Britain, Your PS3s Will Stream TV As Of September 10 (Everyone Else, Little Later)

Europe's PlayTV service for the PS3 is looking very nice. We already knew SCEE were looking at a release window of around September, but yesterday Sony's David Reeves started handing out actual dates and actual info. The UK will be the first country to get PlayTV, with it due to start up on September 10, with a staggered roll-out across Europe in the weeks after. As a bonus treat, he also confirmed that you'll be able to record TV onto your HDD at the same time you're playing a game, with the necessary code having been quietly slipped into the 2.41 update. Oh, and before anyone not up to speed on PlayTV asks, no, there are no plans to bring it to the US.

PlayTV Hits Europe In September

Looks like those SCE Australia reports were spot-on. At yesterday's SCEE event in London, Sony announced that PlayTV - Sony Europe's HDTV tuner & recorder for the PS3 - would be launching in Europe sometime in September, for the price of €99/£80. No idea how well this kind of thing will do at market (it's an awful lot of money considering it's skimming off your PS3's HDD), but as someone yet to fork out for a HD tuner for my own TV, I'll be keeping an eye on it later this year regardless.

SCEE Plays Up Social Gaming At Gamer's Day 08

At Sony Europe's Gamers Day event, the company took care to emphasize the "social gaming" angle it's pursuing. The company focused on "games where players of all ages socialize through gaming," pointing out EyeToy products, puzzle titles and Buzz!: Quiz TV, where groups can play trivia games on a variety of topics over PlayStation Network. PlayTV Hits European, Aussie PS3s In Q4

PlayTV, Sony's digital television tuner/recording device for the PS3, has finally been given a release window. Speaking with Sony Australia during a techy meeting this morning, Gizmodo AU were told that the system would launch in Australia during Q4 2008, "roughly a month" after it's released in Europe. They were also told that it would retail "for less than AUD$200" (USD$185). Any Americans not already aware, now's a good time to remind you that, sorry, thanks to the way your TV is broadcast, you will never ever see this in the US.

PlayTV Has Zero Restrictions On Recorded Video Footage

Somewhat-exciting news, Europeans! SCEE have revealed that PlayTV, the PS3's digital TV set-top box and recorder, will let you do almost anything with your video files once they've been recorded. Anything?
Anything you like, really, as long as you do it legally. It's in its raw format...We've talked to our legal department about it. All we're doing is moving it out of PlayTV and to the cross-media bar as if it was any other recording. So hopefully users won't do stuff they shouldn't do with it.
"Hopefully"? In other words, go nuts distributing those TV show downloads, you crazy kids.

A Look At PS3's PlayTV

A BBC blogger got some hands on with the upcoming PlayTV. PlayTV is a jazzed up cable box for the PS3. The menus look pretty swank. The neat part? You can set something to record and switch off your console; It will then switch back on to record the show and shut itself off. Also, it supports subtitles and can live stream broadcasts onto the PSP. Slick! More »
