@Trygle12 is back! Still has trouble reading his posts. ;_;: Hell if a version of L4D came out where when I blow off a zombie's head with mah rainbow shotgun, a unicorn burst outta his neck and runs off, I would probably pick it up....
"And games like World of Warcraft, Age of Conan, Warhammer Online and Pirates of the Burning Sea are all sold without classification. Something that the Interactive Entertainment Association of Australia doesn't believe is true. They claim that games without single player components don't need to be classified."
I was a little confused by the phrasing. So the IEAA refuses to classify MMOs and then the government refuses to sell unclassified games? The quote "doesn't believe its true" makes me think that the IEAA wants to classify MMO games but then the government wouldn't have a problem of sell unclassified games.
@Draconis: There's a difference between unclassified and unclassifiable. Manhunt 2 is Unclassified because it's so bad and so gory they can't even grant it a rating. This bans it from Australian stores.
A game like World of Warcraft is unclassifiable, which means because it's entirely online and online can't be judged in a rating system (thus, that little Experience May Change During Online Play warning you get on most games) then World of Warcraft does not belong in the system at all and can't be prosecuted according to it.
I had no idea Australia's government was this over protective! What is up with that?
I used to play Final Fantasy XI with some Aussies when I lived in Japan. Great group of guys. Can't believe they're all thieves and pirates! The scum...
@KamikazeSailor: The Australian government is extremely controlling on a number of issues. They have some of the strictest gun control laws in the world, to the point where even "airsoft" guns and non-functional replicas have extremely tight restrictions. They have virtual lockdowns on all forms of internet pornography above basic nudity. They are extremely restrictive of video games with any sort of gun violence, nudity, or "coarse language" and games are frequently banned there that in the US, would get an M rating.
The Australian government is extremely proactive about censoring and banning materials they consider obscene or violent. Many Australians import their games, otherwise they can't get them.
I hope the law sticks, and that they soon enforce it all around the world. MMO's are absolutely good for NOTHING, aside from addicting our kids and removing them from the real world and the experiences therein. I honestly think, and hope, MMO's are one day shutdown.
@Ranzell: MMOs will never be shutdown. It is like telling someone to not smoke or drink. People want to spend their time however it is they want to. You're basically on the side of wanting government to babysit you and your relatives. Either way, I'm glad it isn't applicable where I live, hopefully "you" can find a country where you can be babysit by it.

