After finishing the first game, I was really hoping for melee weapons (like in the terrible DVD movie). But the more I think about it - unless they make Isaac a heck of a lot faster, I don't suppose they would fit very well with the gameplay.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to this one.

And I'm also a little surprised that they're deciding to keep Isaac as the protagonist.

Who here has seen Aliens? The version I saw at least, showed that Ripley had some serious psychological damage from the events of the first film with a Nightmare scene at the beginning. Yet in the movie she still managed to get her shit together (much better than most of the Trained Marines she was with) and kick some Arse.

I know how Issac was at the end of the first game, but there's nothing stopping him getting his shit back together to do the same. After all, as the end shows,
    **spoilers**

he had been in that state for the entire Game, and managed to survive through it!

Two issues I would like addressed in the sequel.

    1) More enemy variety. Seemed like there were just 3-4 different types of enemies in the first one.

    2) Dismemberment is awesome, but don't force it on me. When an enemy takes just 3 bullets to their weak zone to die or 25 shots to anywhere else, then you're not really giving me a choice. And I like choices.

    @AncientUnknown1:
    1) Didn't RE1 have a limited selection of enemies too? First time out maybe there should be some slack given here? For a sequel ya I think you're right more is good.

    2) Choice is good, but this may have been implemented purely to add challenge and over all fear to the game. I'll admit though when I spend more time finding ways to make one weapon a end all kill all weapon.... well it does get dull if I ignore the other weapons. Maybe a "what would kratos do?" philosophy would be apt for this.

I'm always wary of a game that includes 'plot twists' as a major selling point, particularly when it is a sequel to a game known for plot twists.
Hopefully it's just a sign of bad marketing and not bad plot.

What always amazes me about these kind of sequels is that in the first instalment, these protagonists have whatever awful thing that happens thrust upon them, and from there on in it's a fight to survive. 9 times out of 10 though, in the sequel they go looking for that very same thing. I never understood that logic in Aliens either. One minute Ripley was never going back there ever, ever, ever again, and then the next she's like "To heck with it, I have nothing else on".

(I've just realised that I've made Ripley sound like Mr. Monopoly)

    @plasticmouse:

if you are talking about Aliens (Second movie). It is her nightmare at the beginning of the movie that makes her reconsider and go back to face her fear.
It's less that she "has nothing else on" but more that she has just found out that her daughter daughter died age 66, two weeks after Ripley was revived from cryosleep.
Motherhood and defence of the child is the major theme in Aliens. once Ripley loses the ability to defend her own offspring, her nightmare makes her realise that she needs to help defend the colonist of LV-426. her only alternative is to spend the rest of her life in terror over when the aliens will reach Earth.

As long as there is a firm notion that the character who survives horror can continue and end that horror for good, it is believable. For further comparison I reccomend analysing history of American army soldiers who volunteered for the Pacific war after surviving in Europe.

Also please note, my update reads like I know all of this as fact. I realise it is just my interpretation.

@plasticmouse: That's because Ripley is having constant nightmares about the Aliens and can't live on without solving the problem. Hence the scene where she has the nightmare and immediately video phones Carter to ask if they're going to "wipe them out, not bring them back".

@plasticmouse: before I read your comment, I was thinking the exact same thing, but in a different way. Does it need to be Isaac? Can't it be someone else? It's not like the suit he wore was characteristically Isaac. Anyone can wear it. Also, I can see this series going the cliche route, where the fate of mankind rest in the hands of Isaac in all it's sequels, where it's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum, except he's all out of bubblegum.

@plasticmouse: I think that's a bit of an unfair comparison, really.

In Aliens I thought it was handled expetionally well. She was 'no way' until begged, realised she'd be forever having nightmares, found out her daughter had died of old age, that heavy firepower was being brought along, that she wanted to MAKE SURE they killed them off and not study them and of course, that the idiots had built a colony on the planet and families were in jeapordy.

Alot of factors there to sway her into something she didn't really want to do.

In games and alot of other sequels though, yes it is usually contrived and silly.

@Lemming: I actually love the Alien films (yes I even like the 4th one). But Burke always struck me as an exceptionally shady character. He was never in any way trustworthy. I think this is a big part of my problem with the script. Ripley never struck me as being daft enough to fall for a smarmy git like him in the first place. Were I in her position, it would take one hell of a lot more than what he says to convince me (and yes, I know it's just a film)!

"Wonder if Valve are, at the 11th hour, lending a helping hand, at least in terms of promotion?"
I think its could be more of a case that before the 11th hour Valve were being obstructive to its release. The do have HL:Source, a product that technically is competing with this free mod.
Of course I hope Valve wouldn't be doing that.

@Kicken: No I don't mean Valve jumped out the bush at the 11th hour to stop them, but hadn't given a blessing on the project up until recently. perhaps they halted the project for fear that when completed there work would be for naught if Valve stepped in to stop it.
Kinda how Left4Winchester just unravelled due to fear of litigation.

Fear of litigation... from Valve? Well, that would make no sense, as it's a mod for Left 4 Dead. And, well, that's what Valve wants.

More likely, fear of litigation from whoever owns the rights to Shawn of the Dead, correct?

Being that Valve supplies mod tools for each of it's products, I'm going to say that Valve is pretty chill with the bros when it comes to mods like this.

@deanbmmv: You need to own a copy of HL2 to play this game. This also doesn't violate the terms of service. Valve has no reason to drop a cease and desist, even if they did, it probably wouldn't be enforceable, what with the free use, etc.

    Not to mention fan backlash.

@deanbmmv: Valve knows about the project had only had one issue with it early in it's development. The mod was called "Black Mesa Source" and Valve asked them to drop "Source" in order to separate Valve products from the mod. Other than that, judging from past interviews, Valve seems excited to see what this team can do.

@Kicken: Yeah the left4winchester was fear of litigation from the Shaun of the dead folks. I was using it as an example where just the fear of legal threats could stall a project, not just waiting till you eventually get one.
I was mainly just suggesting fear of a cease n desist from Valve as a potential reason for it slowing down, it is possible, though Nezacant has suggested they actually have the full go ahead from Valve.
So I guess its just regular Valve time.

Actually, it is enforceable. You may not like it, but the mod tools are a service provided by Valve that Valve can take away at any time. As well, Black Mesa is in the Half Life universe, one of Valve's IPs, which they can also suspend the use of.

Will Valve? Nah, like I said, "Valve is pretty chill with the bros when it comes to mods".
