Ironically what's selling me the most on this game, after reading this article, is that it's kinda a Roguelike game. I dismissed it as another JRPG before now (I've honestly given up on that "genre. Bought so many during the PS2 era and really never enjoyed or beat many of them. A truly great "JRPG", i hate that term BTW, is a genuinely wondrous thing, but they're so few and far between) but now it seems kind of intriguing.
I do like rougelikes so this is interesting. I actually managed to beat ADOM this one time, it took maybe 3 years. Nethack, I still haven't gotten past Medusa. I always come prepared with a blindfold but I forget about the electric eels that drag me underwater.
This is fine, but they need to add "hard mode" to make it play like it does on the DS. (I apologize since I'm sure this was probably already said a hundred times and I posted before reading previous comments.)
@Knoxximus ver. 5.66: what was mentioned only applies to the "normal" dungeon. Even the original Shiren let you teleport back to camp repeatedly and eventually make a kaburasutegi+99 and fuuma shield+99; a pointless affair, as the special endgame dungeons reset your level and equipment as soon as you enter them.
hell, I just looked it up and indeed, a few of the endgame dungeons reset your level; some don't, but do silly shit like placing tons of mobs that kill you in 2 hits with the best possible shield that you can forge.
on second note, why doesnt nintendo combine the dsiware/wiiware store?
sony pretty much does it, and msft could easily have added buttons on the zune hd and had an excellent portable.
i think it would be cool to have something like dq IX stored on your wii (esp if it had an hdd), and when you played it on the ds.. the save would transfer. so those of us who would like to play it on the tv when at home could do so.
@Pretty Sneaky Sis: Golden Sun 3 and I am completely satisfied. Pokemon is the icing on the cake, but its been so long since Golden Sun 2 came out, it way past overdue.
the ds has become the place for japanese devs to show that they still can make some excellent games. id argue that the best jrpgs and arcade-ish (aka "oldschool") experiences come from the ds.
since i got my ps3 last fall.. ive neglected my portables.. but starting now and continuing to next year.. its pretty crazy for my pocket. i gotta buy all these great games for wii, ps3, ds, and then 360 and psp. and i support ipod touch gaming.. so ill have things to get there as well. dang i need 2 new jobs lol.
im interested in golden sun ds (nintendos shining force), im curious about heracles, and dq IX, sands of destruction, infinite space, and okamiden all look good! and shantae?! ive been following this game forever.. i cant wait. alls thats missing is a new 2d sonic, mega man zx, castlevania, and a 2d metroid.
i think im going to show my ds lots of love in 2010.
The original Super-Famicom release was probably one of the best games ever released for the system. Dunno about the Wii version though, a lot of Shi-rangers (Shiren fanatics) and fansites have slammed its quality. Wonder if anything's been tweaked for the US release -- should only be a matter of copying fixes made for the impending PSP release in Japan.
BTW, Atlus may be the publisher but I think Chunsoft needs at least a nod as being the developer.
@Shiryu: Yeah? I'm not really. I think alot of companies could do more with the wii than they could. I've heard that this game isn't going to be very long or challenging. Then again, I don't think it's targeted at my age group, so I can't complain. Back to Demon's Souls!
@Danza: I mean the original for the SNES (never came out west) and the sequel on the DS which was ignored. And it's a great game. I like "Chocobos Dungeon" on the Wii, it was also very poorly marketed and almost no one noticed it came out. Hope this doesn't end the same way.
@Danza:
Not challenging? Can't say anything for this particular Wii game, of course, but even if they dialed back the difficulty knob on Roguelikes halfway, they'd still put Demon's Souls to shame.
@emag: Whoa, those are some heavy words, sir! I am forced to respectfully disagree and note that each game type takes different types of gaming skill. If you would like to further discuss this, I will be wearing my monocle at 43rd and main, and await your arrival and debate over tea.
That's a really great idea, I was in a game shop earlier (YAY! I GOT OUT OF THE HOUSE!) and saw a couple wondering if they should by GTA:CW for their young son who liked racing games. I did sort of rather loudly say to my partner that it was half price and she could try running down pedestrians or dealing drugs, they overheard me and changed their mind.
Being able to see the trailer for this in a store would have been great for them as they obviously didn't know much about games.
2009 was a really good year for the DS, as cited by the aforementioned games. I can easily say that 2010 will better for every other system, except the DS. Sure I couldn't be more excited for Edgeworth, but it is going to be hard to beat the overall amount of quality games added to the DS library from last year: Moon, Henry Hatsworth, Knights in the Knightmare, SMT: Devil Survivor, GTA: CW, M&L: BIS, Big Bang Mini, Kingdom Hearts, Phantasy Star 0, and a Legend of Zelda game, yeah 2010 has its work cut out for it if it is going to better than 2009 on the DS.