@Deadshot: mmorpgs are terrible, anyone who says otherwise should be shot, honestly. They are, without a shadow of a doubt, good for nothing. Go have fun any other way but please, save yourself your sanity and your freetime and do not ever play an mmo.
@ Aye Mak,
Really? If you get addicted to any game you're pretty retarded? Well, in that case near half the people that play WoW should be riding the short bus, although it's likely they already are.
@ Deadshot
You say that why, because I think MMO's are the most useless peice of crap ever to grace the world? You honestly hope MMO's are never taken off the market? Why? Because they do so much for society and help people and generate income for starving kids in africa? I forgot, MMO's helped the victims of Katrina right? Oh wait, no, MMO's didn't do shit and they never will.
@Ranzell: hmmm you know, that kinda sounds a lot like video games in general. wait, you do realize this is a gaming blog, right....? dude, you cant dictate what people take joy in. and if you are really so narrow minded to think that passing a law outlawing them is a GOOD thing, you have some serious fucking issues. get yer head out of yer ass, do some growing up, and realize that one opinion does not rule this world. sorry to hear you dont enjoy the MMO market, but a lot of people do. i cant stand the fact that people actually listen to country music, but does that mean i think there should be laws against it?
@uppitycracker: What you don't seem to understand, what perhaps you need to do some growing up over, realize and pull yer head out of yer ass to see is that mmorpgs are not now will they never be a good thing for society. They DO addict kids and that addiction turns said kids into unproductive, unmotivated and all around useless members of society.
This is not like console videogames that have a definitive end point, and so it's much harder to get addicited. More so, it's unlike console games in that you're not under the illusion that bettering yourself ingame with equips and levels is bettering yourself in real life.
I will now and forever stand by my view on mmorpgs, and that's with some serious thinking. But like everyones said, its my opinion. Go have your own opinion about it if you don't enjoy mine. I'll listen, but I won't change my stance, just at seemingly everyone who's replied won't change theirs.
@Ranzell: I wish you wasted more time in MMO's instead of wasting our time with your parent-state nonsense and your broad-strokes-painting hate mongering.
@Ranzell: That's great and all, but you know, I can think of quite a few other things that are perfectly legal worldwide that do nothing but bad things for our society as a whole. Yet you single out MMO's? And it's pretty absurd to think that EVERY SINGLE PERSON automatically has their life ruined as a result. You gotta realize, sooner or later, that blaming certain activities or whatever for a persons actions and lack of motivation is just enabling them to continue down a path of irresponsibility, where they'll never have to own up to a fuckin thing in their pitiful lives. The more you help these people find excuses for their own behavior, the worse this kinda hype will get, and the more restricted you'll find things becoming. Yeah, okay, MMO's have an ability to drain someones social and professional lifestyle. So does COD4. The multiplayer has no end there. So now what? Console games are no better, so long as they have multiplayer capability? What's next? When does the finger pointing end and people finally start taking responsibility for their own actions? By your rationale, never.
But hey, you stated the fact that you don't plan on changing your opinion anytime soon. I can see the attempt at logic here, don't get me wrong, but the bottom line is you're not doing a damn thing for these people by restricting them. They'll just find some other outlet for their self destruction.
@Ranzell: oh god ranzell help me im playing wow right now OH GOD I COULD BE BUILDING HOMES FOR STARVING AFRICAN CHILDREN IF ONLY I WERENT ADDICTED TO THIS ADDICTIVE MMORPG AND HAD THE FORTITUDE OF SOMEONE SUCH AS YOURSELF
@Ranzell: Pretty dangerous way of thinking. To shoot someone for disagreeing with you.
I'm lost on how you say "your wrong" though. As I said, MMOs will never be shut down for the fact that people more or less demand to play them and continue to pay for them, or buy items in those worlds to enjoy spending time on. Where there is a demand, there'll be a supplier to fill that need, that is why drugs and such still exist in this world.
MMOs obviously give some jobs to people or help others meet each other to build socializing skill; hell some even gain skills to manage a group of misfits into doing something productive for their day job.
People who want to kill time enjoying an MMO will do, and I don't see why you believe they shouldnt just because you say so.
Just because they addict kids, doesn't mean that others shouldn't be allowed to enjoy it. How about finding out why kids (perhaps yours) are addicted to them?
If all these kids are now unproductive to society, then why hasn't the world collapsed yet? I'd argue that many of these kids are now part of society working to gain money to enjoy these hobbies of theirs, instead of sitting on their ass as you claim they do.
It is a shame you have a narrow minded opinion though, especially from your solution of wanting to shoot someone for disagreeing with you.
Oh btw, for console games, many will push for unending styles to keep people from trading in too early or to gain more with DLC and such, so I think you may have to stick to old games from now on if you wish to avoid such "unending gameplay."
@uppitycracker: The article is about MMO's, right? It was last I checked. If it was about drug addicts and their dealers I'd post in a very similar vain. I'm singling out MMO's because that's exactly what the article is about.
I don't remeber saying every single person has their life ruined, and I know that's not the case. What I do think is that it's a problem, and it's getting much worse in this technological world we live in. How can you expect the people that do become addicted to these things to ever take responsibility when new, more exciting outlets for their lifestyle are constantly released? You think these people will just find another outlet for their self destruction, but in letting them continue doing what they're doing at this point is just as bad, if not worse, because you're not giving them a chance to change.
@Ranzell: I'm not the one screaming about contributing to society. I'm chilling out at home making toast (For myself, not for people without toast - Actually I don't have toast right now so I am making it for someone without toast) and I'm okay with that! Maybe you should learn to be okay with doing something that isn't directly saving the world once in a while?
@Aye Mak Sicur: Why would you ever want to be okay with doing something that isn't saving the world? If you have the ability to save the world, which you seem to imply we all do(something I happen to agree with), you'd have to be a lazy asshole NOT to act on it.
@Ranzell: You're not building me a house. A mans worth to society can only be measured in the number of houses he has built minus the number of elves he has slain.
@A Pimp Named DaveR: This is the Australian Police! STFU and GTFO or we WILL open fire! Any attempt to pop your cooldowns or rez will draw aggro! Disable your Omen, place your epics on the ground, and put your hands in the air! Anything you say can and will be taken as a violation of your EULA!

@Koztah: Don't try to find logic in this. I'd love to speak to someone in charge of this kind of thing and ask them why it's the way it is. Their head would probably explode from going around in circles so much.

Valve should replace everything with rainbows and unicorns when a zombie dies or kills someone.
If it still doesn't pass (which I'm sure it won't) then people can proclaim "RAINBOWS AND UNICORN GAME DENIED RELEASE " and not technically lie.
Make it optional though :P

Seeing as the majority of MMOs can be bought through digital distribution, and in most cases the purchaser is using a credit card anyway...
What exactly is this going to help? Less money flowing in Australia's economy, and more flowing out of country!
