Sooprise, sooprise, "households with kids ages 6-12 represent the 'sweet spot' for these products," writes Nielsen on its blog. Also, these households tend to be wealthier, with incomes above $70,000. But lest you think this is strictly a suburban whitebread consumer template, Hispanics and Asians were most likely, among ethnicities, to pick up this type of game, too.

What is interesting to me is the console breakdown of video game movie buyers. The PlayStation 3 is the clear leader, followed by the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360. The Wii? A distant fourth.

This is probably attributable to the first three consoles outnumbering the Wii for development of video game adaptations. But as Nielsen started this by painting the picture of a comfortable, dual-income family with kids younger than 12 in the house, and with most major film adaptations going to all consoles, the Wii turning up so low is kind of a surprise.

<![CDATA[NPD Says Half of All Americans are Gamers]]> There's probably a lot of solitaire and online bridge-playing padding that, but a new NPD report says 170 million Americans play video games. The U.S. population is 304 million.

The result is inside NPD's 2009 Gamer Segmentation Report, and is based on a January survey of nearly 21,000 people. NPD breaks the population down into seven segments, the largest being Secondary Gamers, at 33.6 million. These are mostly female gamers who play less than four hours a week, none of it on a console.

Console gamers, mostly male, are the next largest and fastest-growing segment, at 32.9 million. Then comes Heavy Portable Gamers, heavy describing the amount of play, not their weight. Which is a good thing, most of their 30 million are kids. (Their average age is 19. Ni-ni-ni-ni-nineteen.)

GameSpot broke down the report further. But you get the idea. Video games are everywhere - even someone who doesn't consider himself or herself a gamer, but plays a flash game at work, is a gamer for purposes of this study. So, yay us.

<![CDATA[Online Gaming Up 22 Percent as Console Revenue Down 23 Percent]]> ComScore's data by itself suggests that gamers are seeking cheap, if not free, online games in greater numbers. Compared to other metrics, does it mean movement away from consoles?

VentureBeat reports the figures, which show online gaming posting a 22 percent year-over-year boost in players from May 2008 to May 2009. Coincidentally, the number fits with a 23 percent slide in console game revenues (attributed to NPD), and the 20 percent reduction in console game sales some analysts expect for the second quarter of this year.

Yahoo! Games and EA Online continue to be the heavyweights in this space, with more than 19 and 17 million unique visitors, respectively. EA's total is up 34 percent from a year ago. But large brands like Disney Games and MSN Games also saw declines in unique visits. ComScore's director for gaming also notes that online games are growing at 10 times the rate of the overall U.S. Internet population. There's a handy chart at the link.

<![CDATA[Pachter: Used Games Sales At 100 Million Annually In U.S., Not A Threat]]> Gaming's most-quoted financial analyst shared some unconventional wisdom about used games today.

In a 210-page annual report about the state of the gaming industry that begins with him thanking Kotaku and other websites for "keeping us on our toes and always asking us to think about the industry in real-time," Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter sized up the used games industry.

And then Pachter argued why used games aren't the danger game publishers suspect them to be.

On the size of the phenomenon, he stated:

The number of games traded annually is striking; we estimate the overall used game market to be $2 billion in the U.S., with an average ticket of around $20 per used game. This means that an estimated 100 million units of used games are traded in each year, representing around 1/3 of all games sold annually.

A third — or a quarter if the 270-million games sold annually in the U.S. also cited by Pachter doesn't include used games — of games sold annually in the U.S. are used? That is a striking figure, either way you look at it. Kotaku contacted GameStop and the game sales-tracking NPD group for corroboration, but neither replied by press time. The $2 billion figure was reported earlier this year by the Wall Street Journal, citing another analyst.

If that market is so big, why shouldn't publishers, who derive no profits from the sale of used games, be shaken by it?

His analysis:

we think that used game sales benefit new game sales by providing currency to gamers with less disposable income, thereby enabling the purchase of additional games. The vast majority of used games are not traded in until the original new game purchaser has finished playing, typically well beyond the window for a fullretail priced new game sale. Thus, while there may be some limited substitution of used game purchases when GameStop employees "push" used merchandise upon consumers lined up to buy new games, the vast majority of used game purchases occur more than two months after a new game is released. Other than the potential impact at holiday (when new game lives are extended beyond the typical two month sell-through pattern), used game sales just don't impact new game purchases very much…. To the extent that there is a substitution effect, we estimate that fewer than 5% of new game sales are impacted

Pachter's analysis echoes what GameStop reps have told me about a view of the sale of used games furthering the purchase of new games, rather than cutting into such sales. As Pachter notes, many publishers have been acting as if the threat is real, bundling their games with map-pack codes and other add-ons that add value for the first purchasers of a given game disc.

