Sci Fi's Top Ten Overrated Games Of 2008 May Offend |

He's way off on Burnout Paradise, that game is excellent. I didn't like the lack of crash mode and restarts either, but the game is pretty excellent. If you don't want to learn the city even a bit, then it may not be for you. Maybe I missed the hype train on Burnout though.
Spore ought to be #1 or at least top 3. That game was a let down of epic proportions.
MGS4 did get a really excessive amount of hype/pub, but I think it deserves all the good reception it gets. It's an excellent, yet flawed game. This guy has little to say other than trot out the tired old "watching a movie" line. Oh ho ho, you're clever, I'm glad you have a blog so we can read your insight. And it is probably for fans, but honestly, if you don't like Fellowship of the Ring, would you be interested in seeing Return of the King?
LBP, where's the game? Seriously? My dog could make a more thoughtful argument. At least level SOME legit criticism.
GTA IV shouldn't have been given 10s, but scores suck anyway honestly. Many people seem to be expecting GTA to not be GTA. This game plays so much like a better looking GTA III it's crazy. And I for one like that, I guess I wasn't expecting Rockstar to reinvent the wheel, as they haven't done yet. It's a bit easier to see why GTA IV is his #1 most overrated game when you see how much he loves Saints Row, however.
If you're going to write a list like this, try to bring some more reasoning to it.

How comes that every single games of his "most overrated of 2008" list could also be found in the "most popular games of 2008" list ? Coïncidence ? Yeah, sure.
If an overrated games is not necessarily good, it should not be necessarliy popular either. Except for this "clic on my blog" of a list, of course.
And yes, the "it's genious, but I'm surprised that everyone thinks the same" is plain stupid.

1. GTA IV - I love me some GTA same old same old.
overhyped... perhaps. Overrated - I think not
3. Braid - possibly one of the most loved game from hardcore gamer quarters for the year. Shouldn't a game that was loved by oldtimers and hardcore gamers, but hated other than that.. be called underrated?
5. ME - First, the game was released last year. Only the PC port came this year.. Second, its a Bioware RPG... need I say more?? One of the few games I still love starting up and lvling a new char for a bit
6. Wii fit - agreed, its a fad alright
7. Spore - I personally loved the content creation part of the game, and enjoyed the journey of many a species from single cell to galactic god. I think the only thing that sucked about the game was the Civ phase, it was made way too simple to be of any interest. But I guess we can agree it was overhyped and could not deliver the immense expectations it created
8. Burnout Paradise: The no restart criticism has already been beaten to death. It's like Spore/ME DRM issues. Can't we please get past that and see a genuine try to make a good game?
9. L4D - personally I'm not very big on FPS games, but this one is worth its weight in gold. Not had so much fun playing a FPS since the original UT & Q3
10. Civ IV Col - Could the game have been made better? Of course it could've. They could have included Portugal for starters. But, in times where RTS games are drying up, I think it was a welcome relief

It implies a pretty big amount of ignorance on the part of the user, because it assumes that that person's opinion is the one by which all games should be judged.
To say that a game is overrated is to say that there exists a concrete, 100% accurate opinion for that game, and anyone else's opinion can be judged as being above or below that concrete one. Of course, that magical opinion doesn't exist, it couldn't, because it's just that, an opinion.
Nothing is overrated, nothing is underrated, they're just rated. Whether the opinion of the masses matches up with yours or not is your own business, and to assume that your own opinion is the be-all and end-all is to be, in purely scientific terms, an elitist dickhead.

Both Brawl and Mirror's Edge received more "honest" reviews, where flaws were called out in significant portions of the article.

"What? It was my turn to do the top 10 opinion piece this week? Aww nuts, name me 10 recent, well received games. Quick..! Ok now I just need to write a title...top 10 games that I am too cool for...DONE! And a bit about why I don't like them...ah, I haven't played half of these, well, I'll call the Wii thing a fad, the MGS one an interactive film, and pretend to pour scorn on that adventures of stocking man game...DONE!"
Any journalist with anything more that five minutes on his hands could have done better.
I really hope that unknown actor and hack Tom Chick acts better than he writes.

Acting career
Tom Chick as Gordon in The West Wing
Chick's most successful television acting engagement was a recurring role as reporter Gordon in nine episodes of The West Wing. He also played Oscar's homosexual lover Gil in The Office, and Mario in The Nine.
[Guess not then. Here's to a short and unsuccessful career Mr Chick. :)]

But that doesn't mean they aren't good games...by any means. Just that they aren't the perfect works of art that they were made out to be.
If anything, people's responses to this article are a perfect example of why they're "overrated". If a game has reached a point where nobody is allowed to criticize it without being immediately dismissed as a troll, then that game has reached "overrated" status.
Because no game. Ever. Is perfect.

Burnout Paradise is overrated? Really? Moreso than Left4Dead? And asking where the game in LBP is? That is simply ignorant. No one has to like LBP, but if you can't recognize there's a platforming game there, you have to be either an idiot or have never played it.
12/10/08
For Instance: I agree these two examples are good games, but worthy of a higher score than another title?
1> GTA IV most overrated game in all history imho, the running, climbing, firing, and even the damn driving were clumsy as hell. Starting missions over from the point at which you pickup a car had me giving up on this after 3 hours of play. Rockstar does have one thing right, they can offend parents and congressional leaders like nobody's business, bringing criticism and the media/legal media legislative spotlight on the entirety of the industry.
9> Left 4 Dead I am pissed because this game cost $60. Anyone else recall the days when you would have gotten L4D for free with a full fledged single player title, complete with a campaign and its own multiplayer?
I think it is a fitting comment, especially considering games that try to innovate, such as Mirror's Edge, don't seem to get the love other titles do, which relates to lower metacritic scores, which for some god forsaken reason is how the industry gauges success.
12/10/08
Honestly, I play through a campaign once every couple of days. There's people I watch play that go through this stuff on Expert, which I think that if all you've ever played is on easy or normal, telek, you need to realize you're missing out on 3/4ths of the game. The strategy you use on an easier difficulty won't work on expert and depends highly on who you have as a team to survive the scenarios.
Would cutscenes have made everyone feel better about $60?

I can do it too! Halo 3 is over-rated and crappy!
12/10/08
What I agree, it was over-rated. Didnt stop it from selling like crazy and moving units (360s), not like littlebigplanet, that flopped on its sackboy face because gamers caught on to the fact that this guy (article's author) pointed out, there is no game.
12/10/08
How, pray tell, can you not see any "Game" value in a supposed "game" that allows you to build physics-based platforming levels that bend the mind in the most curious and imaginative ways possible?
Can we agree that Super Mario is a game? Everyone? Okay? Alright, and what do we do in super mario? Hop from platform to platform to get from point A to point B.
And little big planet? My gosh! The similarity! it astounds!
Also, do you even OWN the game? And have you played with multiple people? Try that and tell me there's no "game".
P.s. and if you have, and still find no "game", you have no soul. Good day to you.
12/10/08
You know you are a Sony fanboy when you think LittleBigPLanet is on the same level as Mario.
And i know exactly what you mean by "platforming levels that bend the mind":

12/10/08
Uh, no. No you can't. Which is why it's overrated. How Sony and Mm were dealing with particular issues in the Beta stage made the game desirable and on par with expectations. With all the censorship and infringement bullshit in the instances where there was none showed true colours and revealed the game's concept as overrated.
