That works out to about 12,600 tokens to each player to use toward virtual clothes and goodies for their avatars.

"We've received hundreds of stories from players that tell us Pogo.com has been a cost effective way for them to escape from their day, have fun and connect with friends and family", said Pogo Community Manager Tahd Frentzel. "From a mom cutting down on long distance calls by chatting and playing with her military daughter stationed in Germany to couples having "date night" online while one is traveling on business, we are so proud to provide a fun and familiar place for people to stay close to those they love."

Pogo introduced Pogo Minis avatars to the Club Pogo audience in 2005, and has since extended the online avatars to its free gaming site to allow even more people to express themselves while playing casual games. Free registration on Pogo.com is required and the deal ends on April 30.

"In these tough economic times, we want to give players a place to escape and relax at home without breaking their budget," said Michael Marchetti, Pogo.com General Manager. "Pogo.com provides a great value by providing players a vehicle to play countless hours on games they love while connecting with friends and family — for free."

<![CDATA[Smokers Become Gamers (Who Smoke)]]> Casual gaming site POGO wants you to stop smoking. And while we're a little late on the bandwagon since yesterday was National Smoke-Free Day (which, as there are no smokers left standing today, worked out just great), POGO is still offering special "kick the habit" play rooms, game nights, mini items and even e-cards (back away from the e-cards, people). It's a nice thought, and maybe video games are addictive enough to replace nicotine...but you'd probably have to light them on fire and breathe in the toxic fumes of burning box art paint for the full effect. <![CDATA[Tumble Bees Impressions]]>

I was really impressed with Tumble Bees last night at the EA event.

The game is sort of like a blend between Hexic and Scrabble. The playing field is a honeycomb, but still looks a lot like the gem game and instead of the colored pieces you have letters. The object of the game is top tap on the letters to spell out words, thus clearing the field. There's also wildcards and bonus pieces, but that just adds to the game. Every time you spell a word you fill up a pot with honey, once it's totally full you win the game.

As with most successful casual games, it sounds overly simplistic, but it's also devilishly addictive and the best part? It actually improves your spelling and vocabulary. I can't wait to play a bit more of this Pogo.com game when I get home and, better still, sit down Tristan (now six, thank you very much) in front of the game and see how he does with it.

<![CDATA[EA Taps Rosie O'Donnell For Charity]]> EA's casual games division Pogo has teamed up with Donald Trump's greatest enemy (no, not wind) Rosie O'Donnell to raise awareness within the Pogo.com community of players about Rosie's charity, Rosie's For All Kinds Foundation.

In addition to pretend-liking Tom Cruise at one point, Rosie press release-likes the Pogo brand of casual games and talks about her hardcore gaming past.

I played a lot of videogames as a kid and now I am an avid Club Pogo member and have been for quite awhile. I play Word Whomp, Tumble Bees, Poppit! Squelchies, Qwerty, and World Class Solitaire - I like to mix it up. I'm online almost every night! It is a great way to relax and stay in touch with people out of state. There is a grandmother in Kansas that I play with ... she has no idea who I am. We talk for hours about her grandkids and her latest projects. I love it!

EA is sponsporing a Pogo Play & Chat contest that will give players a chance spend an evening playing and chatting with her online. Don't crash the site registering, guys!

Funny, I always pictured Rosie as more of a Counter-Strike or Halo 2 player. Real mouthy. I can also picture her playing some Burger Time. Or Food Fight. I can also picture myself going to hell.

EA'S POGO.COM AND ROSIE O'DONNELL TEAM UP TO LAUNCH 'POGO CARES BENEFITING ROSIE'S FOR ALL KIDS FOUNDATION'

11 Million Players Help Pogo Raise Money to Help Kids in Need

With the help of its players, Pogo.com will donate $30K to the Foundation.

Players are invited to participate in several online events at Pogo.com. The first event in the Pogo Cares program is the "Play & Chat with Rosie Sweepstakes" where anyone who plays "Tumble Bees" between May 17th and May 23rd will automatically be entered into a random drawing for a chance to win an opportunity to play and chat live with Rosie O'Donnell during the month of June**. Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the Sweepstakes. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. Void where prohibited. Eligibility restrictions apply. EA also announced that from May 22nd to July 17th Club Pogo players can collect special limited edition Rosie-designed items to customize their Pogo Minis, free of charge (Club Pogo subscription required). The Rosie-Mini Collection includes cool fashion t-shirts, sweatshirts, backgrounds and accessories.

Rosie O'Donnell stated, "I played a lot of videogames as a kid and now I am an avid Club Pogo member and have been for quite awhile. I love it!"

Vice President and General Manager of Pogo, Karen Schulman commented, "The Pogo community has a history of coming together to raise money and awareness to help those in need. We are very excited to work with Rosie O'Donnell and her 'For All Kids' Foundation to support causes that are important to Pogo players, such as education and early childhood development."

EA launched its first Pogo Cares Program in 2001 with a campaign to help seriously ill children maintain a better life while going through medical treatment. Since then, the Pogo community has come together to support many other issues including: the fight against breast cancer and heart & lung health. In the last two years, Pogo players have successfully raised over $100,000 in charitable giving.

The Rosie's For All Kids Foundation was founded by Rosie in 1997, and has helped to build 27 day care centers in low- income areas. It has provided 24.6M in grants to over 900 child-related programs. More recently, the Foundation invested $3M to help children and their families in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina and built the first-of-its-kind Children's Plaza and Family Center on the largest FEMA trailer park in Louisiana. The Foundation will provide ongoing support to the Center. O'Donnell has long been a child advocate — especially in the areas of early childhood education, foster care and adoption — and the Foundation will now support a Foster Care and Adoption Advocacy program in Washington DC to help bring about reforms in child care policy in the Congress.

<![CDATA[EA, Blizzard and China]]> An insider just dropped word that leading Chinese game operator The9 and video game maker Electronic Arts are planning a joint venture deal in which The9 runs EA's casual game platform, Pogo, in China. This will supposedly be announced in early April.

In related news, The9 and Blizzard/VUG are in a dispute over The Burning Crusade, the expansion for World of Warcraft. Blizzard/VUG is apparently taking that stance that The9 does not get it as part of their original deal, and that the Chinese operator needs to pay an additional license fee and/or give Blizzard/VUG shares in the company. According to our insider, things have gotten to the point where Blizzard is even threatening to turn Burning Crusade into WoW 2 and find another partner for China.

With the country being WoW's largest market in terms of "subscribers," the stakes are high. But, who really has the upper hand there: the operators or the developers?
