Age Of Conan Early Start Preorders Sold Out, Dammit

Just two days ago I switched back to DSL after a brief foray into the world of really slow apartment cable internet, which made it nearly impossible to download the 12.59 GB Age of Conan beta installer. I finally got the file downloaded yesterday with speedy DSL goodness, just in time for the whole thing to end. In my desperation, I ran out to GameStop to snag a preorder so I could at least get into the early start of the retail version.

No dice. Sold out. Funcom had to cut things off because of the logistics involved with having too many people trying to download a 12.59 GB file all at once. It might tick some folks off, especially those that preordered the game and didn't get the code, but look at it this way...you saved $5.

Needless to say, if you haven't preordered your copy of Age of Conan yet, you aren't going to be playing until the game launches in the middle of next week, so you can spend your entire weekend wondering how far those damn early birds are getting in the game while you...I dunno, log in to World of Warcraft and halfheartedly stab at murlocs. I'm right there with you.

Bad Company Demo Coming June 5th

Those of you who weren't fortunate enough to get into the closed beta test of EA DICE's slightly controversial Battlefield: Bad Company will get their chance to step into the boots of B Company in early June when a combination single / multiplayer demo is released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The multiplayer will consist of the Gold Rush game mode on the Oasis map, while the single player will get players acquainted with the colorful characters of B Company. The demo will be up on both Xbox Live and the PSN on June 5th, though people who preorder the game with be able to access the game a week earlier on May 29th. Hit the jump for the full press release, or head over to the Battlefield: Bad Company website for more on the preorder incentive. More »

GameStop Announces Spider-Man: Web Of Shadows

It is a sad day when I have to find out about a new Spider-Man game from a blurry photo of a GameStop sales circular. Kotokuite ReidP snapped this shot of the in-store ad for the "just announced" game, complete with Bioshock-ish link to a not-yet-active website where you can vote for which gift you receive for preordering the game. I'd expect official word from Activision any moment now on how they are going to maintain the Spider-Man license's downward spiral. In the meantime, I'd go for t-shirt. Figurines get lost, posters tear, but t-shirts are forever, or at least until the pits rot out.

Guitar Hero Aerosmith Preorder Goodies

Are you as excited about Guitar Hero: Aerosmith as I am? Then you'll probably want to skip this article. Those genuinely excited can stick around and read about the spiffy preorder deal going on at retail outlets around the country. Preordering Guitar Hero: Aerosmith entitles you to a special, limited edition bundle of the game, featuring the game itself, and Aerosmith tour book, the guitar, and an exclusive Aerosmith faceplate for said guitar. Blockbuster Aiming At Game Preorder Exclusives

I got into a long conversation with the manager of a Blockbuster Video store I've frequented since before the DVD era began today, regarding the company's increased focus on gaming. You see, Blockbuster Video isn't doing so well in this age of Netflix and video downloads, so they are trying to modify the business to stay competitive...it's just the competitor's have changed. Said manager claimed that Blockbuster Video would soon begin getting preorder exclusives...games that cannot be preordered anywhere but Blockbuster. You'll still be able to buy them at other stores on release day, mind you...you just won't be able to reserve a copy anywhere but BB. The news was delivered via an alleged ex-GameStop executive at a managers' meeting, where it was explained to them that GS was actually having to cancel some preorders as they could no longer guarantee copies on release. The horror! More »

PotBS Pre-Orders Moved To November 13th

"What happened to the October 23rd Pirates of the Burning Sea preorder start" you ask? Weird, I was just writing up a story about that. Turns out that the death of Gods and Heroes had a profound effect on the distribution of the Pirates preorder boxes, as Sony Online Entertainment dealt with refunding those who had gone ahead and preordered the promising looking mythological MMO. There was a news post over at the official PotBS site which doesn't mention the Gods and Heroes issue, though if you hit the link to the forums below you'll get the full story, as well as several tracks from the game's soundtrack offered as a sorry for the delay from Flying Lab. Pirates of the Burning Sea preorder boxes should be in stores November 13th, containing all of the parroty goodness promised.

