I never go to official sites, since the information there...

Skipping the anecdotal evidence (which, at face value, means absolutely nothing), with this is that it tarnishes the first impressions newcomers get for upcoming games. How many non 'core gamers' look at sites like Kotaku, Gamasutra or even sites like 1Up or IGN?
With games underperforming (LittleBigPlanet), studios folding and the current economic climate, every sale counts. You can't afford potential buyers to sour on a placeholder ad site (or even worse, porn!).
I just went to killzone2.com - it had me fooled into thinking it was an actual site for a minute. But no, it's obviously a domain squatter. He's just auto-culling stories about Killzone 2 from around the net. So not only is he domain squatting, he's also basically stealing content.
No, I would not be annoyed if the site wasn't owned by the publisher or developer. Here's why: nothing starts with typing in a random domain to get information any longer. With the various naming formats, as well as how specific one can get while searching these days, there's no point in typing in "http://www.thisgame.com" anymore. Just search, you'll get to the information you want more quickly.
@LordChris915: yes, killzone 3 is shaping up to be "the only reason EVER to own a PS3." day one buy for me. (did you see that epic explosion in the KZ3 trailer??it was teh 1337!!)
