What really is an exhibit of intellect? The creature who will do whatever you say, or the one who thinks for itself? Pack mentality has no baring on intellect. If anything is shows desperate co-dependence. Wolves may be able to gang up and run down an Elk, but a Leopard can take down an animal of only moderately smaller size by waiting in ambush.
Which of these is really a betterr stratagy? The wolves who work hard for a meal they then have to share, or the Leopard who works less and keeps the whole prize for themselves. #shigerumiyamoto

Social behaviour != intelligence.
Cats are generally seen as much more self sufficient than dogs. One could make the same argument that independent behaviour is just a big a sign of intellectual superiority as social ability.
At any rate intellect aside I think that cats make superior pets, at least in terms of maintenance. My cat keeps herself immaculately clean, does her business outside and buries it and even knows when to leave my room in the evening*. Plus yknow Kittens Puppies.
* She has to sleep downstairs in the kitchen/study area at night because otherwise she wakes people up too early whining for her breakfast. #shigerumiyamoto
