I'll agree with the GTAIV argument. I hated the controls in that game. Shooting a gun from a vehicle with the bumper felt strange to say the least. That game just wants to be too many things for me to be able to enjoy it. Guess it's just one of those franchises that isn't for me. :-/
I can drive cars in GTA4, but what gets me in the PS3 version is how I always have to put the phone in sleep mode so people don't call me in the middle of missions - so I zip through the menu, and sometimes activate the "SIXAXIS Tutorial" option instead of opening the Options menu! Then I'm stranded on foot at the airport and I have to load my game!!!
I don't know about GTA IV but GTA: Liberty City Stories about has me at the end of my rope. It's my first GTA, to be fair, so it may be just I just am not getting the hang of things. But screw these cars! I usually go for the mopeds, because they seem to respond faster, but for this Rescue the Morons at the Freaking Gas Station mission I "must" steal a four-seater. I've failed this 18 times. Bah! Controlling the skateboard in Bully was not this difficult. Also, if I remember correctly, attempting (albeit foolishly) to skateboard up a flight of stairs did not result in your death and/or the skateboard's swift and spectacular combustion.
I've taken it a step further; I've kicked whole consoles over large distances. Wrestlemania 2000... I've told this story before, so I'll skip it here, but suffice to say that this game made me more angry than a Bi-polar bear in a supermarket.
Devil May Cry 3 also made me piss a stream of blood. I played Devil May Cry 1, 2 and 3 but I haven't touched 4. Ninja Gaiden... nuff said. Silent Hill V, just because the dodging system was more terrifying than any of the actual monsters in the game. That's all I can think of right now.
I agree that GTAIV is a controller-throwing level of suck, but not because the cars are tough to control. I realize I am alone in this, and no I am no JRPG fanboy...I just think GTAIV was a bad game. Being able to do all this real-life crap in a game did not fill the void in-between missions, and the actual missions were no fun either. I gave it like 6 hours, and it never picked up, so I put it down for good.
While I think Home has a lot of potential (like giving us a virtual E3 to wander about in), he is right on the money here. I think I've signed on a total of four times since it's release... I mean "open beta." Every single time, I have tried to play a game of bowling, and I sit there for twenty minutes never playing a game of bowling. Just sitting there as my toon stares at me with cold, lifeless eyes.
I get what they were trying to go for ("Look it's like real life!") but in the virtual arena it just comes off as annoying and doing no one any favors by holding onto it.
No Mario Kart Wii? I dont know how many times i thought about throwing that wheel across the room after being hit with a blue shell on the last stretch for the BAZILLIONTH time.
I'd say Mirror's Edge gets the award for that. Hell, it actually DID make me throw my controller. Good idea, bad execution. Too much trial and error. When I have to die over and over to know what to do, something is up. Stupid faulty friggin' runner's vision.. Stupid freedom-less game. Screw you Mirror's Edge. SCREW YOU!
@potatojenkins: I don't think Time Trials have ever annoyed as much in any other video game. Looking at some of the top scorers on the leaderboard, it just doesn't make sense. They're apparently simply moving faster than me; they're not just taking the fastest route, they're actually just not being slowed down by the stupid things in the engine that keep getting in my way, and I have no idea how they're doing it. I'm not calling foul play, but I'm thinking that the engine isn't perfect and there are some loopholes that I just haven't tripped over yet.
@Taiyz: I was waiting for this. I'm completely tired of seeing people complain about the game. I mean seriously, I've gone back and played this game over and over, and sure, it was hard at first; I never had any issue with Mirror's Edge, and literally cannot comprehend how people are finding it difficult. I mean sure, I still die on occasion, but the mechanics aren't that difficult to figure out after falling a single time to a new trap.
@Darrisbob1: I didn't find it all that hard either. Though there were some instances where I wondered "is it really necessary to send armored med with sub machine guns after an unarmed, scantily clad (not that scant, but I mean..she isn't even wearing a jacket, lol) woman?" My only real gripe about the game was how short it was.
@potatojenkins: Yeah, Mirror's Edge was pretty frustrating for me, too. I loved the platforming parts, but any part that involved enemies was absurdly frustrating to me. It wanted me to believe it was suddenly an FPS, which is a difficult thing to swallow when I don't even have a gun. "Break through this wall of 15 men with submachine guns, all with a clear shot at you at all times and with you only being capable of absorbing 4 hits and armed with only your rudimentary kung fu!" Yeah, no. Bite me.
@Nowell: The main game itself isn't hard at all. But you start noticing the bad controls when you get into Time Trials and Speed runs. I've managed to get 3 stars on most time trials myself (mainly because I'm a trophy whore), but my throat is sore from cursing and my hands are sweating like crazy.
Don't get me wrong, I really love the game but it's far from perfect....
@Taiyz: I'm assuming they're faster than you because of their momentum. Watch a few videos on youtube and learn how to coil on certain jumps.
getting meteor smashed in ssbb, disconnection from all ea online titles, and Megaman 9 is just terrible in terms of that. Makes me throw controllers way too much
@Darrisbob1: I was waiting for this. I'm completely tired of seeing people complain about the game. I mean seriously, I've gone back and played a lot of the games I enjoyed as a kid and they consecutively kick my ass; I never had any issue with Mega Man 9, and literally cannot comprehend how people are finding it difficult. I mean sure, I still die on occasion, but the mechanics aren't that difficult to figure out after falling a single time to a new trap.
Smash Bros. Brawl - Getting stuck in someone's rapid-fwapping of the Paper Fan.
I usually don't get angry about video games... But when a friend pulled that cheap trick on me... I felt like almost throwing my damn controller at the damn TV. That's the closest I've ever got to doing it (but I didn't... and I never have).
Well I thought GTA took more adjustment, once you got it down it was still confusing as to why tapping the e-brake sends me spiraling into a death-spin. Braid was brutal, Home is annoying, but I'd put Ninja Gaiden 2 on the list. Fight a boss? Sure, fight him twice? Whatever. Fight him a second time, WITH TWO OF HIM?! That's just unbearable.
