First Xbox LIVE Community Games, then Kodu. Which means they have little use for their original games creator, Popfly.

Released to minimal fanfare last year as a set of templates upon which people could build games with little or no programming experience, Popfly never really caught on. Which is why, come August 24, it'll be shut down, with users asked to direct their efforts towards XNA or, for those with less time for coding, Kodu.

<![CDATA[Microsoft Releases PopFly Game Creator Beta]]> Just ahead of some related sessions at PAX, Microsoft has released a beta version of the game creation components for PopFly.

PopFly is a creative tool for making Silverlight (think Flash, only more Microsofty) apps and games.

This beta comes with more templates for different game type and other special features like scroll wheel support, sprite editors and tools to insert video and images into game scenes.

<![CDATA[Microsoft Unveils PAX Schedule]]> Microsoft have finalized the list of demos they will be bringing along to PAX next weekend.

Those champing at the bit for more glimpses of Gears of War 2 will not be disappointed — there will even be a couple of Gears signing sessions, should you have any merchandise you need to boost on eBay.

Other demos we would class as 'eagerly awaited' are Halo Wars and Project Origin, but MS will be showing off their new Games Creation and 'Mashups' tool PopFly as well as more info on the New Xbox Experience.

It is those 'TBA' demos on the Saturday & Sunday afternoons, that have us intrigued, though. What could it be? Is it a new game? Could it be the long awaited Next-Gen updates of Minesweeper and Freecell? Have they finally gone mental and are bringing out a portable Xbox?

Exciting!

<![CDATA[Microsoft Release Free Game Creator]]> Last week, Microsoft announced the release of PopFly, a simple program that allows users to create games without the need to know any code. Taking a number of genres as a foundation, PopFly offers a range of templates based on classic arcade games, upon which you can import your own characters, backgrounds, etc. Once done, the games can then be hosted, on stuff like websites, blogs, Facebook pages or even your Vista sidebar. It' Silverlight-only, which is a slight hassle, and is fairly basic, but hey, who said everything on this world had to be perfect?
