The set in this form is not available in the U.S. (although you can get the individual ones at the Nintendo World Store) and of course the signature makes it ultra rare. At the time of the writing of this article, there were six bids bring the price up to a reasonable $46 although the reserve has not been met yet. Princess Peach Gives Us The NPD Goods justpeachy.jpg

It's no surprise that Nintendo has been kicking ass and taking names over the past year with the Wii and the DS. As a matter of fact, the NPD numbers prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt. Well, this month's NPD Group numbers are no exception, seeing the Wii and DS as the number one selling systems in the U.S.

This time however, instead of sending out a static business email filled with numbers, Nintendo has enlisted their own Princess Peach to deliver the news. Cute and corny? Yes, but at least it's not dull and boring. More emails should be like this. Because let's face it, who wouldn't want to get a message from Peach?

Make the jump to read Peach's communique'!

Oh, my! All this attention is enough to make a girl blush!

As a princess I'm used to being adored, but this is just too much! I know I'm probably sounding like a broken record, but once again my friends at the NPD Group are telling me that Wii and Nintendo DS finished May as the most popular systems in the United States.

Thanks to everyone for your wonderful support! Nintendo couldn't have made it back to the top without you. You're all Mario-caliber heroes in my book.

Now I'm not one to brag, but some of the top games of this month happen to feature someone very pretty and popular - me! I'm talking about the super-fun Mario Party 8 and Super Paper Mario for Wii. Sure, Mario gets top billing, but from where I sit (on my throne), I'd say he's earned it. Besides, my own game on Nintendo DS, Super Princess Peach, is still selling strong, showing that a girl can do anything she puts her mind to.

I think all my Super Princess Peach fans would have just as much fun working to earn their Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree. I'm not in that one, but don't worry, I'm not going anywhere. Be sure to watch for me in my super-stylish soccer gear in Mario Strikers Charged, which arrives on Wii on July 30. I can't wait!

Kisses!

Familiar Nintendo faces become greedy, real-estate moguls along side some of the character of Square-Enix's Dragon Quest in Itadaki Street, a monopoly-like game from the DS coming out for the Japanese market in June.

Outside of regular Monopoly rules, players can also buy and sell stocks of an entire block of property (affecting their values), and there is also the option to level-up by collecting icons all over the board. Plus there are different boards like Castle of Torodaine, Death Volcano, Giant Demon's Statue and Yoshi's Island, so it's not like being in that Atlantic City Alcatraz for three hours waiting for some one to "JUST BUY BOARDWALK ALREADY SO WE CAN ALL GO HOME."

Peach: Emotional. Mario: Worried About Size.

Game site Serious Games Source (so serious, it has serious in the title) picks apart "the most politically incorrect Nintendo game ever," Super Princess Peach as well as the size queen aspect of New Super Mario Bros.:

I would like to mention that a few months after Super Princess Peach was released, Nintendo launched another Mario platform game for the Nintendo DS: New Super Mario Bros. This game featured new superpowers for Mario, too. Rather than using his emotions, Mario was able to shift sizes, from tiny to enormous. I never thought about this until I wrote this article but Nintendo's choice of female and male superpowers for both games in nothing short of hilarious. One game defines women as emotionally unstable while the other one presents boys as being obsessed with their size. Why is Mario so worried about how big he can be? Who is he trying to impress? Has Luigi been recently dating somebody? Are the mushrooms an aphrodisiac? What is Yoshi's gender? I always thought Yoshi was male but he lays eggs. As you can see, sex in the Mario world can be quite a complex topic. That is why Nintendo should try not to oversimplify it with stereotypes.

Eh... So this is "serious," huh?

The Misogynism of Super Princess Peach princesspeach.jpgPoor Princess Peach! Created by Nintendo's misogynist game designers to be the perpetual damsel in distress, even her first game outing is testament to feminine hysteria. While Mario can squish evil anthropomorphic mushrooms by bouncing on their heads, spit fireballs, jump around in a giant wind-up boot and even excrete a racoon's tail from his bottom and use it to fly, Princess Peach's powers are the same as all women's: the ability to weep uncontrollably or erupt into rage at the flimsiest of excuses. Is this blatant Nintendo chauvinism what Susan B. Anthony K.O.ed Hitler for?

On that note, Toybane has done a comparison between the original Japanese box art for Super Princess Peach on the Nintendo DS and its American counterpart. As it turns out, while the Japanese cover captures Princess Peach in the middle of a full-on episode of hysteria, the American box art is a lot less misogynistic, doing its damnedest to portray Peach as a bubblegum pink, Sigourney-Weaver-type heroine.

Princess Peach: One Moody Game midol.jpg

Is it just me or is it a tad misogynistic to finally unfetter the perpetual damsel in distress Princess Peach and make her a protagonist, only to arm her with a parasol and her mood swings?

I like Princess Peach, it's a great game, a throw-back to the side-scrolling, quasi-puzzler action of all the great Super Mario Bros. adventures, but why undermine the positive message with such an odd choice of "power ups?"

In the game you play as Princess Peach, finally not the damsel but the heroine, out to save Mario from the clutches of the princess-grabbing Bowser. Instead of outfitting the princess in some sort of clothes that would make it possible for her to, I don't know, walk five steps without falling on her face, they have her wearing a full ball gown and tiara. She also carries a parasol that she can thwack and poke enemies with. But her main weapon is her unstable personality.

