Great question about the contradiction between game-mechanic and story-telling. Good answer as well, even if it was very short. Lovable rogue and psychotic serial killer..
It's interesting to think about.. it's something that probably wouldn't be an issue just a few years ago. So maybe games are evolving a little bit after all? :)
About the possible ties between sport games and "regular" games, I was a bit disappointed by the lack of questions about Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City, a game for which Amy Hennig is credited as game designer (if mobygames does not lie).
Odd coincidence, that pretty obscure game (at least to me - but I played maybe 3 occidental console games during the 16-bit era) was mentioned in the comments of the news about these fan made recreation of Jordan commercials.
That said, these podcasts are pretty interesting because all in all there are not that many outlets that talk about game design. Having game designers talk about the things they try to balance, the way they tackle problems, what they try to achieve, etc, even if it is not in great depth (the format does not allow it), is very refreshing and informative.
@zåɳzißarleɠёпȡ: Have you been following the news on the site? We're shifting to CBS Radio's tech. I''ll be recording my part live in their studio with their professionals. Expect a massive upgrade in audio quality. That'll be in January.
@Stephen Totilo: I missed that news as well. It's great news, as some of the conversations can be difficult to follow. I always listen to the Giantbomb Cast before KTR, whose sound quality is crystal clear.
Thanks for upgrading in January!
I'd like to listen to it but don't quite have the time. I'm just interested if she dropped any particularly juicy hints on Uncharted 2 DLC, as that is very, very relative to my interests.
@Mit:
..um, she said there were.. quote: "lots of cool stuff coming up". But that she couldn't talk about it in detail.
Great model they've chosen for the online, imo. The way they're saying - we're going to add a little bit once in a while (there was a new map, and the experimental weekends thing). So that people will hold on the game instead of renting it, or getting rid of it early, and so on.
Instead of the entire... "here's some DLC we've prepared before the game was even finished, so we can cash in right away".. like Riccitello at EA.
@Ashurahori: I caught one. She said she didn't know what Eidos/Squenix wanted to do with LoK. She said they are very fond of the series (which is comforting), but that they were focusing heavily on Tomb Raider right now.
I've liked 1 of the 9 or so Tomb Raider games, I've liked all but 1 of the Legacy of Kain games (Blood Omen 2 was bleh). Eidos is focusing on the wrong series.
@AdeptVoice: I just wanted to know ONE thing. One single thing. If she considered Defiance to be truly an end to the series, seeing as it kinda closed up every little hole of the story quite well, but still left it open-ended (and I like it that way, better to be open-ended thanwith a shitty ending)
@Ashurahori: You are in luck! Amy read your comment and asked me to pass along the following response:
"Yes, I meant for Defiance to be the end of the Soul Reaver story (Raziel’s story). I wanted the conclusion to be open-ended enough that the story could be continued with Kain (if Crystal Dynamics chose to do so), while still giving enough resolution that it could be the end of the story (with the player left to imagine Kain’s next actions for themselves) if no sequel was created."
@Stephen Totilo: Ahhh! I can die in peace with knowing that bit of info now since I had so many questions on her intentions for the series! Thank you soooo much!
@Stephen Totilo: YES! Thank you so much. That was aaaaaaall I needed to know. The story's really finished now, then. I'm good. I'd just feel kinda uneasy if the game was never meant to be truly completed that way.
:( didn't get on the show this week. Although I'd say as much as Legacy of Kain got mentioned, I'd say my question probably got answered before I got home from work.
All I can say is, I really feel kinda sorry for the guy screening the calls (Fahey?) because every week he has to put up with my crappy mic making my voice sound too bassy, as well as me being just me and talking too fast so he can't get the question off me :P
I'll definitely download it to get the first half an hour that I missed, though!
@mp3: Pretty much only what we know: it was one of the best games on the Dreamcast, and that it's still on the foreseeable backburner at Crystal Dynamics in favour of Tomb Raider. Though if there's going to be any sequels, then Hennig won't be working on them, as her future's with Naughty Dog and can't see herself going back.
That, in a nutshell. Listen to the whole thing though as, in my opinion, there wasn't really any boring and predictable questions in it. It was a great hour and I can't wait to see who's lined up for next week.
Annnnnd it's time for me to get to work. Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I'd like to see a show time that's a couple hours earlier or later so it has less chance of being during working hours (for the NA region at least). Just my two cents; of course I'll still download it later.
This is really great news. Congratulations Kotaku for the step up. Theres not another site really doing a "Call-In" videogame talk show. I really appreciate all you guys do for the industry. Being on a majority of the shows have been a pleasure. The best part of the show is the opinions and discussions brought on by the editors and callers of the site. Many controversial and provocative subjects have been elaborated on in the shows and many things have been discussed in elaborate detail. In the end, the show stands as a testament to how much Video gaming has become more of a major industry, rather than the misconception that they are simply just "games".
First, before I begin my letter creed, I must say that that black BREAKINGZER NEWS panel at the front scares me. ._.
But first, what I found so nice about this site is that it was a huge community, peaking at the brim with brilliant and personal editors to which we could actually get in touch with. This site, unlike the other sellouts like (ahem) Joystiq, actually made the comments a central part of the site, and righteously showed us so with regular maintenance and upgrades of the comment system unlike ANOTHER SITE (koff koff Engadget, koff koff IGN), and though you may agree or disagree with the star system (many flaws, many), it does help to show off the talent on this site. And I know, I'm speaking out of my ass with this star in tow, but it doesn't really matter to me, as long as the commentors here shine with gutbusting brilliance still.
But anyways, it's nice to see a site grow so much from the once-niche site it was to becoming a major feature in review showings in ads everywhere. It's interesting to see how much this site has grown from the 2 years (from 07, bitches!) that I've been here. Now, Kotaku has finally hit the big time with CBS Radio, and maybe, just maybe, a Kotaku TV segment can form out of TechTV's ashes and take its place in cable culture.
Personally, I haven't heard a single snippet of KRadio, but now, you have finally made me consider getting a weekly subscription to this podcast. I'm sure it must be wonderful.
While frankly, I'm too much of a turtle and chicken to call in, it'll be "interesting ;) " to hear your voice. Hell, I was shocked whenI finally heard Frucci's and Mahoney's voices on the Giz.
Happy 6 years to you, and may you continue to kick some gaming ass in the game reporter business.

And yet, EA's games sell tons more, and cost less to produce. (Poor Riccitello.)
