<![CDATA[ Sega Wants Some Of That Monster Hunter Money For Phantasy Star Portable ]]> When Sega announced Phantasy Star Portable for PSP, it seemed like a good fit. The PSP is doing extremely well for itself in Japan currently, and with Phantasy Star Online servers shutting down left and right, a move to a hot platform certainly can't hurt. With Monster Hunter Portable G 2nd for the PSP moving some 2 million copies in Japan, more group beast slaying and item finding over a wireless connection will almost certainly be welcomed by the Japanese gamer.

Unsurprisingly, when seeing the newly revealed artwork for Phantasy Star Portable, I was immediately reminded of Capcom's Monster Hunter; surely not an accident on Sega's part. Gone are the soft illustrations of the pointy-eared character cast from Phantasy Star Online and Phantasy Star Universe, replaced by big action, big dragons and big weapons. The logo? Similarly Monster Hunter-ish in its grittiness.

Probably a step in the right direction for Sega, but we wonder how many Monster Hunter devotees will judge Phantasy Star Portable a worthy purchase by its cover.

<![CDATA[ Phantasy Star Meets River City ]]> Shortly available on the Wii Virtual Console, two classic games from ages past about saving worlds and kicking ass. Girlfriends always be getting kidnapped, yo, and such is the case in River City Ransom (NES, 500 points), the beat-em-up RPG hybrid that sees Ryan off on a quest to rescue his girlfriend from the sinister Slick, with his friend Player Two Alex along for the ride. Then we have the game I was sincerely hoping for after last week's Euro update, Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom for the Sega Genesis (800 points). This time around it's a choose your own adventure of sorts, as you guide three generations via an innovative mate-picking mechanic that makes replaying the game nearly mandatory. Who you choose to marry decides who you'll be playing in the next generation, and ultimately which ending you'll receive when all is said and done. Love it or hate it, it's a damn fine piece of RPG history. If I had any time to actually play games this week, this would be the one. A very good week for the Virtual Console.

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO NEW CLASSIC GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

April 21, 2008

Helping out your friends is often as easy as a ride to the airport or a kind word of advice. But when they fall victim to dastardly kidnappers, things get a little more complicated. Step up and find out what it takes to rescue your imperiled pals in the latest additions to the Wii Shop Channel. Both of these classic titles feature distinctive rescue-driven storylines and villain-busting action to help bring out your inner hero. Isn't that what friends are for?

Nintendo adds new games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

River City Ransom (NES, 1-2 players, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older-Mild Suggestive Themes and Mild Violence, 500 Wii Points): River City Ransom takes place in River City, where our heroes, Alex and Ryan, find a letter on Ryan's locker from a guy named Slick. The letter says that Ryan's girlfriend, Cyndi, has been kidnapped, and Slick has taken River City hostage with the help of countless gangs and evil bosses. It's up to our heroes to save poor Cyndi and free River City from the clutches of Slick and his underlings. You can play as Alex and take on the challenge alone or battle with two players simultaneously as Alex and Ryan. Kick and punch to fight your way through gang members, evil bosses and other goons, or use a variety of weapons including a chain whip, brass knuckles and a tire, to name a few. Raise your stats by eating right, and gain new techniques by reading books. With your fighting prowess and never-ending spirit, the bad guys won't know what hit them.

Phantasy Star III Generations of Doom (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): As Rhys, the crown prince of the Orakian kingdom of Landen, you are engaged to be married to Maia, a woman from a rival kingdom. But Maia is kidnapped on your wedding day, setting you on a quest filled with twists and turns that will reintroduce you to people and places from previous Phantasy Star games. This epic spans several generations of characters, and your choices will dramatically impact the way the story unfolds, which makes it a great game to play all the way through more than once. In Phantasy Star III, things aren't always what they seem-check it out and watch the mysteries unfold.

<![CDATA[ Euro VC Gets Phantasy Star III ]]> psIIIgenerations.jpg A nifty little update for the European Wii Virtual Console comes in the form of Sega's Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom for the Genesis. Considered by many to be the weakest in the original Phantasy Star series, the game spans three generations of characters, with the player getting to decide how each plays out by making marriage decisions for the party members in each successive generation. Criticized for bland combat and a storyline that conflicts with Phantasy Star II, Phantasy Star III is the game most likely to cause knock-down, drag out fights among Phantasy Star fans, as those who love it love it to death and those who hate it hate it with a passion. Me? I enjoyed the hell out of it myself, despite its many problems, and consider it a fine addition to the Euro VC at 800 points. Hopefully this will make it to North America shortly.

<![CDATA[ Ninja Gaiden III, Phantasy Star II - Ninja Wins! ]]> More ninja goodness! First we discover that N+ is hitting Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday, and now the weekly Wii Virtual Console reveals the final chapter of the early life of everybody's favorite ninja, Ryu Hayabusa, will be hitting today. Did someone announce a sequel to Day of the Ninja without telling me? Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom for the NES (500 points) finds Ryu framed for the murder of FBI agent Irene Lew, clearing his name by stealthily killing many things. As if this wasn't enough, we're also getting the RPG classic Phantasy Star II for the Genesis (800 points), one of the greatest console games of all time. If I had any doubts that there's still some good stuff waiting in the wings for the Virtual Console, this week's update put them to rest. One of the best release weeks yet!