The touch screen has pictures of four moods on it, when you touch one she gains an ability for a short period of time. Tap the angry face and things explode in fire around her. Tap the sad face and jets of tears sprout from her face. This may sound familiar to those of you who are in long-term relationships or married.

Despite the odd assortment of weapons, the game is actually quite a solid side-scroller created in the grand tradition of all the Mario brother games that have come before it.

The four power-ups (you can also be excited or happy) allow the game designers to come up with some interesting baddies and ways to get around them.

At first glance, Super Princess Peach may seem like a game for children, but play it for a few minutes and you'll come to realize that it's one of the better traditional Nintendo games to come down the pipe in some time. But it's disappointing that Nintendo finally turned Princess Peach into a heroine only to seemingly poke fun at womanhood.

Fortunately, less than stellar reviews of Black, the hyper-emasculation of Super Princess Peach, and my pledge to buy Exit next keep me from picking up any of this week's big games. Here are some of the notable releases that will close out February.

Black (PS2, Xbox)
Criterion's highly anticipated shooter that's garnered below-great scores shoots its way into retail. Will you still pick it up?

Super Princess Peach (DS)
Peach takes a leading role to save Mario and Luigi, armed with nothing but her umbrella and copious amounts of tears.

The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II (PC)
EA's second LOTR real time strategy game ships with new Elven and Dwarven races, plus a create-a-hero mode.

24: The Game (PS2)
Fans of Jack Bauer and creepy, zombie-like renders will surely snag this semi-real time, high-production-value action title.

Ys: The Ark of Napishtim (PSP)
The PSP port of last year's Ys for the PlayStation 2 adds more mini-games and more portability to the long running RPG series.

FIFA Street 2 (DS, Gamecube, PS2, PSP, Xbox)
Yo, yo! New locations, new tricks, new arcadey soccer action — it's FIFA Street 2, cuz.

Final Fight: Streetwise (PS2, Xbox)
"Gritty" update to the classic arcade beat-em-up. I'll leave it at that.

What are you getting this week? Let us know in the comments.

Nintendo's Princess Boot Camp Okay, this ad for Super Princess Peach is just too (squeal!) cute. Seriously, how can I, a man, in good conscience, possibly play SPP on the subway with all this girly nonsense? I visited the official site earlier today for this game and had to immediately put in Die Hard to make myself feel less femme.

I'm looking for a new DS game, but its just so freakin' pink! And you have to cry! There's no crying in video games!

Princess Peach Knock-Off Game

A female protagonist with an umbrella is on a mission to rescue her kidnapped friend. Nintendo's sure lax with those third party developers, because My Melody Dreamland has the exact same plot as Super Princess Peach. One major difference: this game is gonna stink.

In Reservoir Dogs, director Quentin Tarantino lays out his "Like a Virgin" theory. The Madonna song is about a girl that's knocked boots one too many times. Then she meets this one dude, and it's like her first time. Hence, like a virgin.

We're not talking about big dicks here. We're talking about having your blown and yer teeth kicked in. Every memory of playing Super Mario when I was seven years old came flooding back with Princess Peach. The excitement of discovery I found in those early Mario games has been matched. This time around, we're looking for a kidnapped Mario. The only question I have is why did Nintendo wait so damn long to give Peach her own game?

Maybe, we've become more enlightened. Maybe, the lines are blurring. When I was thirteen, I never would've picked up this game. It stars a girl, but she doesn't get naked. She gets emotional. She gets happy, cries, has fun and gets really pissed. (I told Luke that I would not mention "PMS" to which he responded: "Isn't it Yoshi's Island with boobs?") In the game's simplicity, there is complexity of emotions. I like that if I cry, I can make a plant grow. I like that getting pissed causes me to incinerate a bridge. I like that these emotions not only further game play but provide psychological insight.

Nintendo was smart enough to realize that this didn't have to be a 3D adventure. I've always been a side-scroll fan, and here it works and blatantly reminds players of early NES software. Nintendo's created the first truly post-modern game. It is commenting not only on Nintendo history, but the history of gender roles in gaming and even fairytales. It's always a hero saves the princess, and not the other way around. Mario saved Peach over and over again, not simply out of obligation, but out of his feelings for her. Now, the reverse is true in gaming's greatest love story.

We're not rescuing a woman in another machismo adventure. We're rescuing a man. (And not some weakling either.) Having Peach rescue the most powerful character in the universe says something about her status. Saving Yoshi (or Luigi) would be a slap in the face. There's a story that Tarantino asked Madonna directly if her song was about dicks. She replied, "No Quentin, it's about love." Same's true about Super Princess Peach.

Princess Peach Keeps Looking Better

Some new screens of the upcoming Nintendo DS Princess Peach title showed up at the British Gaming Blog and I can't get over how impressive its looking. Described at the blog as having the "ideas and feeling of Super Mario World but with an ambience of Kirby," if this game plays as good as it looks, Nintendo is going to have another winner for the DS.

Mario and Princess Peach Costumes pinupgirlclothing_Mario.jpg

A costume company is selling Mario and Princess Peach outfits. People can pretend that they pick the set up for Cosplay, but we know the only reason someone would buy them is to finally have a chance to eat the mushroom with a real live Princess Peach. Just make sure none of your buddies rustle up a Bowser costume.
