through a mic if they are attached. That is probably why we eventually started seeing more webcams with activity lights on the front of them - to tell when the device is active.

To use a system like this for control, it would have to be a standalone unit without storage media, or network connectivity beyond sending command signals to the computer.

@jwells001: What? You think Gates just fell upon his millions? That his success is the result of luck or happenstance? No, the fact of the matter is that he made his money and he is using that money to help people, which is more than could be said for the people here who bemoan his efforts as not being entirely altruistic.

You don't need $100 million to do something great for the world. In fact, all you have to do is get off Kotaku and go out and volunteer. If not that, then don't complain and don't tell someone who is doing more for the world than you to "stuff it." If you're complaining that it's easy for him to be a philanthropist because he has that money, you may be right, but that doesn't mean you can't start now.

To be downplaying the work he has done is not only hypocritical but idiotic.

Honestly I think we're going in the opposite direction of Natal and Minority Report and more to a Ghost in the Shell world. Instead of everything out, everything will go in.

After all, if you want an accurate time line and life of the net, Ghost in the Shell from the manga to now has been pretty scarily accurate from events outside of the net and computing to events related to the net and computing.

As prosthetic and prominence of the internet advances the Ghost in the Shell style world becomes far more likely than just about any other.
