Star Ocean 4, Infinite Undiscovery Trailers

Tonight's Microsoft Japan RPG press event wasn't all about announcements. There were videos, too! Here's two of them. Above, a trailer for Squeenix & Tri-Ace's Star Ocean 4, helpfully (and relatively tastefully) dubbed in English for all us English-speaking sorts. After the jump, an Infinite Undiscovery clip that takes the old trailer, keeps the cheese and throws in a few new scenes to try and hold your attention. More »

LotRO Reaches The Ocean

The latest chapter in the ever-expanding Lord of the Rings Online introduces Forochel, a new region which lies in the far, frozen north of Eriador, which gives players their very first chance to see the ocean in the game. It's funny how you don't notice such a thing missing until it's pointed out to you. Along with giant patches of water, Book 13: Doom of the Last-king promises new cold-based terrain effects. What that means exactly I have no idea. Perhaps slippery patches of ice? It's about time for an MMO to introduce slippery patches of ice. Failing that, some really well-crafted fjords. Turbine promises more info on the next free expansion shortly. For now, it's LotRO on ice! More »

Other Ocean Working on Iphone Monkey Ball Demo

I was pretty wowed by the Apple presentation of Super Monkey Ball on the iPhone last month. The use of the tilt controls for this game in particular seem really intuitive. So any news about it, and games like iPhone Spore, make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Today Other Ocean announced that they are working with Sega to develop a demo version of the iPhone game.

"We were tremendously honored to be asked to work on the demo version of Super Monkey Ball and also to participate in the actual unveiling," said Ayre.

"Apple's SDK is extremely developer-friendly and the iPhone, with its accelerometer, is the perfect platform for Super Monkey Ball," explained Gordon Wood, Other Ocean's Technical Director and Senior Programmer. "The iPhone is going to be a major player in the handheld gaming market, and we're excited to be among the first to develop games for the device."

"We knew Super Monkey Ball could be a perfect game for the iPhone, and all we needed was the right team to partner with to make it happen," said David Cobb, Sega's Vice President of Product Development. "Other Ocean was the obvious choice to build the demo version, with their experience giving us a clear advantage."

I don't know if the iPhone is going to be a major gaming device, but it sure as heck seems to be a better platform for gaming than a regular phone. Now when is that demo coming out?

Star Ocean 4 Is Coming To... (Dunno!)

Square Enix still isn't revealing which platform tri-Ace's upcoming RPG will appear on. (Hey, maybe they don't know yet!) In the new issue of Famitsu the game's platform is listed as TBA. Other new info? Star Ocean 4 is actually a prequel, and the developer originally wanted to call the game Star Ocean 0. Apparently, players will also have a party, and the game's battle system will be similar to past titles. tri-Ace is considering networked functionality, but nothing's set in stone so far. No release date, either.

Star Ocean: Second Evolution Debut Trailer

The PSP has been very, very good to fans of Japanese RPGs new and old. At this point if you are a JRPG fan and don't own a PSP you are missing out on an amazing crop of games. This is the debut trailer for Star Ocean: Second Evolution, the PSP remake of Star Ocean: The Second Story for the PS1, due out April 2nd in Japan. It features tons of new voice work, artwork, and some lovely fully animated cutscenes, as you can plainly see here. I want, badly. I played enough of the original that an import might be in order. I'm sure Ashcraft won't mind me bugging him constantly for translation help. He lives for that sort of thing.

Nintendo and Norwegian Cruise Line Team Up for Endless Ocean Cruise Giveaway

What could be better than playing Endless Ocean on your Wii at home? Why, playing Endless Ocean on a Wii whilst on a cruise of course! From now until Feb. 29, Nintendo and Norwegian Cruise Line are hosting a sweepstakes wherein three lucky winners will receive a seven day Caribbean cruise. While on the cruise, the winners will be supplied with a Wii and some games to play to pass the time. Interested parties can sign up for the sweepstakes on the official site with winners being announced around March 5th. Complete rules can be found here.

Sounds like a pretty sweet prize, I just hope that whoever wins this thing will actually go out and do some actual snorkeling between bouts of Endless Ocean. Otherwise it would just be kind of sad.