Pachter argues that the ability for gamers to sell their newly-bought games back to GameStop and other retailers for store credit is one of the factors limiting consumer interest in downloadable games. Used games keep them coming into stores and keep the trafficking in new game purchases. Consumers, he writes, perceive less value in the purchase of a digital game that they can never sell back.

<![CDATA[Sony: The PlayStation 3 Pushes More Blockbusters]]> Sony contends that the PlayStation 3 maintains a higher attach rate for blockbuster games than the Xbox 360, and has the numbers to back up the claim.

Information delivered to Gamasutra in preparation for an interview with Sony's Peter Dille included several examples of the how blockbuster titles sell nearly as many or more copies on the PlayStation 3 than on the Xbox 360. Take the example of Street Fighter IV. Sony says that Capcom's eagerly-anticipated sequel has only sold around 44,000 copies more on the Xbox 360 than the PlayStation 3, with a much higher overall attach rate. 402,919 copies of the game sold represents a 5.5% game to console percentage for the PS3, while the Xbox 360's 446,435 units only represents 3.1% of consoles in North America.

Tomb Raider: Underworld represents the biggest triumph cited by Sony in terms of sales numbers, with the PlayStation 3 version outselling the 360 136,245 to 108,784, though with numbers that low I wouldn't exactly be calling Underworld a blockbuster title.

Other examples provided include Ubisoft's Prince of Persia and Grand Theft Auto 4, both of while have sold more copies on the Xbox 360, but maintain a higher attach rate on the PS3.

In case those numbers weren't enough, Sony also takes the opportunity to challenge Microsoft's response to the February NPD results, in which they boasted 130 games rated 80 or above on Metacritic, pointing out that while in sheer size the number is impressive, as of April Sony has a larger percentage of games scoring over 80%, with 31% of their games scoring in the upper reaches as compared to Microsoft's 23%.

Sony also notes that the majority of the 360's 80%+ scores are for games published in 2006 and 2007, "when the console had little to no competition".

It's all a matter of twisting and turning numbers around to make them look better. Which numbers look better to you?

<![CDATA[Funcom Loses Big, Chief Financial Officer Bails]]> The Age of Conan has been rather rough on Funcom, whose fourth quarter financials reveal an operating loss of $23.3 million, possibly prompting the departure of chief financial officer Olav Sandnes.

Funcom's latest massively multiplayer online game Age of Conan is to blame for the company's huge deficit, with $22.8 million depreciating in the face of the game's poor performance. The bad financial news was compounded by the announcement of CFO Olav Sandnes's departure.

"Funcom is a company with a substantial potential based on a unique combination of skill sets in a fast growing global market. I wish Trond Aas and the rest of the organization all the best in realizing the full potential of the company," commented Sandnes.

Despite the operating loss, revenues were up for the fourth quarter, with subscription fees from Age of Conan raising them to $8.7 million over last year's $1.2 million.

In layman's terms, Funcom gained money from subscription fees, but lost money actually operating the game. This is reflected in the closure of over half of the game's servers last year. The company basically spent too much to make that $8.7 million.

Still Age of Conan soldiers on, despite estimates the the subscriber levels for the game are below the 100,000 mark. There's still hope, as Funcom has recently announced launch plans for the game in Poland and Russia, two countries where Conan remains immensely popular. We'll be keeping our fingers crossed.

<![CDATA[Not So Fast Gaming, DVD Still Pwns You]]> As Luke pointed out early this morning, the report that U.S. games sales had surpassed DVD sales was bound to be misconstrued. And it was. In fact it's just plain wrong.

The folks over at Entertainment Merchants Association wrote to let us know that the $18 billion for "game sales" includes software, hardware and even accessories. While the DVD sales include, you got it, only the DVDs. The actual apples-to-apples comparison has DVD sales at $16 billion and video game sales clocking in at a meekly $8.64 billion. Even if you add that $503 million in sales the industry is no where near toppling DVD sales from its mighty high roost.

One day video games will be bigger business than music and hollywood, mark my words, but that day hasn't come yet.