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO NEW CLASSIC GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

Feb. 18, 2008

Some gamers get skeptical when Roman numerals populate the title of a game. But make no mistake - this week's offerings are no mere sequels. They are some of the most highly regarded classic games around. So stock up on some Wii Points™ to battle the Dark Force or complete an action-packed trilogy.

Nintendo adds new games to the Wii™ Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Ninja Gaiden™ III: The Ancient Ship of Doom: (NES®, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Violence, 500 Wii Points): Join master ninja Ryu Hayabusa, last member of the famous Dragon Clan, in the third and final chapter of the legendary Ninja Gaiden saga. Ryu is framed for FBI agent Irene Lew's murder, and it's up to him to clear his name. Defeating superior life-forms created out of "life energy" called BIO-NOIDs and avoiding enemy ambushes are among the many obstacles which Ryu faces in this unpredictable adventure of mystery, deceit and destruction. Noticeable changes to the game-play mechanics include Ryu's ability to grab on to horizontal surfaces, his reduced falling speed and altered jumping maneuvers, and visible power-ups. Help Ryu defeat the forces of evil once more and discover the real culprit behind Irene's death as one of the most loved trilogies in video-game history comes to a close.

Phantasy Star™ II: (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Animated Violence, 800 Wii Points): Hailed as one of the greatest games of all time by fans and media alike, Phantasy Star II is an RPG that features an epic story line and turn-based battles. Play as Rolf, Nei, Rudo or several other characters as you navigate through the Algol star system battling the evil Dark Force. Build your characters, select the right weapons and armor, and take on the forces of evil through various missions as you find the right combination of characters to complete each objective. Experience the magic once again in this great sequel.

<![CDATA[ Another Phantasy Star Online Bites The Dust ]]> Ready your eulogies for yet another Phantasy Star Online going strictly offline, as Sega of Japan has readied the hammer and the nail for the Xbox version of the multiplayer action-RPG. Sega Direct—the online retail arm of Sega who is also due to get the ax—made the announcement this week that original Xbox game Phantasy Star Online Episodes I & II servers would shut down at the end of January. Get your cybering in now, before it's too late.

Oh, sure, we've suffered through multiple GameCube and Dreamcast games being put down by Sega, but it doesn't make it any easier. Actually, when PSO Episode III: CARD Revolution went down, I was pretty okay with that.

<![CDATA[ Phantasy Star Comes To PSP, Tragically ]]> The latest issue of Famitsu Weekly magazine reveals that Sega is planning to bring the Phantasy Star series—whose twenty year anniversary is just weeks away—to the PlayStation Portable. Now for the (potentially) bad news. Phantasy Star Portable won't be a classic return to form as Sega established with the original Sega Master System/Genesis titles. Instead, it will follow in the mold of Phantasy Star Universe, providing a single-player campaign and four player co-operative play over local wireless play. Yes, it's exactly the game you haven't been demanding.

*sigh* I'm putting my Mogic Cap back in the drawer again, waiting for a proper Phantasy Star V. Hell, I'll even take it on the Nintendo DS, Sega.

SEGA REVEALS DETAILS OF PHANTASY STAR UNIVERSE: AMBITION OF THE ILLUMINUS

Xbox 360 Expansion Pack for the Epic Sci-Fi Action RPG Soon to be Available for Download Via Xbox Live®

SAN FRANCISCO (October 25, 2007) - SEGA® of America, Inc. today released details for Phantasy Star™ Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, Playstation®2 computer entertainment system and for PC. Phantasy Star™ Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus is an expansion to the epic sci-fi action role-playing game, Phantasy Star Universe, and will be available on November 20, 2007. The Xbox Live download will be available for 1600 Microsoft Points/$20 USD and the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and PC versions will be available at retailers across North America for $39.95 USD.

Whether tackling quests online with a party of up to six adventurers, or fighting through the next chapters of the exciting online story missions from the original game, Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus enables gamers to experience the wonders of the Gurhal System through the eyes of a personalized avatar. The expansion pack allows gamers to experience an even richer and more varied Phantasy Star experience. Players will explore exciting new levels, such as the Ruins of Old Rozenom City and the subterranean Granigs Mines, where they will encounter new and more powerful enemy types and bosses, and master additional versatile class types.

The expansion further enriches the online Phantasy Star Universe experience with newly created and enhanced gameplay and customization features. Players can commune in new and expanded lobby areas filled with colorful decorations and music, including the new Casino Voloyal where roulette and slots can earn players special casino-only items. Character and weapon customization is even deeper with the introduction of new weapon types, armor, Photon Arts, and clothing. Also, each Guardian's individual Room is upgraded with far greater options for customization.

Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus continues the exciting single-player action-RPG storyline as a new Human Fundamentalist group, known as the Illuminus, disrupts the peaceful Gurhal System throwing the Gurhal Government into chaos. Using their custom-made Guardian, players embark upon a series of missions where they will meet familiar characters like Ethan Waber from Episode 1 and others including GUARDIAN instructor Laia Martinez from Episode 2.

