I'll probably have to go around and do some searching as which stores have the big clam shells on what, as the Wii points at the store I work at is the only one in that packaging while the Live and PSN cards are just left out as is.
The special 'Lost and Damned'-branded Microsoft points came in a jewel case that can only hold a frakking card-sized object. WTF?
At least the early Wii Points jewel cases could be reused for an actual disc. (It contained a disc-shaped point card. Clever!)
For MS points, it depends where you go. If you go to Rogers Video (in Canada), they come in clamshell packaging, but anywhere else and they come just like any other gift-card/itunes card, etc. Wii Points I've only ever seen in clamshell packaging, however.
And I've never actually seen PSN cards anywhere, ever.
You should see the packaging for the cards in the UK, the wii and 360 points cards are placed in DVD cases which instantly become useless, as once you have the code, there is no use for any of it, due to the fact that its actually a DVD case with no slot for your DVD, only a slot for the card istelf.
so unless you cant a gigantic case to hold a business card in, it just gets chucked, and probably contains more plastic then those cases shown.
@YoshiPictor:
That may be true for the 360 cards, I wouldn't know. But the Wii ones are actually normal DVD cases just with a bit of circular card in the slot and the actual points card attached to a manual. Still a little useless but spare DVD cases caren't completely worthless.
This should be pretty obvious considering that Sony did release a video / statement claiming "death to clamshell." I must admit that I'm pretty excited they're actually following through. Clamshell packaging sucks, and it's silly that it exists in the first place . . . especially for a gift card.
@okenny :) ...building bridges (to hide under): They're all easy to steal. Just the PS3 doesn't have any value until actually purchased, so you'll have to actually mug someone to get it. LOL
Wow talk about unfair there. The PSN and Wii cards are $20 while the XBL one is the $50 card. The 1600 point cards which are $20 are not packaged like that. It's just the card itself so it's even better than Sony's
@MooglesInMyFace: I don't know where you're shopping, possibly Walmart (they package all 360 cards by themselves), but pretty much everywhere all of the cards are packaged with plastic exteriors.
@TrIp13G: At several places including HMV and Walmart they sell point cards with just a regular card attached to some cardboard backing. I only see the clamshell now a days at Bestbuy and Gamestop. So no, the ones in the picture is not a fair comparison as all three have both types of packaging.
Blockbuster and Target have them sitting on racks life gift cards. It was just the card itself...But that said, I did notice that certain other places have them in clamshell. Perhaps the clamshell is a new thing. Or maybe the cards at blockbuster are old. Hell if I know
I believe Sony wins here for several reasons. First of all you don't need a combat knife to get it open and secondly you don't have to do conversions in your head to figure out what the card is worth.
Oh and it's good for the environment n' all that good stuff.
What a weird question, considering there is so little green on any of the packaging. If you hold a gun to my head I'm gonna say the Xbox Live packaging is the greenest and since when have we started speaking metaphysically for the planet and which packaging it would prefer in terms of aesthetics. I guess the one with the most packaging has the most "planet" in it, so once again the answer is Xbox Live packaging.
in the UK, Nintendo's packaging whilst initially wasteful, since there's a small card inside and a manual, becomes an empty DVD case which is pretty useful...

By game logic, then, Sony is obviously ripping off Apple. Obviously.