GameStop Opens 5,000th Store

The world's largest video game retailer just got bigger by one, and it's a pretty big one. Today sees the opening of GameStop store number 5,000 in Jackson, California. GameStop Vice President of Stores (looking slick on the left there) was on hand for the landmark opening, after which employees immediately started beating customers with issues of Game Informer and discount cards.
"With more customers being attracted to the video game category, they will increasingly find a GameStop convenient to them," said Dan DeMatteo, Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of GameStop. "This landmark store opening underscores the strength of our business model and represents a spectacular effort on behalf of our 44,000 employees worldwide."
To put things in perspective, there are nearly 3 times the number of GameStops as there are Waffle Houses, which can often be found in pairs across the street from one another in my home state of Georgia. More »

Pirates of the Burning Sea Preorder Goodies

What would Talk Like A Pirate Day be without booty? Sony Online Entertainment and Flying Lab have announced that preorders for their salty MMO, Pirates of the Burning Sea will start up on October 23rd, and there be wonderous treasures to behold for those eager enough to drop some dubloons down on the title. Most notable is the chance to get a leg-up on the other pirates with a whopping 15 day "Pre-Boarding Party", which gives players a half a month head start on the competition, with a level 20 cap. That incentive alone almost makes it necessary to preorder the game if you want to be competitive on launch day. Players will also enjoy one of three unique weapons based on the fighting style they choose, as well as the game's soundtrack CD, which will actually be included in the preorder box. As if that weren't enough, captains who sail the Burning Sea early will also get a blue and yellow shoulder parrot, and what is a pirate without a parrot, aside from a pirate without bird droppings on his jacket? Nothing I tell you. Nothing. More »

PSP Slim Available for Amazon Preorder

The PSP Slim, or PSP 2000 if you want to be official and sound like a Terminator movie, is now available for Amazon preorder. It's a weird sensation, probably born from my part-diesel American consumer blood, but I kind of want a new PSP all of the sudden. It's as if this PSP will make me stronger, smarter or better looking—all from the confines of my kitchen's crap drawer—where it will surely end up after two weeks.

There are also two bundles available. Both running $199, you can either get Jack & Dexter (with silver model) or Star Wars Battlefront (with white model).

Granado Espada Retail Purchase Bonus

Last year's Best Game in Korea award winner Sword of the New World: Granado Espada is set to hit next month, and publisher Elephant Entertainment wants you to preorder it via retail instead of going the online route. What do you get in exchange for giving up the convenience and tree-guiltlessness of a digital download? Along with exclusive beta access, players will start off with 10,000 Vis, which is the fake monies in the game, giving them a huge advantage over the other Vis-farmers struggling to get established. Amazon.co.uk PS3 Preorders

Amazon UK PS3 preorders are go! After waiting long past the originally stated 9am launch time, UK customers are finally able to preorder Sony's shiny new console from Amazon, though how long that will last remains to be seen. They started around 9:30am my time, and as of this moment they are still available. More »

Amazon U.K. Offers Duke Nukem Forver Pre-order

Kotakuite Darren was checking out the Amazon Deal Finder that was posted yesterday and ran across an interesting listing on Amazon's UK site. Apparently, the are offering pre-orders of long, long, long awaited Duke Nukem Forever for 24.99. A search of the North American Amazon site turned up no such pre-order which leads me to wonder if perhaps the Brits know something about this title that we don't. One cheeky commenter on the page claims to have done some testing work for Duke Nukem Forever's developer, 3D Realms: More »

HMV Bundles PS3...with PSP?

HMV have quite the interesting PlayStation 3 preorder offer going at their online store. Customers who wish to secure themselves Sony's shiny new console at HMV.com.uk right now can do so, but only if they buy a 4GB PSP along with it. Customers who purchase the bundle, which includes 2 PSP titles, for 675 (roughly $1,300) get their PSP straight away and priority over all other online orders once they have the PS3 on hand. As of right now this is the only way to preorder the PS3 from HMV's online store, as page for the system alone just features a place to put your email and be notified. The PSP preorder offer is good until the 2nd of March, or until 5,000 people have signed up, which hopefully means it'll be on until 3/2.
A Sony spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz, "This is just one of a number of value added incentives that retailers will be offering to mark the launch of PS3.

Yeah...not sure how tacking on extra items that people potentially don't even want qualifies as 'value added', but I guess a Sony Rep calling a major retail partner 'bastards' would be in bad form. More »

Wal-Mart Online Preorder Bundles

Apparently many of you out there have nothing better to do that constantly refresh Wal-Mart pages, as we've received a bunch of emails pointing us to the Wal-Mart preorder pages for the Wii and the PS3. Being the lumbering corporate monstrosity that they are, they've of course gone the bundle route. Right now it looks as if they either aren't working or are completely sold out. If I try to add anything to the cart I get a configuration not available error I'm going to go ahead and post the screens I've taken of the site, in case these go away. More »

Pre-order $700 Worth of Wii

EB has begun sending out email notifications of their Wii online pre-order offer, which mixes the sickeningly cutesy use of 'Wii' instead of 'we' with the decidedly vile practice of mandatory system bundling. Should apply to Gamestop as well, as they are both part of the same lumbering retail beast. More »
