They probably have come to this conclusion because it won't profit or won't profit enough for it to be worth it. Then, they just might not release future games on the PC at all because the money isn't there.
I dunno. It's late and I've been drinking.
Not a simultaneous release, no (plans for) updated content, and they'll probably limit future releases for Windows. The logic seems very circular. You could say that the effort wasn't set in place for the Windows version to be successful in the first place, but then they go and blame the market.
The only reason RE exsists in the first place is because of Windows.
Maybe it's time for a complete shift instead of this halfassed approach from Capcom? I think that's the main problem I see here. Why even bother? It doesn't seem very professional.
On a side note, why do PC versions of console games seem to require ever improving hardware when the console is static? I know the graphics can be better at times, but it doesn't seem necessary.
@madog: Uh, RE5 in DX10 mode runs flawlessly on maximum details in 1920x1200 on a 8800GT. That's mid-high performance from 3 years ago. A modern graphics card runs RE5 at 100+ FPS in same settings...
Capcom also made a nice bonus for the PC by enabling DX10, and there were actual graphics settings, and the game runs really well too. It's not like they just threw it out there. So it's odd they won't be doing it here, since the content is just that, content. The actual game has already been ported.
@Poul Wrist: yeah after reading more posts it seems to run well on many PCs, but that comment was kind of general. I think it comes from reading about Borderlands and other games that were ported to the PC, but require more processing power than what the 360 currently has.
I guess that could be chalked up due to coding and optimization of the games for consoles getting better and better as time goes on.
@noliferuin: My bad. The first time I played it was on the PC. It was so long ago I guess I thought that the PS wasn't even out yet, and the console version came out later.
This doesn't directly affect me as I own it on PS3 and would never dream of playing a Resident Evil game on anything other than a PlayStation console.
But it really sucks when devs or publishers flat out refuse to support the PC version of their games. It's really unfair for those whon paid for the PC version expecting the full experience.
Like when Ubisoft decided the PC version of Prince of Persia didn't need the ending of the game...
I still haven't grabbed the prologue myself but I originally intended to get the game for PC and when I found out it wouldn't come out, that pretty much threw a wrench in my plans.
Oh well, at least those who play RE5 on PC get the 3D thing. I really should give that a try one day.
Haha. That's because they can't figure out a way to charge for DLC they release on the PC. Anything they try to DRM will end up hacked and torrented around for free.
I'm not too disappointed, since I know PC will probably get it sooner or later anyway, and I still have a lot left to do in Mercenaries, but I was very much looking forward to the "flashback" episode.
@relatively_speaking: How is it a port? It was devoloped on the PC and runs very, very well on newer hardware. I benchmark it at over 150fps with 16x AA.
Have yet to see a glich in game either, so why do think anyone would find this version anything but excellent?
@dracosummoner: I actually play the game itself with the verticle sync enabled with the framerate unlocked to get the best visual results, so it sticks right at 60 fps. I guess my point about the benchmark is it shows a very smooth polished PC game.
@homernoy: Yeah I have the game for 360 and haven't played the PC version, but I did try the benchmarking program and it ran smooth as silk. I was super impressed.
I guess Capcom is just one of those companies that releases PC ports months after the console release. And then get surprised that it doesn't sell. Because i assume that's why we aren't seeing this or say Super Street Fighter IV on PC ... yet.
Because its not like every single person who wanted to play RE5 did so six months before the PC version was released.
Not that i'm mad i just think its stupid on their part... But atleast they bother to release decent ports, well except RE4 o.0
HEY PC GAMERS! DO YOU LOVE HALO? (No.) ARE YOU UPSET THAT YOU CAN'T PLAY HALO 2 ON YOUR PC!? (Not really.) THEN YOU ARE GONNA LOVE PAYING MORE THAN FULL PRICE FOR THIS PORT OF AN OLD XBOX TITLE!!!
Of course, when it doesn't sell well that means PC gaming is dying.
Sorry to hear that you don't like considerably better performance on the PC version compared to the likely short DLCs on console.
Realistically speaking, the game never found an audience that's anywhere the size of the console one. It's perfectly understandable.
You want an example of a dirty move by Capcom in recent years? SSFIV being a standalone game and not a DLC. DMC4 PC, which they admitted to be a bomb, having significant content that they never released on console.
Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and enjoy what you have. Which is why I recently got rid of all current consoles but the PS3 because of the BD factor and free online. After impulse purchases of all 3, I realized that I'm not interested in enough games to keep all of them.
So I made the decision and I'm happy with it. I'm due for an upgrade on my PC, so I'll just build a decent gaming rig as a companion for some superior versions.
RE5 is on my list for PC for sure. Fantastic port.
@SG79: Jeez, there is only so much that can be done over DLC. 8-10 new characters, new stages, completely revamped online, new moves and balance changes, and more.
There is too much new content to make it DLC, and on top of that, it's not even going to be a full price game. It's going to cost $40.
