Am I the only one who sort of hopes that Bungie would do something with Oni? I mean, I know Oni was sort of their first real step onto a console with a 3rd person game, but I'd love to see them do something with that setting.
b) Point out that the game lacks a critical feature that Halo offers that developers won't follow through on for another franchise (like co-op in Half-Life).
We'll all bitch and moan and I'm more than happy to jump in, but I'll be honest with myself. I'll buy another Halo game and I'll anticipate another Star Wars movie. Why? Because I'm a fan, and unlike the weather, that's one thing that won't change overnight.
@Sentry459: God, I appreciate your honesty. Some people would look at that kind of statement and consider it a bad thing. But I'm always up for more Halo. And more Star Wars for that matter.
Star Wars is a little more embarrassing because almost everything outside the original trilogy sucked.
At least so far I've enjoyed everything Bungie have done with Halo.
@Desolation_Angel: Read the book. Basically Reach is where the SPARTANS had to hold off one of the biggest Covenant fleets to date. A large number of SPARTAN's died there and a huge part of Halo lore was set in stone. Their's a large amount of stuff they could do with it.
Honest question: Does bungie do anything other than Halo? I never heard of them until Halo, then Halo got wildly popular, and they seemed to latch onto it.
@somarix:
Ok I admit, I laughed. In all fairness, there needs to be a picture of a dead cow with Mario's face on it with the milker saying the same thing.
@Covert_Knight: And a Sonic Cow, A Lara Croft Cow, A Zelda Cow, I could go on. The Halo series is not being milked, consistently producing high-quality blockbuster titles that millions of people play is not "milking" a franchise. Mario has appeared in over 200 games, why do I never see "Oh God! No more Mario please! I am done with Nintendo!" on any article in which he appears? The hatred for Halo on this site is mind-boggling at times...
@gunluva is prepared to drop.: Well, I wouldn't count the figures and board games as part of the series in all fairness, if you tack that on then other things are being milked to hell and back (POKEMON) you kinda have to stick to the core iterations where I'll admit it's being milked (POKEMON) but the game continues to sell and it's still popular so it isn't so much milking as it is catering to the consumers who want another one. Supply and Demand type of deal you know? They have more parts of the story to tell, and there are more of us willing to buy another game and experience it. So it all works out.
Now if you want a see a game get milked, go look at * Hero. #haloreach
@Synthos: Board games and figures may not be part of the main games, sure, but they're still a part of the IP. What we're arguing is that the IP is being milked to high heaven. #haloreach
Ugh...I'm getting to the point at which if Bungie doesn't announce a new IP within the next year, I'm done with them. They've done enough Halo. The series doesn't need them anymore.
PLEASE, Bungie, do something else. Make a new Myth, make a new IP. Just something that isn't Halo.
@Archaotic: And I'm sure they won't miss you with all the money they're raking in.
Bungie decided to go independent again so they could do whatever they want, if whatever they want is finishing off Halo: Reach so be it, if doing whatever they want is creating a new IP afterward, so be it.
And seriously, they're just Bungie, they make good games and bad games like everyone else. I'm not expecting, anticipating, or even worried that what they do next will be any good. If they make a good game I'll buy it like I'll buy other good games, if they don't I wont. I try not to buy into this whole "fan of a certain studio thing" any more than I try to buy into being a fanboy for any given console.
@Archaotic: So for not releasing a new IP within a strict time frame you set yourself you'd ignore them completely? Rather than just ignore them until they release a new IP which would be a much better way to go about it.
Either way you always seem to manage to come on halo boards and complain about not having new IP :/
@Archaotic: the one problem i see in this franchise being considered "milked" is that theyre quality products. usually franchises' quality drops with every successive effort, and although there are just as many naysayers as there are fans of halo, there is no denying that bungie is a quality studio producing quality games. and whereas it's almost unanimous that milked franchises eventually are, plain and simple, bad games, anyone can tell that a lot of effort and hard work is put into the halo games. bungie/microsoft/whoever does try and change things that will make a better game "next time around" and listens to the fans - something that can't be said for series that are trying to get every cent out of its customers after it somehow gets popular. (like say, guitar hero(and "music hero" games theyre making - almost everyone can agree they're going too far these days, and almost everyone can agree that their first games were more quality (or at least fresh) than the others)
really, halo was going to make a fps triliogy - and they did it. an mmo fell through. an rts did get made, and now theyre making an fps that's fundamentally (well maybe not) different. and halo:reach has been announced. but 3 games more than the original isn't terrible. and let's face it, if theyre making millions with every game (and if theyre well made) well i guess theyll keep doing it. and as far as i'm concerned, that's fine with me if they're still game. i'm not getting Halo Wars. it doesn't interest me. so if im not affected by it, why should i care? if they're still making games in the same vein that i /do/ enjoy, then im happy.
i don't disagree that i would indeed love a new ip from them, my point is that bungie could be doing a lot worse of a job of milking the halo franchise.
