is it just me? or does obama carry some kind of god complex that whatever the guy says, it's golden and true and not matter how little he mentions of it, it has to be national news. just like making an article saying that obama said "video games" even though he advised we put them down as though they're an inconvienence.
i'm probably then one of the few that say games can be an art as well that rivals that of books. games like bioshock and gta4+TLAD can show this if you know what to look for. that's not to say you can substitute literature with games, but they can go hand in hand with games as interactive storytelling where you, the audience, can experience first hand the themes. much more so than 99% of movies which some may say, and i strongly dissagree, that offer that of good literature as well.
this speech no doubt convinces me that obama is part of the aged, dead horse beating crowd that is cemented in "games are just a waste of time" thought which is very contradictory to the "progressive" image that obama touts.
most likely this will be read with blind eyes since i haven't made it in time to post on the first page -.-
I don't know who wants to suck obama's dick more, the media or the Kotaku writers. This guy is devaluing the US dollar with all these bailouts. Austrian economics has shown that you can't force a market to improve like this. But Bareback Osama is so stupid that he doesn't even realize that he's flushing America down the toilet.
He couldn't even get his facts straight about what country invented the car. He claims the US did but the U.S. Library of Congress credits German inventor Karl Benz with creating the first true automobile that ran on an internal combustion engine. Benz came out with his patented car around 1885, or about the same time when fellow Germans Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach produced a four-wheeled automobile with a four-stroke engine.
By contrast, U.S. automotive pioneer Henry Ford did not start rolling out his mass-produced Model T cars until 1908.
@Sam_Lowry: How could anyone take anything you say seriously when there's something as juvenile as "Bareback Osama" nestled in the middle of your post?
It's scary how right Obama is on that tip and how little the media promotes that type of mindset. Instead, the media just points their finger at anything other than poor parenting. The media particularly loves to blame video games and TV.
HA! TV!
The very media that is corrupting our children blames itself and parents still plop the little tikes down right in front of it every day. So sad how little owness there is from our "adults" in this country.
@ssoltero: Media is all about ratings. If they don't dig up a scandal or a scapegoat, they don't have ratings, their viewership readership goes down, and their business fails.
People, on the other hand, don't necessarily have the same agenda. A person who genuinely cares about things has the ability to make these statements. I'm not going to say that I know for a fact that Obama is this kind of person (worried more about that nation than his second term), but I'm hoping he is and these kinds of statements support that idea.
It's too bad actual important items don't closely echo what he stated in his presidential campaign, such as the American people being able to view policies and have a say in what should or shouldn't be passed. Full transparency my butt. I wanted a say in the stimulus.
He said he'd wait five days between a bills passage and signing it, and he did. It was online during those five days.
Overwhelmingly, US citizens support the stimulus, so they did sort of have their say. And you can always contact your district's representative or your state's senator to have even more of a direct impact.
I'm not sure what you want and or expect. He did exactly what he said he'd do.
@doubtful: So in five days the average working citizen is supposed to read the 1100 some odd pages and decide what they would like to see changed? He did not do what he said he would, he rushed this bill. No one had enough time to really discuss it. Heck almost all democrats that voted in favor voted before reading. I understand that some action needs to be taken, but it is evident that this was just politics as usual. Obama is no different than any other politician. I don't know what news you've been reading or watching but to say that this bill is overwhelmingly supported is a huge overstatement. I've been following local news, and just about every major television news stations and I seriously have only seen maybe 3 stories about people happy about what the stimulus will do to them.
So in five days the average working citizen is supposed to read the 1100 some odd pages and decide what they would like to see changed?
I'm not sure if you're familiar with how our representative democracy works, but that's not it, and that's not what Obama ever told anyone. He said he'd leave it up for five days before signing any bill, and that's what he did. Admittedly, it's not enough time for everyone to read and analyze the bill, but advocacy and watchdog groups have a chance to check it out and comment; far more than any time in recent history.
I don't know what news you've been reading or watching...
I don't think a single commonly repeated line from his speech about parental responsibility is distracting him or congress from the important work they're doing.
Whether you agree with their policies or not, it's fairly clear they have been working on it.