Unlike RE5, where it's just more levels and costumes being added, it's easy for DLC for that game the way it's structured.
@supo: The way Fallout is structured is different. They planned the massive DLC when the game was being made.
Plus, all that DLC costed $20 a piece, and there were 5 of them, so thats $100 on top of the $60 you bought for the game, and you NEED the disk to play it. I can always sell off my original SFIV when Super comes out. Even if for only $10. The disk would just be collecting dust, as I won't need it anymore.
Super Street Fighter IV has too much changes to just patch it in.
Also, remember that Tournament play is very important to the fans, and having to get all those tourney consoles online, and downloading it for all the consoles seems like a real headache. I'm sure a lot of tourney sites also have piss poor online connections rented from hotels. It would be a lot easier for everyone to just buy a couple of disks, and pop it in.
Don't get me wrong, I love DLC, but not everything fits right with it. I would rather buy a new disk, and having it a reduced price point makes the purchase easier.(I was going to wait on a price drop for SSFIV if it was full price.)
@spiderweb1986: By that same logic companies likewise don't have the luxury of taking risks porting DLC for the PC version when it is most likely the lowest selling version of the game by far. Honestly, Capcom is a company looking to maximize there profits, and it is quite likely that devoting time to making PC DLC will not work towards that bottom line.
In a bad economy I'm sure they can make money "better" ways (like making $3 costumes for the console versions of their games <)
Note: Yes, Erinaldo's comment is arrogant or ignorant or something, so I'm not supporting his comment.
@Erinaldo: Yep, so since I bought RE5 on PC and I own a PS3, I guess I should just buy the whole game again, on my PS3, and everyone will be happy (except me) because they get MORE money
The only thing I don't necessarily agree with is the cost of PC DLC. Obviously, it's going to take some time and money to port it and ensure it works, but from everything I've heard about how easy it is to port between the PC and 360, it seems like simply having the DLC exist for the 360 removes a large amount of the work it'd take to produce DLC for the PC version.
That said, I've got no idea what kinds of costs are involved in that process anyway, so I could be (and probably am) wrong. The PC market is clearly a lot smaller to begin with, judging from the number of PC copies of good games like Mercenaries 2 or Mirror's Edge that show up at my local Big Lots.
Oh no, no Re5 PC DLC? None at all? But.. we always get stuff.. we're PC gamers... I know! Let's boycott it and have a big eProtest!
Seriously though, I'm starting to hate that word being used now. What happened to "not acknowledging something's presence", "ignoring it", or "I'll accept that it exists but I'm not going to buy it and I'm not going to make a fuss about why I've chosen not to"? A few thousand fans isn't going to change a developer's opinions overnight, and a few thousand game sales of a Triple-A title isn't exactly going to make even a scratch on their balance sheets at fiscal quarter end. So I'm calling this move by the fans before it happens. It's up to the developers what we all get. Remember if it's not for them we'd have no game at all.
@supo: Exactly. Piracy in the videogame industry is what forces people like Pandemic to close, and closed studios do not make games. I'll admit that I have downloaded pirate copies of games before (back from before I had a job) but now that I am employed myself and have a somewhat steady income, I haven't pirated a game since, and have spent nearly €300 on Steam games alone in the last 4-5 months.
@Space Jesus: I think the PC people were lucky Capcom even made a PC version to begin with. None of Capcom's PC versions have ever done well and I'm surprised they continue to support it.
@Space Jesus: Don't worry, it's only temporary, my space friend Jesus: once they've rooted out those pesky PC gamers who are used to getting extra content (maps, mods, etc.) for free, they can work on raising a brave new generation who will happily pay for avatars, costumes packs and multiplayer modes.
@Space Jesus: The way I see it is that with a console that is based off PC libraries and a lower chance their game is going to get pirated. Microsoft effectively shifted their markets developers from PC to console. Plus the change of not having to deal with hardware incompatibility factors. Big win. There is my guess why PC is getting the shaft, not worth the hassle.
@Antiterra: But I need my skateboard that no one will ever see unless they look at me in their friends page for over thirty seconds, which no one ever does, so I can look cool.
@Space Jesus: You'd think RE5 on PC is a GamesForWindowsLive title that anything that is done on XB360 of the same game would be available for both.
This is why I never took Capcom seriously when they said they'll support PC games. I am surprised though they have been doing a good job on the games they released after RE4 (since it was a port and outsourced).
I agree with him of the assessment that it would fragment the community. I just can't believe they would think of the community before their financial interests... very odd to hear of this. Unless of course, they think they can make more money this way :-P #littlebigplanet
I only rented the game, and plan to pick up the GOTY copy, and maybe someone can answer a few questions.
Does MM make new levels for sale, or am I relegated to playing user created levels? I don't like community built levels. I will pay for more MM made levels, either by DLC or a sequel.
Game music. This is something that gets updated with sequels. It changes the flavor, and reduces the redundancy of the game. #littlebigplanet
