I'd like to suggest "The Maw" for the long shot dark horse. It held a great deal of imagination, I had a lot of fun and felt more creative and inspired than most of the games offered here.

I know its going to win but it shouldnt, because its just COD4 put in the dishwasher. COD4 was amazing, redefining the genre forever. MW2 (COD5 1/2) is literally the same game with a slightly altered story line and a few new guns. Same good things about COD4, same problems as COD4.
We all know its going to win the the Spike GTOY, and every other category its running in. But it shouldn't.
For me, its going to be Assassin's Creed 2. AC1 had too many problems to be fun, but AC2 fixed those problems and added a lot more stuff to it. Its a sandbox game done right.
Dragon Age gets an honourable mention, as does Borderlands and Batman.

Uncharted 2 has to win. I haven't felt so awestruck by a game since I played half life 2 for the first time. Which is saying a lot because to this day half life 2 is one of the best games ever made.

Also, I got my wisdom teeth out a day after release so I was playing it on a percocet high, so I was cheery and excited the entire time I played it.
1000/1000 as well! :D

Uncharted 2 was good from what I played, but I only got to play for less than 2 hours total so I'm not comfortable picking that. It's probably as good a choice as any, though.
Modern Warfare 2 mostly lived up to the hype, but a few nitpicky things like the dedicated servers issue, a short single-player mode and no co-op campaign (spec ops is ok, but I'd rather see a full mode with co-op) knock it down a few pegs. The multiplayer will keep me hooked for quite a while though.
Games people have already forgotten about since they came out early this year, but are definitely in the mix: Punch-Out!! and Street Fighter IV.
Definitely NOT game of the year: Borderlands or NSMB Wii. Both are fun, but the praise on those two is terrifyingly overblown.

For me... boy, I don't know... I've had a ton of fun with Bayonetta, and why shouldn't that count? It came out this year.

While I'm firm in my choice of Uncharted 2 for game of the year, I would be remiss if I didn't give additional mention for two very special games.
That Game Company's "Flower" needs no introduction, and Daniel Benmergui's "Today I Die" should be familiar for the die hard kotakuite.
