And THAT's why the 360 and PS3 will live on...only Nintendo is making major money on their own platform...as usual. If 3rd parties want a chance at making some bank, they have to release it on the true next gen systems where grandma's aren't just buying exercise video games.
It does warm my heart a little bit to know that Mario Galaxy has outsold both Animal Crossing and Wii Music combined..and is only half a million units removed from Smash Brothers.
@FarmboyinJapan: You haven't read these analyses of how Animal Crossing is the most complex and hypocritical critique of consumer capitalism ever devised? AC is serious business bitch.
nintendo is kiddie toy, feel a bit sorry. A bunch of pokemon games, brain age fuitness, and pet games. I would only buy super mario bros ds and rest would big NO.
I believe, regardless of what companies banner you wave, we can all (collectively as gamers loving games) appreciate a console doing well during these economically hard times. Even though I prefer a certain genre, console, franchise--what have you--I never wish any company or game fails. As a gamer first and foremost, one that has dipped his hand in all three corporations' console's, I can say I am glad that Nintendo has turned its ship around and is effectively staving off the money sink that is devouring the global economy.
And all with a dual-screen'd handheld and an underpowered console with a gimmick that works.
Na, there are hard brand loyalist here, they don't flinch even a little in these rough times.
Its actually sad, no one paid them to be that way, there are no real benefits to be brand loyalist, its all alucinations created by media and companies to get people buy their games.
Console wars may exist since the SNES era, but right now is the most pathetic, saddest thing there is, from what I get, people spend more time bashing the competition than playing games. Its becoming tired, and in the end we may all drag the industry in a way its not supposed to be.
@WDYC: The *one* possible benefit I can see from brand loyalty is with a big enough voice, you can get more of whatever you want on your console of choice. Simultaneously, if you know how to hit the right notes, you can discourage development on other consoles.
I guarantee if so many stopped with their asinine "more power means better games" philosophy, we'd have more 3rd party games on Nintendo worth shaking a stick at.
@phinehas: I don't know if brand loyalty could save Nintendo's catalog these days. The influx of money from casual games is just too huge.
I was a die-hard Nintendo loyalist from ages 2-18. I didn't drop my GameCube for the XBox when it came out because the XBox had better graphics. I dropped it because they'd ceased producing the RPGs and FPSs that Nintendo had helped popularize on their earlier consoles. Everybody on my freshman dorm hall played Halo constantly over LAN. This kind of multiplayer cooperation and competition didn't exist on the Cube. I still feel loyalty to the first-party products, but my Cube and Wii just sit there until these are released. And they don't hold my attention like their N64 counterparts did back in the day.
I've tried playing the new Mario Kart online; it's an exercise in tedium and frustration. I get the argument against "better graphics means better games," but fail to see any argument against the power of my 360's online community. Griefers and the subscription fee aside, I prefer the more reliable connection and the ease of finding people I like to play with to anything the Wiimote can offer me.
@chungking.espresso: But these aren't things to be held against Nintendo as a company by the population at large, they are your personal tastes.
If Nintendo had an online community like the Xbox, i'd like it a lot less. Maybe their online isn't perfect, but I perfer it to being on the recceiving end of a string of curses vomited up by a 12 year old boy.
Furthermore, Nintendo doesn't have any flagship RPGs, it's the 3rd parties who left and took their RPGs with them.
You know why I bought a Wii? It's this same reason I bought a GC and an N64. Zelda. I personally, don't like "community" gaming. If I want to play a multiplayer game, I'll invite friends over and make a party of it.
Your post is in fact a perfect example of what is wrong with people this generation. Everything is layed at Nintendo's feet. It wasn't Sony's fault when developers made a metric ton of bad games for the PS2, but for some reason no one is to blame but Nintendo when the same thing happens to the Wii.
I don't see how having a more diverse and connected community could be a bad thing. Of course there would be the occasional dicks, but it's not because of an online community that they are dicks. It's just because they are inherently dicks.
I'm sure Nintendo would love to have the online community the Xbox 360 currently enjoys. The Wii's online offering is laughable, jilted, and at best, paltry. It really is an afterthought; Nintendo probably didn't have enough games on the horizon that could utilize online capability to full capacity, or they didn't have the resources to push a fleshed out online service.
The accessibility of online gaming is much more favorable compared to calling your friends over when you just have an urge to game. I'm in no way advocating that online multiplayer is better than same-room, next-to-your-buddies multiplayer, but to shun online gaming is at its sincerest an act of fanboyism.
The difference with the PS2 is that its metric ton of bad games were usually multiplatform, so the shit was evenly distributed. The amount of shovelware being dumped exclusively on the Wii is shameful. And where the PS2 had mountains upon mountains of great exclusive titles to make amends, the Wii, at this stage, does not have that luxury.
@Trey: Nintendo is also not MS, and they have little to no experience with online. And expecting them to pull off the equivilant of LIVE is rediculous.
And shunning "communal" gameing isn't fanboyism, it's personal opinion. I don't like working in groups, never have. I hated group projects in school and I am not a fan of playing team sports. Like wise, I don't like group gaming. Don't project your views onto the world as a whole.
And no, there are a metric ton of PS2 games that were exclusives. Don't believe me, go have a look. If they were really all multiplatform, then the Xbox and GC libraries would not have been so comparitively tiny.
@chungking.espresso: Perhaps that is how you meant it, but that was not how it was stated. You condemed Nintendo for not being MS. Learn to state your oppinions as oppinions, not facts.
@EmeraldDragon: The difference between my preference for the 360 and yours for the Wii is that I'll admit when a feature or flagship game on my system is crap. On the other hand, your virulent approval of anything Nintendo on every point (in posts you've strewn across the blog) shows no such even-handedness.
@chungking.espresso:The difference is, there's games that are crap and games not for you. Your posting has much which you need to shape up, as it is right now, you uphold the facebook stigma.
@Trey:Xbox Live has cost Microsoft about 20 to 40 million dollars to bring to it's current state. They also have WAY more background in network building and can offset/underwrite the costs of hosting server farms and all of that. Nintendo can not even as cash flush as they are, the costs would be much, much higher.
