I had a 60gig, but sold it when I was still at uni for smokes/grocerys.
Recently bought the 80gig XBOX HUEG ps3, then they announced this...
...this sexy little machine.
I do want one...
Alas i'll stick with my ps3phat, it has a 500gig hard drive in it now and i dont want to redownload everything and have some saves not copy over all over again.
plus, the pspslim is not glossy no? it will not match my pspgo or my tv! #playstation3
All these bundles are cool n all but I think Sony should start including their official headset with them all.
I am glad you can choose any headset but quite a few of my mates don't understand the need for a headset simply because they have never gamed with one for long.
If cross chat gaming really is 'coming soon', it would help make that seem more relevant. #playstation3
Disregard. Double Post. Sorry, I'm still getting use to the new system (one, which I might add, locked me out for the last week or so). Welcome back me!
I've double-posted at least three times since the switch. I love being able to see replies, but it seems there is a little ironing-out needed. #playstation3
@Strangelove: I'm replying to you just because you love seeing replies....um..Hi!
In all seriousness, yeah, this was like my second double post. And pictures don't load properly either. But I guess that's to be expected- it must have took a lot of work to get this up and running. I'm sure they'll get it ironed out in time to have the next new update begin the cycle anew. #playstation3
Hmm....I'm seriously considering picking up the PS3. I have one right now but it's not technically mine, through it is here in the apartment with us. Anyway, my question is, should I get this or the 120. 120 already seems like an awful lot to me and it doesn't seem like I would ever use more than that, but then again, what with the manual installs, demos and psn games I would be likely to purchase, the 250 might seem to be the safer option. I guess I'll wait to see how much it's going to cost us Canucks. $350 seems like a fair price, but anymore than that, maybe I'll just stick with the 120.... #playstation3
@NeVeRMoRe666: Considering the PS3 HDD is extremely easy to swap out, I'd say go for the 120. It doesn't look like the 250 has any more added functionality as a system, so you're not missing anything.
@Nowell: Hmm..yeah I guess that's true. 120 it is and I don't have to wait. Is it like, inbred easy to swap out the hard-drive? I'm not inbred but I'm not great with these kinda things. I'm thinking 120 is probably enough anyway. I've been hanging on to my 20gb HDD on my xbox since the beginning.
As for your star, I wouldn't worry. Last time they updated Kotaku with a new format, I lost mine for a while but it came back. It might have more to do with the system undergoing new changes then you having your star purpously taken away- so hang tight! You aren't the first one I've seen that lost their star today (a very uncommon event).
As an aside, I was also locked out of Kotaku for the last week or so, I couldn't connect to my profile- I'm guessing because of the new changes taking place behind the scenes. #playstation3
@NeVeRMoRe666: It's pretty darned easy to swap out drives. It will take most 2.5 inch drives, and there are plenty of tutorials online. It's as easy as prying open a faceplate, popping the old hard drive out, and putting the new one in. Then you just have to let the system reformat the drive, and you should be good. 320 GB drives are only about $50. Unless you are a downloading fiend, 320 GB should be more than enough for your purposes. #playstation3
@NeVeRMoRe666: It's as easy as taking off a cover, unplugging the old and plugging in the new.
As for the upgrade, I'm not a fan so far. Can't find the buttons for my profile, and can't figure out how to change out of condensed mode. Though I do like the reply notification system. #playstation3
I don't mind the bigger hdd for only a little more money. Just because I can upgrade the hdd myself doesn't mean I really want to do it. I know its easy, but I would rather just have it ready out of the box. Meh, call me lazy... (please don't! ; ;) #sony
Damn Sony really did their homework. Buying a 120GB slim and getting an aftermarket 250GB drive ends up costing $355. Here's the cheapest harddrive on newegg at 250GB or larger: [www.newegg.com]
@FP_slomo788: but what are you gonna do with a PS3 and TWO hard drives? you effectively have one 250GB drive, unless you have a laptop that needs upgrading. You could sell it, but that takes time and can be a hassle for some people. Hence the tipping of my hat. :P #sony
@mangs: Shove the extra drive into an enclosure, and VOILA! Instant external USB hard drive for backing up your PS3's new hard drive. Or storing your videos/pictures on. Or simply doing whatever the hell you want with it. #sony
@mangs: put it in an enclosure and just make it an external. That's what I would do. You can never have too much space for por-...blu ray movies... #playstation3
Considering sony themselves said there was a 70% drop in the price of making a PS3...
Well, my math found that EVEN IF THE PS3 was selling at a LOSS of 150 dollars before, it would NOW be making a profit of, I believe, 75 dollars. I don't remembher the numebrs, but I know the math showed that whether they were losing 150 dollars or less on the old PS3s, they were making a big profit on each one now.
And yet they still can't afford a chip for BC? :\
FOr anyone wondering, the math was
Sale price - Hypothetical OLD production price(.30) = Profit
I did a few of those for various hypothetical losses. For example, if before they were LOSING 150 DOLLARS on each console, the hypothetical production price was 750 dollars.
