Or MS realized that PalTalk actually DID have a good chance of winning, and settled for far less than they would have won if this went all the way.

I guess 90 million isn't that big a deal for MS, but it sure is a big chunk of change.

PalTalk isn't just some patent-squatting company (though even if they were, that's completely legitimate as well). They are a tech company that happened to purchase technology and related patents that they were using in their business and that Microsoft most likely violated with something they did with Halo. Otherwise there probably wouldn't have been a suit and a settlement. That's the way things work.
For all the complaints that the US legal system is "fuckered" it's actually the best system around. Most companies would prefer to do business in the US as a result of our legal system, which generally protects companies interests well, manages to stop most spurious lawsuits and usually arrives at a just result. People that don't understand the legal system (like most of the people on this thread, for instance) have a knee-jerk reaction to seeing a lawsuit with a big payout and simply assume that it must be bogus for some reason, when in fact a settlement (especially from Microsoft) usually means that the plaintiff (PalTalk in this case) had a solid case.