@RPharazonius: I agree with all of that, honestly. I don't care for Gran Turismo at all, and I'd like to see Yamauchi get to work on the RPG he's been talking about wanting to make for almost a decade.
Call of Duty is one of the least interesting franchises I've ever seen in my life.
And Blizzard...well...I just want Lost Vikings 3. :[
Seriously, though. It's ALWAYS better when developers try new things instead of just retreating into their shells and going with what sells. When Bungie broke off from MS, I was hoping they'd go back to their old, actually CREATIVE mentality, maybe even make a Mac game again like in the old days.
Instead, they just keep announcing Halo games, and what's worse, they seem to be getting shorter and shorter each time, as if their playerbase is too braindead to handle even a 10-hour campaign. I'm tired of watching them slowly bleed to death in the pursuit of money.
@Archaotic: Again, good sir, 4 games (in-house) plus a game in another genre within 8 years is not bleeding a franchise to death.
Also, if a developer is known for their expertise and specialization in a certain genre of game, or even a certain niche genre, then why should they change?
Why should they throw away their expertise (or at the very least, not use all of the knowledge) on a new, untested franchise or game genre?
Ensemble Studios, known for their magnificent Age of Empires series, tried their hand at a non-base-building Halo game, and were subsequently gobbled up by Microsoft.
Westwood studios, known for their RTS expertise as well, tried their hand at an FPS game. EA noted disappointment at the sales, and gobbled the studio up.
Blizzard, who was known for their RTS successes, managed to pull off creating a successful MMO only because they had experience with the RPG aspects of Diablo, combined with a rich background of lore for Warcraft.
You see where I'm getting? A developer that is known for their franchise or their genre will often stay within that franchise or genre simply because it's easier and more affordable to do so.
Resource-wise, it's easier to recycle and expand on development resources and stay within a single franchise. It saves money and man-hours.
Valve has been using the same engine (albeit they add on to it as they go) since their Half-Life days. Portal, which has been hailed as a great new IP, reuses a lot of the textures and resources from earlier Half-Life games. Making a new engine from scratch at this point whilst still retaining a massive range of backwards compatibility in terms of computer requirements would take longer than the development of the original Half-Life 2.
Naughty Dog has stuck with platformers ever since their Crash Bandicoot days. The result up to now has been some pretty good Jak games, and the Uncharted games, which have been hailed as some of the best games on the PS3.
Insomniac has also stuck with platformers, this time almost exclusively with their Ratchet and Clank franchise. When they tried their hand at FPS games, they faced a little stumble with Resistance, and their experience with Resistance 2 has been received with mixed reviews.
Square Enix, which has been milking the Final Fantasy name since the NES days (albeit with... mostly different stories), has always stayed in the RPG realm, only moving to MMOs with a stumbling FFXI and FFXIV.
Relic Entertainment has great experience with mobile RTS games, with their Homeworld, Dawn of War, and Company of Heroes games. Does that mean they should try out an FPS or an action adventure game? They're doing so with Space Marine, and responses have been mixed.
Again, do you see my point? Just like in anything else, once a certain entity has been typecast, it's easier for them to stay stable in their niche. Any change of plans might result in being swallowed up by a greater entity unless it specifically agrees that it will not do so.
Should you change cities and careers every 10 years just because you've been doing the same thing for a decade and milking your career during that entire time? No, that's insanely foolhardy. Change is not necessarily a good thing.

This is not surprising really. Halo games make money. Its the same with every big franchise, the temptation to make another game is too strong, because of the guaranteed financial success.

The theory that Wii Motion Plus was simply a knee-jerk reaction to whatever 3D controller Microsoft had in the wings seems to have a little more weight now.
Seriously. Nintendo's primary market is people who don't care (or even know) that the Wii remote doesn't have 1:1 motion. Who is this peripheral for?
I can’t see how motion plus is going to sell very well. After all where Wii succeeds is being a kind of family fun party console. Playing games that forgive mistakes and make it as easy for your granny to play tennis as it is for your 3 year old nephew! are these people (non-gamers, the people who have made the Wii a run away success) really going to be interested in buying an add on for the controller to make the games less forgiving and more time consuming to master? I don’t think so
@RalphBabblebox: I'm going to go ahead and guess that with the exception of WiiSports Resort...Wii Motion Plus will be an entirely optional feature that games will be up to the game to support.
Heck, for all we know WiiSports Resort may not even REQUIRE MotionPlus, and could just be a way of demonstrating how the controls improve with the device attached.
Of course, it's not like 3rd party devs are making smart use of EXISTING Wii Motion controllers at the moment.