Since its introduction in 1988, Phantasy Star has revolutionized the RPG genre by creating new standards through innovative gameplay, as well as being the first console RPG to offer an online experience in Phantasy Star Online. This new installment also expands the popular online adventure of its predecessor and continues the quest for peace in the Gurhal System.

Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus is rated "T" by the ESRB. For art and assets, please visit http://segapr.segaamerica.com. <![CDATA[ Phantasy Star Universe Ambitiously Expands ]]> Sega is expanding the Phantasy Star Universe... universe with Ambition of the Illuminus, an expansion pack due to hit this fall. The add-on will be released as a download for Xbox Live and as a standard retail product for the PlayStation 2 and PC.

It's the standard online expansion affair, new weapons, new areas, new armor, yadda yadda yadda. One of the more interesting additions are the new casino lobbies that allow players to gamble for rare and unique items. Sega is also adding to the game's single-player mode with the addition of new missions.

They also released nine new shots of Ambition of the Illuminus, which you can check out in our gallery. Anyone still go their Hunters License active? I haven't touched Phantasy Star since PSO for Dreamcast.

<![CDATA[ One Man's Descent Into Gaming Gender Bending ]]> A/S/L?Even though I'm a red-blooded male who has never once tried on mother's heels or my girlfriend's underthings, ten times out of ten, I'm going with the female avatar in a video game—if given the chance.

Why? Simple really. If I'm going to look at a character for ten to forty hours (or a hundred, as I did in Phantasy Star Online), it had better be something I'm fond of looking at. (It's not that uncommon for me to have spent 2 or more hours designing my perfect fake female. I'm picky!)

On the other hand, some friends of mine like to exploit the horny teens and lonely adults who will hit on anything with polygonal breasts. These friends always took advantage of the gender mystery, using their girly avatars to con armor, weapons and favors from men who go ga-ga over the possibility of finding an underwear model/WoW addict who prefers pot bellies.

This week's issue of the Escapist has a swell tale of author Bruce Sterling Woodcock's journey from sexy MUD cybering to learning about the online social interaction between men and men—when one of those men is a virtual woman. Also includes a warning about how sneaky e-ladies might see their veil lifted by changes in technology.

In the meantime, any other gender switchers out there?

<![CDATA[ PSU Beta Extended ]]>

The Phantasy Star Universe Beta has been tumultuous. First, it was announced. Then it was postponed. Then it came online... with the end date basically a couple days away. Then it turned out that the Beta fell right in the middle of the Xbox Live downtime. Leaving people with not much more than a 900 meg ISO on their hard drive.

Well, good news, at least. The PSU beta has thoughtfully been extended on account of all these difficulties. You've got until tomorrow, midnight PST to keep on playing. A good move by Sega, who seem to have experienced a string of bad luck with this beta.

Numerous Kotakuites have emailed us, informing that the Phantasy Star Universe demo is now up for download over Xbox Live. But....

No one can play it yet as the servers aren't up. Nice try Sega!!!

The download clocks in at 980 meg, with online multiplayer only, which shocks some of our readers, but we're not sure what they were expecting with an open beta of an MMORPG. These same readers seem to think 980 meg is tiny. Man, I'd love to have their pipe: you could drive a Caddy down it.

<![CDATA[ Phantasy Star Universe Open Beta This Weekend. Maybe. Who Cares Anymore? ]]>

First it's on. Then it's off. Now it's on again.

The Phantasy Star Universe Xbox 360 Open Beta will be uploaded to Xbox Live Marketplace this weekend, so get ready to download and play with your friends! In order to give more people the opportunity to enjoy this exclusive free beta, with extended uninterrupted weekend play, the multiplayer open beta will be available for download for two days only, and will be playable through to Oct. 18.

Me? I've stopped caring...

But wait a second. When it was announced to start on the 11th, it was scheduled only to go to the 18th. Now, it's scheduled to start on the 14ths and 15th, and it will still end on the 18th? Seems like a very short window to play if you've got to download a whole friggin' ISO to play.

<![CDATA[ PSU Open Beta Delayed ]]> Today's full of me looking like an idiot. First, I repost a video Eliza has posted on the same page. And while I wandered around, feeling like a sucker for that, I was made aware of the fact that the Phantasy Star Universe open beta I talked about yesterday has been delayed.

According to the official site:

We apologize, but the BETA release dates have changed. The release date will no longer be Oct 11th, but should see release very soon after. Please watch this page, as well as our Official Phantasy Star Universe forums for more information. Thank you for your patience, we look forward to seeing everyone online very soon!

So if you threw open your curtains and sang a song to the birds in rapturous anticipation of the PSU beta, Sega says suck it.

360 owners who want to take Phantasy Star Universe for a free demo spin will be in luck starting later this week week, when Sega will launch a free, open beta. Starting October 11th, players can download PSU directly through their Xbox Live Gold account and play the open beta until the 18th.

It's going to be a huge download though: the open beta will literally involve downloading the whole game. Possibly to cut down on the bandwidth, Sega is only allowing people to download the beta on the 11th and 12th.
