I sort of hope motion control and touchscreens never fully replace traditional controllers. Gaming won't be the same if they remove precision tactile input. Not to say that they're all bad but I wouldn't like to see a future where they're all there is.
@Odin: That's the reason I can't see Natal taking off or working for anything past simply a collection of minigames. No buttons means no precise controls.
I dislike the iPhone for the same reason (Well, there are a lot. No standard button layout, no response from input, and not to mention the fact that the touch screen is incredibly inaccurate, compared to a conventional one, since you have to use your skin, and can't use fingernail et cetera).
The Wii with MotionPlus works out well for motion controls*, I think, and it looks like the PS3's -could- work, so long as there's a control stick portion to it. And the DS works well for touch screen for accuracy, and the fact that it has real buttons.
*When implemented properly, and not just as a replacement for button presses. I added in the with motion plus qualifier, because it adds sensitivity to really enable more of this type of control. Alternately, as a pointing device the Wiimote works well, and I would rank up there with Keyboard/Mouse as best input for a FPS. (Not clumsy like twin analog sticks... A more elegant control scheme for a more civilized age).
@ngamesnick:
The iPhone is okay when it's not trying to emulate buttons (trying to play Sonic the Hedgehog is just painful) but actually using its touchscreen as a touchscreen with games like flight control. I agree with you on the impreciseness of it though, a fingers got a lot more surface area to account for than a stylus. I don't mind the Wiimote too much as it's aim is to augment existing controls rather than replace them. Though I have to say I like it more as a pointer than an actual motion controller. Resident Evil 4 was thoroughly enjoyable on Wii.
Well, if Gem was going to be the final name then I'm thankful it got leaked and consequently denied.
Not that I think I can do better but if I was naming it I'd go for "PSFocus".
I think that's it. It shall be henceforth known as the MOCO.
"Hey, toss me the moco!" I think that works. Descriptive, (MOtion COntroler) and easy to say. Also has that odd made-up word sound that seems to identify modern tech products.
@Mega-Driven: Negatory, it appears Samsung has a smart phone using this word.
How about something like Rodule? Hmm. That sounds like rodger, as in "You could use a good rodgering", so no go.
Scepter? A little too D&D, maybe spelled differently. SCEPTRE. No. Hmm. "Play-ton"? Like "baton"? Jesus, this is hard. Baton reminds me of bacon. Oooh bacon. I think I have some bacon in the fridge.
@mr_godot: What, just because they can't come up with a name they can't develop the thing? It's not like the guys in charge of naming it are the same guys building it.
It'd probably be a lot like pregnancy. Parents can squabble all they want about the kid's name but that doesn't mean the thing isn't being developed.
ok so the bulb looks weird, prehaps if they made it rectangular bulb it may fit in more with the design.
if this controller really does kick off and they make great games, im sure no one will bother to carry on the phallic symbol jokes i've been seeing on the net.
@zåɳzißarleɠёпȡ: If you review any of the previous articles about how the controller works, you would know that the circular shape of the "bulb" is kinda necessary. That said, I agree it is slightly silly looking.
I think this can turn out to be highly successful if they manage to pull out some decent games they give you the *option* to use the motion controller or the *option* to use a regular controller. I forsee a few problems with Natal though, since there is virtually no way you can avoid having to get up off the couch to play a game using the motion control capabilities. At least with the PS3, you're holding something that you could use from the couch, if you really wanted to. I guess you can also play Natal while sitting on the couch, but it would probably think you're a very short person. I remain skeptical about the idea of just using a camera, and a camera alone for tracking. There should always be some sort of peripheral for a game of which you are holding. Natal would be great without holding anything as a wireless means of navigating a menu system, but that's all I see going for it without a lot of high risk endeavors.
Of course they're going to try this route. When you release on a Nintendo console you're fighting an uphill battle against arguably the biggest casual game company out there with the biggest name recognition; with the Xbox Camera or PS3 Vibrator your family-friendly competition are a bunch of pinatas and sack dolls, neither of which have nearly as much fame as a bunch of bearded plumbers. The sales potential of both peripherals are still an unknown, but there's really nothing to lose here by being first out the gate.

A blackjack is another word for a sort of small club, btw.

One wonders how the development of it is going when they can't even piece together what to call the thing.

they should call it the "veen". as in, the sound effect of high-speed automatic doors opening in the 23rd century.
