You know what would be cool? Dual analog sticks that would click down into the system, much like SD cards click in and out of their slots.
Want to play? Click-click, click-click, ready to go! Want to throw your PSP2 into your pocket? Click-Click, Click-click, now you're ready to go to that meeting/class/Grandma Bonnie's funeral without the danger of the analog sticks busting off or getting caught on something.
It'll allow for slighty better "analog stick" feel than the current PSP nub, but without having to worry about breaking them off accidentally.
Sure, you'd have to give up L3 and R3, but it's a PSP! Who needs them.
I'm sort of curious as to why touchscreen is such a dreaded technology. The PSP as-is is kind of shitty.
I have one myself, but it doesn't really get much play, it's a really criminally under utilized system but... I can't help but think that touchscreen would make it a stronger system.
Oh snap! The gloves have come off! This is so exciting! I'm gonna go get the good dueling pistols! You know, the ones that I save for special occasions!
@NeoAkira: I was talking about multitouch, which is actually more expensive than the crappy touchscreen DS uses (and different internally)
Another analog doesn´t mean to make it more expensive (just a carcass redesign) and by internal hard drive it can be a flash memory one (like the one iPod shuffle has) and wouldn´t set the price a lot higher.
Stupid, baseless sarcasm is never good when trying to bash someone.
The iPhone totes having multi-touch and only costs $200 for the cheapest model and that's with current technology prices, so already you're driving off a cliff with your argument.
Having to change the current casing of the PSP for the next PSP as well as changing the motherboard for another input will cost you more. (maybe you don't know much about product design I don't know.)
So stupid, baseless replies is never good when trying to prove a point.
The Sony rep that comes into my store has said the PSP2 IS coming soon, but with not quite all of those features listed above. Will it be as crap as the other versions, who knows??
@BigDaddyTiny: sony lost money on the ps3 and is gaining it back, but the revisions for the psp have made them a LOT of money. another handheld should do the same as the revisions of the psp... why not do it?
@dojita: Sorry, I was referring to Sony as a whole company and taking the economy into consideration. Don't get me wrong, I love Sony but I think it's too soon to even to do R&D on another handheld that may lose some money in its initial release.
@NeoAkira: Every business has a different practice and agenda. If you're in a business where profits aren't satisfactory, you'd probably want to cut costs in some other department that's not making money and divert your time somewhere else. Like dojita said, put it in games rather than hardware. Researching doesn't take a whole lot of money, but it's really more time consuming. It's developing new prototypes that's going to cost money and may be a waste of time and money. Every real companies know what to do with their assets because of what they project their ROI (return on investment) is.
Their competition, Nintendo, is beating them with the DS Lite and they just released the DSi which drastically outsells the PSP every month (in Japan so far) and they've even said they don't consider the DSi the next iteration of the DS. Let's say during E3 Nintendo reveals a new DS (let's say the DS2). At this point Nintendo will be dominating the market with 2 handhelds already and a third coming.
And what will Sony have to show if they follow your perspective? Nothing. Not only would they have to rush to put together a new product but they would then have to, once again, compete with the crushing dominance of Nintendo handhelds.
Now I'm not saying I disagree that cutting R&D is useful for saving money and man-power, but it is just stupid from a competitive business standpoint.
@TheWon: damn straight, everyone here is crying about the lack of good games on the psp. But mine has every NES, SNES, GBA, GBC rom known to man, plus a few goodies that you normally could not get, like Secret of Mana 2 in English for the SNES. Not to mention it is absolutely sweet to be able to play old PSX games like FF7, Crono Cross, xenogears and Parasite eve on the go.
And I don't see how hacking hurts their bottom line, I own 4 PSP's. And every hacker I know has purchased multiple PSP's.
So please sony, let it be easily hackable, and don't put on a gay touch screen.
@Blazenhozen: Nice. Not only is it illogical to assume that hackers are going to purchase multiple PSPs (for what purpose? To what end? Did they break the first one? Or do they just not like saving money?) but you use gay as a slur. That's outstanding, you ubermenschen.
Brian, granted dual thumb sticks would be nice but will that really solve the PSP's problem? I can't believe that a vomiting of just about all PS1 and some PS2 games onto the platform solves the PSP's problems. Fact is those games weren't designed for hand-held but people would just shovel them onto the platform.
I'm not sure about multi-touch myself (though I'm not completely against the idea) and motion-sensing as adding those without direction would be indicative of the PSP's current problems. What Sony really needs to focus on is a device with strong connectivity with many hooks developers can tie into and that they (Sony) can effectively update with a clear road map.
I believe motion sensing is only a gimmick on a handheld--it's only service being to distract the user from the game. Dual analogs would be a godsend, because the majority of problems with a handheld game usually count the camera/controls among there number.
However, I agree with the touchscreen bit: it would be neat to have but I can do without.
I whole-heatedly disagree with your stance on accelerometers. After playing a great deal of iPhone games, I've come to realize that accelerometers can add just as much to handheld gameplay as a touch screen can. Granted that the accelerometer is utilized correctly and not tacked on as a gimmick.
Could I be the only one who doesnt want a PSP2 yet? i dont need two thumbsticks...and i definetly don't want a touchscreen... all i want is more games... and what is the big problem with UMDs? I kinda like them... it would be awesome if sony packaged umd versions of movies with all the Sony Blu-Rays
@Jasper Cohens Jr.: Would be a great idea, and no doubt wouldn't be too costly, what since for the price of a single Blu-Ray movie you can go and buy a whole DVD PLAYER.

Sony denies something and that instantly makes it true.

Touch Screen? Check!
Dual analog? Almost a guaranteed Check!
Internal Memory? Check!
Bluetooth? Check!
It's like they listed the most obvious choice to list down. Hmm let me see I'll make a prediction on the next PLaystation and Xbox.
Will have some sort of waggle? Yes!
Will have an HD more than 20gig? Yes!
Will have Blu-Ray as their media? Semi-yes!
See! I got this from "insider" sources too...

Obviously. That's why the DS and iPhone are such failures...oh wait

Dual analog and internal hard drive (but continuing with memory stick support) is the way to go.
01/27/09
Of course, the touchscreen will make it expensive. Just look at the astronomical price of the DS.
But another anolog and an internal hard drive will cost next to nothing.
/sarcasm
Gotta love posts like these.
