PSP, PlayStation 2 and PLAYSTATION 3 sales are all up from the previous two weeks. Even the PS3 has pulled itself out from the below 10K per week sales gutter with a 24% week over week improvement. Why the change? Surely, Sony hardware is flying off the shelves due to the release of the new Super Robot Wars OG: Original Generations game.

  • Nintendo DS Lite - 157,435
  • Wii - 73,919
  • PSP - 38,305
  • PlayStation 2 - 16,316
  • PLAYSTATION 3 - 11,914
  • Xbox 360 - 3,154
  • Game Boy micro - 377
  • Game Boy Advance SP - 179

Overall, much money was exchanged between Japanese gamers and retailers. We'll see how long this Super Robot Wars sales explosion lasts and how long it will help shift Sony hardware starting next week.

<![CDATA[Rumor Mill Spits Out DS Redesign Talk]]> Heavily doubted rumors that Nintendo is creating a new hardware version of its Nintendo DS have sprung up, spread about the Web, and wound up in our mailbox. The source of these rumors, Japanese language magazine Gamelabo, contests that Nintendo is currently hard at work on yet another variant of its super popular dual-screen handheld.

While that may sound like one of the silliest, least grounded in reality rumors you may have heard in at least a week—why redesign one of the hottest pieces of electronics while the company is struggling to meet demand?—this one has a dash of sense to it. According to Portable Video Gamer's translation of the Gamelabo story, Nintendo is simply looking to tailor its hardware to the older set. That means bigger, more visible buttons and a larger screen.

If that's the case, I would suggest a pill holder attachment and First Alert hardware integration. Gamers fall down and can't get up to, you know.

<![CDATA[Simple 2000: The Japanese Hardware Chart]]> There are few surprises in this week's Media Create hardware sales chart, as general weekly trends continue. The Nintendo DS Lite once again murdered the competition, selling at a rate even better than the previous week's 255,000. Unexpectedly, the GameCube saw a mini-sales surge in Japan, besting list bottom-feeders like the Game Boy micro and GBA SP. PLAYSTATION 3 hardware continues its two-week streak of marginally improved sales.

  • DS Lite - 285,123
  • Wii - 101,320
  • PSP - 35,172
  • PlayStation 2 - 14,815
  • PLAYSTATION 3 - 12,974
  • Xbox 360 - 3,205
  • GameCube - 394
  • Game Boy micro - 340
  • Game Boy Advance SP - 302

The best news? An (arguably valid) excuse to post my zombie GameCube Photoshop creation which makes this Simple 2000: The Japanese Hardware Chart post my personal favorite.

<![CDATA[Widespread Pixel Death, or Snarky Employees?]]>

A Kotaku reader who barely escaped with his life from Nintendo World yesterday wrote in to regale us with his harrowing tale. Take it away, Jeremy:

Picked up my DS Lite at the Nintendo World (NYC) this afternoon. They had approximately 1.2 bajillion of them, no shortage in sight. Walked a few blocks, sat down, and turned it on. A dead pixel! A few hours later, walk back to the store to exchange it...the helpful employee begins the exchange process, and a manager type fellow walks over. They look at each other, he in hushed tones asks, "Another one", to which was replied, "Uh huh", to which both rolled eyes and shook their heads. None of my probing could get an answer other than "I plead the fifth". Seems like this may be a more serious problem.

Now, were they rudely catting about our dear reader's justifiable request for a new DS, having dealt with general retail annoyances all day, or were they referring to a more serious dead pixel problem? Weigh in, commentors, who's got dead pixels on their Lites?

Here's what Nintendo's DS Lite looks like from the inside out. Note the ruler next to the handheld? That should give you a better idea of what you'll get your hands on.

Thanks Sinner.

<![CDATA[The Dark DS Lite]]> What dreams are made of

The above image is very likely just someone doing wonderful things with Photoshop and not an official Nintendo image. But that's the kind of DS Lite I want to get my hands on.