<![CDATA[Age Of Conan - A Million Shipped, 700K Registered]]> We often talk about the differences between 'sold' and 'shipped' announcements, generally coming to the conclusion that the numbers would be relatively close, but sometimes the gap can be a bit bigger. Early this month, Funcom announced that Age of Conan was about to pass the one million copies shipped mark, which is a lovely milestone to reach and all, but in their latest pat on the back press release they place the number of accounts at "more than 700,000". This means that somewhere between 25-30% of those shipped copies either a) haven't been purchased or b) have been purchased and haven't been activated.

While 700K is nothing to sneeze at, it's still a great deal less than a million. Just something to ponder the next time you see one of those snazzy shipping number press releases. Speaking of press releases, hit the jump for Funcom and Eidos loving on some sales charts.

Age of Conan continues to dominate retail charts

- The best selling PC game of May continues to hold the #1 spot in most markets - - More than 700.000 gamers have registered an Age of Conan account so far -

Durham, USA – June 30, 2008 – Eidos and Funcom are proud to announce that Age of Conan continues to dominate the PC sales charts in all markets where the game is available. Over the last few weeks it has remained the overall #1 PC game in most European markets, whilst also performing tremendously well on several all-format charts. In the US, Age of Conan impressively conquered the #1 PC spot for the first two weeks of available NPD data. Due to the amazing interest surrounding the game, more than 700.000 gamers have now signed up for an Age of Conan account. In the second month after release it is also clear that Age of Conan has taken the position as the undisputed #2 subscription MMO in the western world.

When Age of Conan stormed into retail stores as what we believe to be the most pre-ordered original PC game in history, it instantly became the best selling PC game of May. The pace at which Age of Conan sold made it one of the fastest selling PC games of all times, and Funcom and Eidos are therefore very satisfied to see the positive sales trend continue. As all countries report sales differently, it is not possible to get a complete overview of the exact box sales at the time of writing, but Age of Conan remains the top selling PC game in most all released markets. This includes being the #1 overall PC game in June in the Nordic countries, Oceania, Germany, France and Spain, as well a top three contender in all other markets where the game is out. No substantial sales data for June is yet available from the US market, but Age of Conan was the #1 PC game in the latest official NPD update.

“That Age of Conan remains #1 in retail stores several weeks after release is of incredible importance to us, and proves that the game has a large potential beyond the early adopters,” said Morten Larssen, VP of Sales & Marketing in Funcom. “With more than 700.000 accounts created so far we have a fantastic platform to build from, and we will continue our marketing spend to further drive numbers in the months to come. It also means that Funcom can dedicate significant development resources on evolving the game even further, naturally giving us a great hope for the future of Age of Conan.”

“We are incredibly pleased to see Age of Conan turning into an MMO phenomenon,” said Gaute Godager, Game Director on Age of Conan. “As an MMO company we know that a good start is just the beginning for a virtual world. All we care about now is to make Age of Conan into an even better game, and we have extensive plans to ensure that Age of Conan remains a top MMO alternative for many years to come.”

<![CDATA[Sony Moves 3.9 Million Units Over The Holidays]]> SFM066LOGO.jpeg In yet another press release today, Sony announced that they sold over 3.9 million hardware units over the 2007 holiday season. This number of course, is an accumulation of all gaming hardware sold including the PS2, PSP and PS3 in the time from Black Friday, November 23 to December 31. Here's the breakdown:

• PSP: 1.4 Million Units
• PS2: 1.3 Million Units
• PS3: 1.2 Million Units

It's interesting to note that the PS3 sold less units than both the PSP and the PS2. Not only that but the PS2 sold almost as many units as the PSP and is making up a third of Sony's total sales. Not too shabby for a seven year old system.

<![CDATA[Casual Gaming Requires Casual Fact Check]]> VH1 Game Break did a little more legwork on a Casual Games Association stat that's been floating around the web, stating that casual (video) gaming is a $2.5 billion/year industry worldwide. But what's that number mean, really? What they offered was this geographical breakdown:

$720 million USA, Europe (includes online games and versions of those online games sold in retail outlets)
$517 million on mobile platforms globally
$1 billion in Asia
So what's left to learn? A lot.

Does this stat include mobile gaming? Because most mobile gaming is casual gaming. But more importantly, how is casual gaming being defined for the accounting? Because, as confusing as we're making this, maybe most mobile gaming isn't casual gaming. We don't know! It's insanity!

My guess? Casual gaming is large for people who casually spend money. And the mobile phone market sucks every consumer into that trap. We'll let you know if these numbers ever get any clearer. Because, as usual, you're on a need to know basis. Yeah, you're kind of a big deal. We get it.

