Man, here's a great idea...

A step counter that has a USB connector on it - plug it into your computer and every step would be an experience point - and you would have a character that you could level up.

This could be implemented into MMORPGs to promote people getting away from the computer.

Considering how crazy people get over "leveling up" we'd have a bunch of thin people in no time, right? Now...how to implement loot.

Anyway, I'm so glad I registered just to post this.

@MacDaddyWarsaw: Kotaku posted a piece a couple of months ago about the concept of a game where your character was only as fit as you were. So, you character would only be as agile, strong, etc as you are.

I think it's a good idea.

They had this at the Playdium in Missisauga a few years back, dunno if its still there. They hooked up a Hologram circle to Tekken 3.

Basically, you stood in this circle, and if you threw a punch, it made your guy on the screen throw a punch. If you ducked, you ducked. If you kicked, you kicked. Take a step forward to make your character walk forward, step back to step back.

Was kind of neat actually. Made my body hurt from flailing about afterwards.

@Theoutlet: Awesome. Remember reading about this when I was a kid. I think I owned that boxing game though. One of the few Genesis games I had before my system broke. It broke within the year I got it so I think I owned Sonic 2 and that game before it went out. Actually I had bad luck with Sega platforms. My gamegear broke right away too and wouldn't work with batteries, so I had to use an A/C adapter all the time, and then that plug got weird so if I moved wrong the game would shut off and I'd have to restart. Man, that sucked. No idea why my parents didn't get them fixed. They had to still be under warranty. At least I got a few amazing years out of my DC before the eye on it died.

@serotoninzero: Yeah, I only remembered the damn thing because I was such a sega kid. I think there was a pamphlet with a game I bought that talked about the activator and I wanted it really badly. However, I can easily see why parents didn't spend $150 on that.

I actually have my PS2 set up in front of a treadmill, which seems to work out just fine as is.

In fact, if I wishlisted anything, it'd be for "running controllers," (two handwraps with buttons) so that I could actually jog as opposed to walk.

call me crazy, but i can see this being kind of.. practical.

as i've grown older, i believe my game consumption has actually increased(!) while my circulation has grown poorer. a while ago during a Puzzle Pirates binge, my right ankle swelled considerably and i ended up with a cyst on top of my foot. today i sometimes look at my slothfulness while playing hours of Fallout or L4D and i think, "this is really bad."

i know i wouldn't mind a little more exercise, as long as the device is accurate. for that matter, it'd be cool if you could crouch and your character would follow suit (if the game allows for it of course). it'd suck for going prone, though.

@geekgrrl: You know, if you just want to get some circulation going with the least amount of effort buy yourself a $10 jump rope and just jump rope for about 10-15 min a day. It'd be better then nothing and you don't have to go anywhere.

@Theoutlet: it's not like i'm completely sedentary. i work out on a semi-regular basis. but damn, when you work a desk job for 10 hours, then go home to game on your PC.. the body tends not to be what it should.

My favorite is the old Pocket Pikachu. You shake it to "generate static" to power your up your Pikachu. Made spending quarters on the DDR machine even more satisfying.

Can I customize it to my liking?

Somehow, the idea of using it as the L/R in FFVII, which makes a character start the animation for trying to 'Run Away', brings ideas of hilarity to mind.

Like sitting on the couch with eyes glazed over pressing buttons until OMFG I CANT FUCKING FIGHT THAT!@1!!!! and frantically running circles around your living room hoping you get away.
