Yeah, Steelers won, but they didn't deserve it. I put my money on Steelers (and happily walked away with cash), but they really didn't deserve it the way they were acting and responding to the Cardinals. C'mon, really. How many "Unsportsmanlike conducts" will your team have in a game? How many damn flags will you get for personal fouls?
Game well played... but not with a trace of humility.
@Mike918: That's the one thing I love about being a Lions fan, we haven't had promise since 1997. Well, there was that '08 season 6-2 start, but even I called that epic collapse.
Yeah, it must have predicted the horrid reffing. this is twice now in 4 years that the Steelers have won a SB and gotten a majority of the close calls.
@I_Like_Rabbits: So you're saying that those penalties against the Cards didn't happen? The ones that we could all see with multiple angles of view? Horrid reffing yes, but don't act like it was biased. The Cardinals shot themselves in the foot throwing that pick at the end of the half and giving up a hundred yards in penalties.
@OUberLord: @Kaltori: You can't really respond to a guy that's arguing a team lost due to officiating by saying 'they gave up too many penalties'. It's like responding to someone that believes in the Yeti with "They Yeti does not exist."
@Omnimon: Looks to me like his argument was that the Steelers "got more calls to go their way" than the Cardinals. The Cardinals were penalized for like 100 yards, cut that in half and you get rid of the blatantly obvious fouls that they were called on.
That still leaves over 50 yards in penalties that you can blame on "close calls that the Cardinals got screwed on", "letting the Steelers win". He was arguing that the Steelers won because "all the close calls went their way", I was merely pointing out that the Cardinals lost because "they had over 100 yards of penalty yards assessed against them" which in my opinion is unacceptable if you want to win the SuperBowl.
You can try to say that this doesn't apply to the argument that "the refs sucked and only called fouls on the Cardinals", but my OPINION is that sure you could blame half of their lost yards on "bad calls (which weren't THAT bad)" but what about the other 50 yards or so from flagrant fouls? I suppose those don't count since they support my side and go against what you said.
@Kaltori: No, those count. I'm saying that half of the penalty yards called against a team in the Super Bowl shouldn't be able to be chalked up to questionable officiating.
By that point, Green Bay wasn't in the playoff race...and their hatred of the Vikings was so strong they'd rather see their team LOSE than see the Vikes make the playoffs.
Agreed. And if I hadn't already stopped watching Heroes, I would after that stupid singing commercial. Chuck...you're on the bubble. Consider this a warning.
Cause crotch pain is still funny? I thought that crotch shots being the sole basis of your humour died back in, like, 1998? What is this, 5th grade? (Even still, the first half of the commerical was only mildly funny.)
And the e-Trade baby was funny the first time, chuckle-worthy the second time... but lame as hell last night. Sheesh.
@Kenny: Did none of you see the Cash 4 Gold commercial starring Ed McMahon and MC Hammer? Omg it was like the best commercial ever, mainly because I watch a lot of Price is Right and Peoples Court (they're on between classes and what the hell else is on at 10 and 11 am during the week?) and the normal Cash 4 Gold commercials are so incredibly lame.
When this commercial came on during the superbowl I first thought "oh wow, Cash 4 Gold paid to put their ad in the superbowl?" but then when I realized I was looking at Ed McMahon and then MC Hammer started talking about "sending in his gold pants" I fell out of my chair.
I actually thought that the superbowl ads this year were really good, better than the last few years imo.
@Kaltori: Cash 4 Gold really caught me by surprise as well and is easily the best commercial of the bunch, even if it's almost sad given who it stars and their recent financial troubles (obviously why they were chosen). The Denny's commercial was nice, but on the whole nothing really amazing. The SoBe commercial is absolutely terrible and the only complete dud in a mediocre crop.
@Kaltori: I found the Cash4Gold commericial rather saddening, as it made me realize that they've made enough money suckering people out of their values to put together a 3 million dollar commericial.
@Mister Adequate: If the refs wanted the Steelers to win, why did they overturn a first quarter touchdown that had a replay that was, at best, fuzzy? If the refs wanted the Steelers to win, why did they call six penalties against the Steelers IN THE FOURTH QUARTER? If the refs wanted the Steelers to win, why did they call holding on the Steelers that resulted in a safety? The game may have been overly officiated, but, with the exception of the roughing the quarterback call against the Cards, it definitely wasn't poorly officiated.
Full disclosure: I live in Indy and am a Colts season ticket holder. I had no dog in the fight.
@Saint Jonah: Why yes, yes I am a Browns fan. I'll never get over it - it's mandatory that we be angry at Steelers, until the end of time. You tell an OSU fan not to hate on Michigan and see where that gets you.
Sure, my team sucks more ass than well, anyone, but it gives me ample reason to hate on a team other than them. At least the Browns don't beat the shit out of other players while claiming a win (if they win). They just usually forget that they need to catch the ball to win.
@Kuikara: I had very little riding on this game, and I could care less about both teams.
That said... I'm still pissed off about that. Seriously? You let a linebacker break off the longest run in SB history??? All the racehorses on offense couldn't catch this guy and push him over four inches? Seconds befoer the half? Really?
Forget everything else. If you scrubs can't make that play, you don't deserve to win the SB.
@dae_giovanni: If you get a chance, try and find a recording of that play. That linebacker didn't make it on his own. He made it 100 yds because of an amazing defense.
His teammates saw the interception, and got into position. They formed the most amazing wall of blockers that you'll be lucky to ever see again. When one fell, blocking one of those 'racehorses', someone stepped in and took his place. That was a superbowl run.
@Tenth: I've seen it plenty. I still think that most of it happened because for the first x seconds, Arizona stood there like "Oh darn. Hunh. Oh... oh! Wait! I have to chase that guy? *I Have to chase that guy!!!!* Wait... Crap... I.... I... Damn....."
I'll admit there was good blocking, I can't take it ALL away from Pitt... but the Cardslooking like the effing Rams, on that play....
@dae_giovanni: That's what usually happens with an interception mucho confusion. But as far as I can tell they all started running at the same time, the defence just covers it perfectly.
@seo_ace: Yep, illegal unflagged blocks in the back is the perfect defense. I've seen that before at least twice on Devin Hester returns -- referees are not built to run alongside athletes and keep an eye on the field at the same time.
Seriously, this has been a terrible year for officiating. Football is a subjective sport as it is, but when referees start missing the obvious, easy calls such as the unflagged excessive celebration or a player outright assaulting another with punches on the field, I think it's time to call it a day.
Of course, who am I kidding? I'll be back next season with the rest of the suckers. :(
While the simulations may have picked the winner...ultimately the closeness of the score is a fluke. As in previous years, I don't think it's even been close.

The Conan O'Brien one was pretty good, but the best was that Heroes vs Legends one.

It also didn't any of the missed holding and blocking in the back penalties the refs overlooked on that lumbering interception return.
I'm not a fan of either team. I just wanted to see a good clean game. I didn't. The NFL officiating all year has been shoddy.
I remember a time when punching a guy in the neck and throwing him repeatedly to the ground got you ejected, suspended, and fined.