'Hardcore Review of Softcore Games'

I'm not sure what's up with the porn terminology, but taking off on the recent talk about diverging groups of connoisseur game reviewers and the hoi polloi, Tale of Tales takes off on a rant about Eurogamer's review of Endless Ocean. Saying there's a desperate need for a 'non-hardcore games press,' there's plenty of criticism leveled at the rest of us. I'd agree that game reviewing could be improved in a number of areas, but I think this might be taking things a bit too far: More »

Star Ocean 4 Shows Off Its CG

Direct from Square Enix's 2008 Jump Festa and GEMAGA.com, this is the trailer for Square Enix's Star Ocean 4, displaying some pretty impressive CG, and really nothing else. There are stars, and I am pretty sure I spied an ocean down there. Who knew Square Enix could create such stunning CG? What, everybody? Oh. It's true that Squenix CG trailers are a dime a dozen these days while gameplay clips of their big RPGs are few and far between. All they really tell us is that the company believes in the game enough to invest the time and money on creating a short teaser. Still, I do love me some Star Ocean!

Star Ocean Sails Special Edition PSP

Square Enix is there whenever you need sequels or branded goods, and this time the company is back with Star Ocean: First Departure and a Star Ocean branded PSP Slim & Lite. Both will be bundled in a special First Departure Eternal Edition pack on sale December 27th for ¥24,849 ($216). Sure, it's gonna sell big an all, but what we really like is the PSP pouch. It looks like a space blanket! That, after the jump.

DS Motion Sensor In the Flesh

Earlier this month, Nintendo's Magkid went on sale in Japan. The game features a motion sensing dongle that connects via the DS's GBA slot. Tech site Digital World Tokyo has a few pics up of the motion sensing add-on. Along with that Face Training DS camera, loads of interesting little first-party peripherals are coming out for the DS. Wonder if this are a one-off deal or if Nintendo plans on making more games for these thingies...

Forever Blue "Gameplay" And Lots Of It

If you haven't quite wrapped your noodle around what Arika's Forever Blue for the Wii is yet, this extended gameplay clip might shed some light. As you can see, it's all in Japanese, as the Western version (Endless Ocean) won't be released for months. Despite it's high Famitsu rating, I have a hard time believing this is going to be a purchase for me personally.

Famitsu Loves The Krill Out Of Forever Blue

Arika's Forever Blue for the Wii may not look like much of "game" but the "reviewers" at weekly Japanese gaming pub Famitsu were big, big fans. The four editors apparently had a whale of a time/paycheck with the SCUBA adventure, giving the game scores of 10, 8, 9, and 8, deeming it not quite as good as The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass but two points better than Saints Row. Endless Ocean, A Romantic Undersea Adventure

The very definition of non-game, Endless Ocean—also known as Forever Blue in Japan—will immerse Wii owners in a world of fish, undersea mammals, and saltwater. Similar to Arika's previous undersea adventures, the Everblue series, you'll experience relaxing SCUBA-filled gameplay as you look for treasure, take photos and frantically rub dolphins. There's also an intense deathmatch mode involving a speargun and a bazooka that launches carnivorous fish. Alright, I made that last part up.

This clip shows the three commercials currently running in Japan for the Wii release—no deathmatch footage. I'm sure it will sell trillions.

Square Offers Tasty Pre-Party Morsels

Today in Tokyo, Square-Enix held a warm-up for its Final Fantasy Party. A slew of titles were announced, including Chocobo's Dungeon: Toki-Wasure no Meikyuu and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers for the Wii. Remake-wise, there's Star Ocean 1 and Star Ocean 2 for the PSP. A new Star Ocean game was also announced for an undecided platform. This August, the DS will see Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates. Showing that the PS2 is not quite yet dead, Final Fantasy XII: International Zodiac Job System is schedule for an August release. The biggest news of the presser? Square-Enix will be making its first simultaneous release with RPG The Last Remnant for the Xbox 360 and the PS3. That game has yet to be dated. More »

Reggie: Smaller, Cheaper, Easier Are The Road To Riches

Nintendo boss Reggie Fils-Aime writes in a new CNet Perspective editorial that if technology companies want to find new avenues for profit, they should focus less on old ways of thinking and look to creating products that are smaller, cheaper and easier to use. He says, quite simply, the "next generation of R&D should balance what's under the hood with what users want to hold in their hands." More »

Morons Weigh In On Why Wii Activity Is Bad For You

Normally, the mainstream media can't say enough nice things about the Wii. From giving old folks one more reason to crawl out of bed for the 30,000th time to fostering family gameplay to getting portly youth off their cellulite ridden asses, the media is all about Nintendo's Blue Ocean strategy.