<![CDATA[Nielsen Tells Us About Gaming]]>

Ten things I learned at the presentation by Nielsen Vice President Jeff L. Herrmann about their new measuring system for game play.

1. Men aged 18-49 play lots of video games.
2. Lots of people own consoles.
3. A lot of people watch American Idol.
4. Women play video games too!
5. A lot of kids play on the Wii, and they mostly play when they get
back from school.
6. Gamers who play on the 360 and PS3 — they tend to be older — play
in the evening.
7. Gamers are mostly playing on the PS2.
8. Gamers are getting interested in next-gen gaming.
9. The most played PC game is World of Warcraft.
10. After stating that the heaviest gamers play an average of 10 hours a week, Mr. Herrmann explained that he would rather use that time for
sleep.

<![CDATA[Microsoft: We Pwn Video Downloads]]>

No longer content with kicking ass in the video game sales and downloadable games field, Microsoft shot off a press release today crowing about their successes with downloadable TV shows and movies.

Personally, I think the small size of the 360's harddrive and the slow download speeds make the prospect of downloading movies, especially high-def ones, untenable. But apparently a lot of 360 owners disagree with me.

Here's the tally:
Within four months of launching, Xbox LIVE has become the number one online distributor of television and feature film content in the living room where it's most easy for consumers to access.
In the same four months, the service has quickly become the number two online distributor of television and feature film content, second to iTunes.
Is currently the ONLY online distributor of major feature films and television programming in high definition (HD) resolution.
The service is a breakout success, with double-digit, month-over-month growth since launching.
Monthly downloads from Xbox LIVE went up 400 percent since the service launched in November.

I suppose I should give it another chance. The abortive launch of the service and the resulting loss of time, harddrive space and Microsoft points just left a really bad taste in my mouth.

<![CDATA[Sony: 2 Million PS3s By Year's End, UK ASAP]]> Three days ago Sony Computer of America's David Karraker assured the world that the have fixed all Playstation 3 manufacturing problems and that the company remains focused on getting 1 million PS3s to stores by the end of the year.

Today Sony Corp's President, Ryoji Chubachi, reaffirmed that, saying that Sony is sticking to its target of shipping 2 million PS3s by the end of the year.

"It's true that availability has been a bottleneck," Chubachi said of the PlayStation 3. "But the targets are achievable. We do not need to revise our shipment targets."

He went on to say that they still plan to hit 6 million PS3s by the end of their fiscal year in March and will launch the system in Europe "as soon as possible."

Uh, oh. As soon as possible is never good when its coming from a hardware developer.

<![CDATA[Analyst: Initial PS3 Shipment 125K to 175K]]> AmTech analyst PJ McNealy guesstimates that Sony's opening weekend shipments for the Playstation 3 were lower than the already lower than expected numbers.

Their "research" concludes that the actual Playstation 3 launch numbers were in the range of 125,000 to 175,000 and that includes the 15,000 or so being used for kiosks. No wonder people were shooting each other for the console.

If correct, its about half what McNealy though the company would get into stores for the console's launch.

On the Wii side of things, McNealy thinks Nintendo managed to get 425,000 to 475,000 out the door for their launch and expects the company to ship 1.5 to 2 million of the consoles to North American stores by the end of the year.

So far neither Sony nor Nintendo have released hard numbers for their consoles, though I suspect at least one to talk numbers for the upcoming long weekend.

<![CDATA[Rumor: Crack The Target Wii Code]]>

Some insane mathematician (whom I can only assume works at Target) over on the IGN forums has posted a complicated yet seemingly accurate way to find out how many Wii's your local Target will have on launch day. I will try and explain this as best I can, so listen up.

First, find out your chosen Target's store number. You can usually do this by looking the store up in the phone book and it will generally list the store number as well. If not, try giving them a call.

Now, please refer to the handy list provided after the jump and I will show you how to crack the number code.

Update: The cleverly title Wii Searching Doohickey will save you the headache of finding your store number and comparing it against the master list. Yay!

You will be presented with a series of numbers much like this one: 3 124 191 551 24 3

The first number in the line is the store number, in this case 3. The next to last number in the line is the number of Wii's that has been alloted to that store, in this case 24. So now we know that store #3 will be receiving 24 Wii's on launch!

I don't know about you, but when I look at a long list of numbers like that, my eyes start glazing over. It's actually quite easy once you know the method, but I still felt as smart as Russell Crowe in that movie about that guy that's good with numbers when I finally figured it out. Good luck to you!
