I was hoping for it to succeed, but one of the folks expecting it to fail.
I was one of the people who bought Eye of Judgment, and the game struggled to even read the cards correctly on a set placemat. Expecting it to react realistically would have been absurd.
Of course, I don't expect any better from Natal, as it still suffers from that "real world" problem. #eyepet
@Ad-hominem: Then again, I remember a lot of people being wary of the Wii and its technology when it was first announced.
I know, I know, they're entirely different projects in terms of scope and depth, but there's still room to be pleasantly surprised.
That said, emotiv's headset dealy has been described by various sources I generally trust as either good or bad, so the jury's still out on that one.
I don't think non-traditional gaming is a necessity yet, but pushing the boundaries past the virtual-reality shooter of 1995 county fairs is a welcome change. #eyepet
@Laute: Using the Wii as a comparison isn't a particularly good idea, when you realize that there are still people complaining about poor responsiveness with Wii controls. #eyepet
@PoweredByHentai: What about it? It's for people that like to stay in touch that know each other really well and have a reason to want to see each other. None of that applies to me at all. #eyepet
@MrBionic: Well, if you don't have anyone to keep tabs on from time to time, then yeah, I can see how the EyeToy isn't going to be all that useful to you. I guess you'll have to wait until the Sphere comes out so that you can grief your LBP buddies. #eyepet
@PoweredByHentai: Yah, I pretty much only got it because it was on sale and I wanted to make rude gestures at people in Burnout: Paradise, but that got old really fast, and I meant to get LBP at the time, so I could import textures and stuff, but never did end up getting LBP. I should really do that. #eyepet
Yeah, it's what I feared. Not just the technical problems, but also the absence of design. Media Molecule, Insomniac or Naughty Dog (teams that know how to make good platforming games). It's a half-baked tech demo, and its potential will probably never be fully achieved as SCE will file this under "Big Failures."
@FP_slomo788: well its just because this game is not a priority for SCE. Thats why ND, Insomniac, Molecule and top tier developers won't do this title (or any on PS eye).
There is just no potential interest in camera yet (or market), but for kids this will be a nice present.
If your child will smile, then its enough about this game. #eyepet
@Golgari: I agree 100%, but (well I guess 99%) I think everyone should still expect quality from the game, even if it's targeted at children. If they will be frustrated by the technical problems or if they will get bored after one hour of doing the same things, then it was not ready to be sold.
But then again, who can predict how a child will react? Maybe they will love it all the way after all. #eyepet
@FP_slomo788: I doubt it. It'll probably be several initial moments of "Awww!" followed by immediate frustration.
I wish we knew what was more at fault here. Is the EyeToy simply too outdated to allow a game of this sort to work, was the development team simply cut short with their time, or were they incompetent in their development? #eyepet
"You know something's wrong when the tutorial tells you to empty your living room of furniture ..."
Yeah ... that's a pretty big issue there. I was hoping I'd be able to run the pet on my coffee table, but I'm not going to move everything when I want to turn the thing on.
Natal is supposed to be able to adapt to furniture in the room, so it'll be interesting to see how it compares ... whenever it is actually released. #eyepet
@jayntampa:
This is proof of the technical disadvantage that the PS Eye has when compared to Natal.
A regular webcam + software can only go so far... #eyepet
Typical PR bullshit. I fail to see how a computer can possibly detect someone's age. Humans can have trouble even getting into the right decade for another humans age, but Sony claim they can do it with technology? Haven't we all learned about Sony and their failed hype and promises? Hell, haven't Sony learned from it? I'll judge the hardware when it's in my living room, not based on what they claim.
@shufflemoomin: I don't think it's going to give you an exact age analysis. But since I have worked on facial recognition software algorithms some 7 years ago I can say that if the detection program uses enough points you can make the facial wrinkles and the depth of certain facial lines like around the cheek, the mouth, below the eyes (if it's really good but that needs good lighting conditions and such) and so on. You can estimate how old a person looks but that doesn't mean the actual age. A wrinkly 25 year old would be put in the 40s category and such. It depends on how many points are being taken into consideration, what they define as aging which usually is a combination of x factors and perhaps it takes into consideration the colour of the hair too.
I can say that it's definitely possible but it's not easy and it does depend on lighting conditions and the algorithm.
@shufflemoomin: Some people really don't know what they're talking about. these are technologies already in application in digital imaging devices (digital camera, digital camcorder, security systems). They're refined to the point that digital imaging devices regularly offer preset settings like "baby face", "group picture", "portrait", with facial recognition for auto-focus. Some of JVC's higher-end HD Everio camcorders can recognize up to 16 faces on the same picture and use an adaptative focus across the image.
These are small devices with small processing power. The same technologies can be applied to a gaming console with much finer calculations, and actually produce viable results. It's interesting to see that these kinds of technologies go back and forth between different departments within a company, paving the way for new types of play control.
This might never find its way in your living room, but then again, a lot of technologies don't, or only will in a few years. My father-in-law worked on developing Blu-ray laser diodes for Phillips about 10 years ago, back when everyone thought harnessing a blue laser for optical storage devices was impossible or not commercially viable. Sometimes you just need to give new technologies the time they need to mature.
@KuromanKuro Live and PSN: Actually, I wonder if anyone will use this tech that way. As in, watching themselves have "relations" on the TV while wearing different faces.
"Why do you always want to do it from behind, honey? Is it so that you can watch me on the TV looking like Naruto?"
Program uses image from camera to detect a face using some algorithm. With a positive detection the face is locked onto, and then the algorithm attempts to maintain tracking while also start its secondary algorithms, to detect facial expressions.
With these coordinates and data, the program then superimposes a model on top of the point at which the face is recognized, making adjustments based upon 3d movement. ( turning head, moving away, forward, etc etc ).
All in all, the "tech" is old, the implementation is substandard, and this does nothing to excite me.
Troll uses mouse on screen to click a link using some muscle spasms. With a negative intention the link is locked onto, and then the troll attempts to maintain attention while also start its secondary intentions, to create scornful facial expressions.
With these intentions and attention, the troll then superimposes a false intelligence on top of the message at which the post is posted, making complaints based upon 2d text.
All in all, the "message" is old, the execution is substandard, and this does nothing to excite me.
