i remember as a boy, me and my friends would dream about a real-time pokemon game, indepth and it imitates the cartoon (i guess a mmorpg if anything)
that dream has been long dead, and this confirms it further... you have red/blue and gold/silver, anything past that is just added mini-games with minor improvements with battle modes that just werent polished (2v2)... and yes, i was a poke-holic pretty much up to FireRed after which I asked myself why I was still playing the same game from 10years ago just in more colourful images
@0suited: Damn, so I wasn't the only one with that dream as well?
Did it also include pokemon you can actually see hiding in the grass or trees that you can choose to fight or will attack you instead of random encounters?
@Daryl26: @0suited: Hey! That was my dream too. Though it was more than a rumor than a dream; we always thought that the next game coming out was that real-time first-person-POV pokemon game. How disappointing each new game has seemed in comparison to that idea! An actual adventure pokemon game. *Le Sigh*
Admittedly, however, Gold and Silver were my favorite iterations of Pokemon. They were quintessential pokemon, at its best: the new pokemon the game introduced were interesting and still memorable, and I remember being excited about them with friends. The game introduced a new world, but let you go back and play through Kanto as well, which was brilliant. So many new things... night/day cycles, eggs, all sorts of things to do, and no mandatory ribbon contests or poffins or weird stickers or dressing rooms. It was just... fantastic.
Of course, HeartGold and SoulSilver are maybe the worst names ever? Running out of precious metals, are we Nintendo?
I cannot buy anything with the words HeartGold or SoulSilver on it. It makes them sound like the type of Pokémon games Twilight characters would play.
Well you're quite the respectful journalist, eh? There's nothing wrong with those names. You're fine playing with cuddle animals with pun-based names, but the SECOND they have...perfectly fine names, HELL NO?
@Cervidanti: I, too, cannot buy such games because they make me question my masculinity. Is Nintendo trying to make us all gay?! Blasphemers!
Seriously though, the original GSC was the best generation of Pokemon. If someone decides against buying the remakes simply because of their names, they don't deserve to play them in the first place.
@PuppyGuarder: well thats your opinion. Me? Based on information about the original gold and silver, gold definitely appears to be the way to go. Silver has the better looking legendary but if I'm not mistaken you can only get an growlithe/arcanine in gold which lately has become my fire pokemon of choice. As far as starters go they're all pretty butt ugly but totodile does seem to be the easiest type to win with
I'm pretty sure I've never played Gold/Silver.( Ruby was the first one I owned, I think Yellow might be the first one I played.) Is it really the best generation? Also, should I play Gold/Silver before I buy this?
@Four--Eyes: Gold/Silver was the best Pokemon game. I don't think many people argue otherwise.
No reason to get the original first, it's the same game, be it on GB or DS, but I imagine a little of the charm will got lost in translation in the remake, as it does in many remakes. (coughNewSuperMarioBroscough)
Just call it gold or silver. No one will notice anymore. Everyone knows you can't play the old ones on your DS. And even if you could, the batteries are all dead and you can't save your game, so of course you're playing the new ones.
Ooooh, a delight! Can't wait. I adored Silver so much, I'll pick this up in a heartbeat.
That said... The Pokémon Company didn't release a particularly 'exciting' trailer, did they? Seems like they could've at least added some music. But then again, it's Pokémon - so who gives a fuck!?
Yesterday's Sonic post just got me thinking about this: Pokemon has more or less been able to stay strong and relevant through all the years, with many different spin-offs and competition (Monster Hunter, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc.). Sonic also had TV shows and you could argue a lot of competition as well (of course Mario, but also less popular titles - and I'm probably just grasping for connections here, but - Blinx, Gex, Crash, etc).
Do you think this is more because Nintendo's marketing is outstanding and overall they just made a more appealing product with spin-offs, yes, but also the flagship games that retain the same basic mechanics while expanding on them each release; or because Sega has come so far from what made them stand out in the beginning and is trying a whole lot of different ideas on how to keep Sonic relevant? Or perhaps some third variable is the case?
* I turned 20 a couple months ago and I'm still so very excited about the CLEAR superior title, SoulSilver.
@MC Double Def DP: I think it's the second point. Sonic could have thousands of spin offs as long as his main titles remained top notch and AAA. Unfortunately, they haven't quite.

@GameBuddy - Doesn't like tomatoes on his sandvich.: Yeah, I think it's more of this, too. People constantly cite Sonic Rush and Brawl as some of the best, or best in recent history. I wouldn't mind Sonic doing asinine things like sword fighting and race car driving if he still ran very fast on a 2D-plane or just ran really fast in 3D (since I've heard great things about half of Unleashed). Many spin-offs while not "forgetting where they came from" continues to work very well for Nintendo and I would love for Sega to catch wind.
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: That couldn't be the case though, because if no one gave the Sonic games a chance, I doubt they'd have the money to keep producing them (unless you're saying take the games for what they're worth and stop comparing them to the classics. Then my argument would be they're just not very good games to begin with and cite bugs and controls). I'm one of the many who grew up on Sonic that despite being let down a million-and-one times for that next GREAT title, still contiunes to hold onto hope for it and doesn't (openly)cry whenever I see a new headline and his face (he's still actually my favorite video game character, despite all he's been through).
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: I know there's evidence to support good sales of the not-so-good sonic games... but I feel for you, bro. So many people haven't even tried heroes or unleashed enough to see the good and the potential in either title and just bash the crap out of it.
I think I'm going to skip these remakes. I played silver back in the day and after playing my first copy of diamond for 140 hours before it was tragically stolen from my car the one time I accidentally left my ds out there, playing through it a second time for around 100 hours, transferring over my collection to platinum (I never want to go through that again unless they come up with a feature to move them all at once), and only now finishing up the story mode I don't really want to work up to the point where I can focus on building a strong team again anytime soon.
Hmm... just realized how sad it is that I've spent so much time playing a "children's" game. Oh well, I enjoy the games a ton. And I'm going to keep hoping for that pokemon mmo nintendo has promised we'll never see.
There is no shame in enjoying pokemon. I have a wife, full time job and I am now 25 years old and I still enjoy pokemon games. There is just something about collecting and evolving aspect in it that is so addictive.
@Methusalah: Oh on a side note according to this [www.pokemon.com] arceaus will be legitimately available to american fans soon. Hopefully I don't miss whatever promotion provides it. And darkrai is available to platinum owners over wifi right now.
@Crash__Man: Beat this one, then sell it before the combined one comes out. (Prism? Rainbow? Pokemon my little sparkly unicorn?). It won't cost more than a rental if you do it that way. eBay is your friend.

Thanks for the announcement, Nintendo! It's a weight off my mind :P

Bulbapedia Cyndaquil Article
One Fire-type Pokémon that technically 'farts' to produce flame is Chimchar, the Chimp-Pokémon.
Bulbapedia Chimchar Article
The gases used to produce the flame are located in the stomach, so I'd say that sounds more like a fart to me. ^_^