300 dollars now minus 750 dollars price dropped by 70 percent = 225 dollars, meaning they would be profiting 75 dollars on each console NOW, even if they had a 150 loss BEFORE.

@WhiteMage: 1) The initial loss was over $200, more like $240.
2) Even if they make a certain profit now on the PS3, overall the endeavor has cost them money. If you take the average losses (then) and the average profit (now), the former is still much greater than the latter. Even if their objective was to break even, they are still far from the goal.
3) Adding BC could undermine Sony's efforts on the PS3 software-side, with people buying PS2 games to play on the PS3 or using their old PS2 games. It's unnecessary competition. PS3 games cost more to make, PS3 IPs are still largely new.
4) I really hope you aren't trying to make it seem like Sony is ripping consumers off or something because they removed BC. As far as feature set goes PS3 is far from the worst device one could buy right now. If you're willing to pay an extra fee for BC, buy a PS2. In the end it would probably be cheaper to you than what a BC PS3 would cost right now. #sony
@FP_slomo788: Theres no reason they couldn't provide a premium PS3 that is BC. And saying its unnessecary competition doesn't make sense. Just because PS2 titles still sell is sell doesn't mean there competition for PS3 games because theres basically no PS3 games that are the exact same as on PS2 #sony
@excel_excel: The competition isn't in the content of the games themselves, per se. Think of your average casual gamer. If he grabs a PS3 and it can play PS2 games, when he's at the store and a little short on cash, can't really find anything for PS3, he might go for a PS2 game. Or he might like to try a PS2 game and figures he might as well play it on his PS3.
However, take that functionality out of the PS3. Now, average joe has a PS3 and wants to game, and he's got one choice: PS3 games. He won't even consider PS2 games, and if he can't afford a PS3 game, he'll save until he can.
Also, even if he still has his PS2, he's probably put himself in the mindset that it's "old and lame" and will want to get games he can play on his shiny new PS3 (especially to justify how much he just paid for the system).
It's more of a mental thing, but overall, I think it's pretty obvious that PS3 software sales benefit from the lack of PS2 BC. And I'm sure that benefit is greater than whatever loss they might be experiencing due to people not purchasing a PS3 because it doesn't have BC. #sony
I'm a soon-to-be PS3 owner. Obviously my choices are limited regarding space. Right now it's the 120GB only, but that will change in a few weeks.
In all seriousness, what is the benefit of having lots of HDD space? Is it just installing games and buying stuff from the PSN? Or can you upload movies from your computer and watch them directly instead of streaming?
I won't be doing anything crazy with mine other than playing games and, depending on how the interface works, it may replace my 360 for streaming video from my computer/external HDD.
Thanks for the answers, it will help my purchase. #sony
@Dr Durdon: i have quite a few PSN games, + a few installed games, with only those, a 80gb will be enough, but with movies and music on as well? i think not. #sony
@Dr Durdon: I have a 320 gb hard drive in my ps3 at the moment and it has about 120 gb free space. I have all 50 episodes of Eureka 7, every Venture Brother episode and various other videos. Plus with the video store that Play Station Network supports I have lots of movies and various impulse buys saved.
You can also stream media from any pc straight to the ps3 without re-saving it.
I also have linux installed taking up some space. On the linux system I have almost all NES and SNES games saved as emulators. Sort of difficult to get working but super nice to have. #sony
@Dr Durdon: Between demos, downloadable games, DLC, media (music, video, photos), MGS4 and Capcom games in general your HDD will fill up pretty quickly. #sony
@Bubbleman!: You should know by now that the PS3 and the XBox 360 are more than just video game consoles. And game installs, demos and DLC do take room. #sony
@FP_slomo788: i understand that (that's why i say the dreamcast was the last great "pure" gaming console) but, who has enough free time/money to need all of that space anyways?
maybe i just don't get it. im unemployed right now and i certainly don't have time to fill that kind of hdd space up. also, the fact that you can stream all of your media from pcconsole kind of negates the need for all that space. hell, i never even filled the 20gb on the original 360. the only thing that really takes up space is demos and mandatory installs, and even then, they still don't require that kind of space. #sony
@Bubbleman!: Well its mainly because on PS3, mandatory installs and updates take up loads. GT5 prologue took up nearly 6GB, Fallout 3 without any DLC takes up 4GB, any capcom title takes up 4GB or more, in Resi 5's case taking up more than 5GB, Arkham Asylum takes up around 4GB once you've got through the game. It all adds up and a 6oGB PS3 can quickly fill up. #sony
I'm going to be getting a Slim soon to replace my 40GB model. I'd jump on this, if I didn't already have a 320GB hard-drive.
By the way, anybody know if the Slim is a lot more reliable than the old PS3? The fan in my current PS3 is not acting right, probably due to cat hair. (My cat likes to sleep on electronic equipment.) Is a Slim going to have a better shot than my old PS3? #sony
@the7k:
The slim is a good system, I replaced my older one as well which was louder and used more power with one. I just wished Sony would sell just one unit and explain to customers that they can upgrade the HDD themselves. #sony