@HyeVoltage: No, it is just to score points with the soccer moms and to make Obama out like he is a average joe.
I wish he would stop bringing it up too because it is like he thinks the only problem with the education system is just bad time management by the students.
@HyeVoltage: I think we're all just counting down to the days it takes for him to lose his idealism and start condemning video games just to get people what they want to hear, just to earn some empty support.
It happens to everyone who joins the political game. We're just counting down the days.
@panfriedcharlie: I would think that obama is the only president in the time span in which gaming is so popular that people start holy wars over disagreements. him playing games isnt that strange in relation to the (no offense) 60 year old white guys that have been presidents before. him having a younger outlook on things and pop culture as opposed to doing weed, being a "crook" and being an obvious sex addict (bush, nixon and bill and probably others), i doubt anybody other than JFK wouldve done anything as popular with the people as video gaming, had he had the chance.
yay at least he gets one thing right so far. now if only hed stop ruining all these children's chance at attaining any hope of wealth in their lives by blowing through trillions of dollars that we dont really have *ftw*
@bl0ven: Are you saying he's already blowing through trillions of dollars? Because in the speech he said that his people had already freed up trillions of dollars.
@bl0ven: Yeah, it would be so much better for America to spend trillions of dollars on a bullshit war and tax cuts.
Remember kids! Tax cuts! Tax cuts! Tax cuts! Nothing can ever go wrong with tax cuts!
I love how the republicans are sticking to their guns on this. Nothing says loyal to a cause like opposing the stimulus plan bbut taking the money anyway.
Um. A book? It's an object, usually made of some sort of paper with words on it written/printed in ink? Ring any bells? You hold it in your hand, open it up, and read the words. If you do it with another person (i.e. a child or someone bedridden), you usually read it outloud to them.
Damn.
I'm have a Star Trek: Next Generation moment where it's a time period where the only people that still read actual books, instead of on a vid screen or holodeck, are intellectuals, collectors and hobbyists.
@Gorilla Snow is hot for Snorlax: What do you mean you people! Shame on you for discriminating against the humourly inept! They're people too, ya know!
Too many parents blame video games and TV, but never themselves. I guess that's our American parents for ya.
Same thing goes for that CA abortion Prop in 08. If the kids don't trust the parent enough to tell them they've had an abortion, it's the parents fault. Whatever happened to earning trust and respect?
@Gorilla Snow is hot for Snorlax: It ain't just American parents. Parents everywhere blame anything but themselves. It's a real tragedy that so many get away with it.
@Gorilla Snow is hot for Snorlax: and sometimes it's not even entirely the parent's fault. they are exposed to peer pressure and outside stimulus, the kids themselves could be to blame. as i see all the time on those cases where someone died over losing their xbox or something "what ever happened to crazy?"
I bumbled into a room where this was on, and it was such a good speech I actually stayed until the end. For once in my life, I feel excited about politics. :)
@Dunnell: I was excited till I remembered Obama's FISA vote, and the fact that he keeps violating Pakistan's sovereignty via drone attacks...oh and the fact that he is actually helping to stonewall investigation efforts into the Bush admins abuses of power and...oh wait this is a gaming site.
@jayntampa: Tell that to the families who have lost people in his bullshit war in Iraq...I also invite you to go and tell the Iraqis to move on as well.
Have you paid much attention to the state of our nation?? I can point fingers all across the aisle but take a guess at who bears the bulk of responsibility for the mess we're in.
Anyways, I didn't expect much from him anyways. Democrats and Republicans are one in the same.
@StreamOfConsciousness: I am not familiar with the "stonewalling" you are speaking of, but punishment doesn't do anything to help our nation or those families. Doing constructive things that actually helps move us out of this situation will.
Not saying that justice shouldn't be served, but it takes a backseat to actual progress.

Oh, I don't know...how about this, this, this, or even Fox News.
Just over half of Americans - 51 percent - support the economic stimulus and spending plan passed by Congress last week and 40 percent oppose it.
Where I come from, an 11 point margin is overwhelming support.
Look, I get it. You're biased. That's fine. You're just not entitled to your own facts.
