Alongside a quick primer on winter, Christmas and Hannukah specific content, such as Christmas NiGHTS for the Sega Saturn and The Sims 2 Holiday Stuff, he explores the potential gain that publishers and developers could reap from throwaway titles that appeal to the holiday spirit. Sure, there are a few snow and ice levels thrown about, but no one's taking Christmas seriously.

It's a fantastic question, I think, as Hollywood has no fear trotting out the cinematic goods that have a very brief window of appropriateness. Right now, three holiday films—Fred Claus, This Christmas and The Perfect Holiday—are currently showing in the US top ten box office, but there's not much beyond timed events, downloadable clothing and quests that are holiday specific in games these days. Holiday era re-issues on titles that underperformed or could appeal to the pre-order shy might be something the industry should think about.

We're just about up to our eyeballs in Christmas cards from developers, but what about demos for already released games with a candy cane or two thrown in? One might think that with all that downloadable content out there, whether free or pay-to-play, it might make financial sense to toss in an elf or Hannukah Harry.

Actually, I won't be surprised to see 2K or Midway ship a Wii minigame collection next November. Any games that you can think of that would benefit from a holiday re-skin?

<![CDATA[Christmas NiGHTS To Be Included In PlayStation 2 Remake]]> The remake of NiGHTS Into Dreams for the PlayStation 2 is, so far, still currently a Japan-only release. However, that will surely change based on demand for the Saturn classic, now that Sega of Japan has confirmed that the limited Christmas NiGHTS edition of the original game will be included in the PS2 port as a "Christmas Dream", unlocked by completing the standard edition of the game.

Please register your interest for Sega of America executives in the comments, but please, no threats of bodily harm.

<![CDATA[NiGHTS PS2 Remake Stays True To Bad Graphics]]> Don't worry, we're still getting updated graphics with our PlayStation 2 port of Sega's Saturn era hit NiGHTS Into Dreams. However, Sega looks to have stayed true to the 1996 original, including the game's original presentation in the remake. It's probably designed to make you appreciate the new coat of paint.

Good thing, too, as Sega's other Saturn-era remakes released under the budget Sega Ages line were starting to make the PlayStation 2 version of NiGHTS Into Dreams look like a bit of a rip-off. Non-postage stamp sized screens are available at Gpara.

<![CDATA[NiGHTS into Dreams Onto PS2]]> Fans of the original NiGHTS Into Dreams have been watching the development of the Wii sequel, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams with a delightful mixture of joy and anxiety, fearing their beloved title would be marred by the shaky hand of a Sega not quit as sure of themselves as they were back in the days of the Saturn. In an absolutely wondrous turn of events, those players need not worry about getting their NiGHTS on proper, as long as they have a PlayStation 2 around. Famitsu has revealed that a port of the original game will be hitting the PS2 this February in Japan, complete with updated graphics and 16:9 modes for those newfangled wide screen televisions we keep hearing about. For me this is even better news than the Wii sequel. Screw Journey of Dreams - this is all I wanted. Slip Christmas NiGHTS in there as a bonus and I'm set for another 10 years.

<![CDATA[Sonic X-Treme "Nights Version"]]>

This Saturn-era Sonic the Hedgehog never made it past this conceptual stage. Why? I'll let YouTube uploader AssemblerX explain.

This is a video of the concept "nights" version of Sonic Xtreme for Sega Saturn. Looking to produce a concept for a 3D sonic, a Sega USA team either used or closely followed the design of "Nights" and caused problems internally at Sega. Thinking or knowing that the US team had used their engine, the Japanese nights team had a fit. The engine was scrapped and a different engine, the so called "fish eye" version was used. This engine was later canceled as unworkable.

There's not much to it, but it looks at least somewhat workable from my perspective.

<![CDATA[Gallery: NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams]]> Sega has released five high-quality screens of their upcoming Wii sequel to the Sega Saturn classic NiGHTS, some of which have shown up previously in European mags. Check out the gallery and let us know what you think.

I'll come clean and admit that, even though I own the original NiGHTS Into Dreams and still have my Saturn stashed in the back room, I haven't touched the thing in close to a decade. Worse, I hardly remember how the thing played. Maybe I should put that on the list of What I'm Playing This Weekend...

<![CDATA[Yuji Naka: No Sequels For Me]]> We already know that Sonic the Hedgehog creator Yuji Naka won't be on board for the next version of Sega's NiGHTS, but the famed developer now says he doesn't want to work on sequels or ports at all. Guess that means the future of Billy Hatcher is in jeopardy.

Now at indie developer Prope, Naka and his team of roughly two-dozen staff members instead want to focus on "works that have the power to fill the children of the world with dreams." Magical! He's sounding more and more like he would be at home in the Tokyo equivalent of Neverland Ranch ensconced in purple velvet atop a throne built from gingerbread and lollipops.

Sadly, we have little more to go on in regard to Prope's plans, only that they're going to platform agnostic in the Sega tradition.

<![CDATA[NiGHTS Sequel Confirmed]]> No more rumors. No more speculation. Swedish videogame mag GameReactor has released a teaser image of their upcoming April issue—they're quite serious, mind you—featuring their "exklusivt!" reveal of Sega's sequel to the Saturn classic NiGHTS Into Dreams. Funny that they don't actually mention the hardware platform, isn't it? Still, the fact that the Official Nintendo Magazine in the UK is running their NiGHTS issue soon leads us to conclude it's coming to the Wii. For now.

Thanks for the heads up, Alexander!

<![CDATA[Yuji Naka: No NiGHTS For Me]]> The Official Nintendo Magazine promises they're not yanking our chain when it comes to the obvious NiGHTS Into Dreams teaser they've included in their latest issue. Regardless of whether the game comes to Nintendo's Wii or not, former Sega designer and Sonic creator Yuji Naka won't be on board.

At least that's what he says.

CVG spoke with the figurehead behind the original NiGHTS game for the Sega Saturn who stated he had "no such intentions" of revisiting the franchise. Now with the partially Sega funded Prope studio, Naka's involvement doesn't really mean squat. Sega's been passing around classic franchises to all sorts of dev houses lately, so a NiGHTS sequel developed by an internal or outsourced team is still a possibility.

Still, I'm with Luke. Give me a Samba de Amigo sequel before this!

<![CDATA[Radiant Silvergun 3 For 360? Nights For Wii?]]> We dutifully passed on word in September that Project RS3 (for Radiant Silvergun 3, in which Project RS2 became Dreamcast shooter Ikaruga) was headed to the Xbox 360. Well, we passed on an assumption from Play that Treasure's "original shooting game" was rumored to be a trilogy-ending vertical shooter in the vein of Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga, but so far we've seen nothing concrete from Treasure or Microsoft. The only thing we know Treasure is officially working on is a sequel to their Nintendo DS fighter Bleach.

Still, hope survives in the form of a release list from G-Rev—who just happen to have nothing to do with shmup developers G.rev, who, also unrelated, are responsible for Xbox 360 wet dream shooter-fighter Senko no Ronde as well as Dreamcast faves Border Down and Under Defeat.

The list, linked from the dark and lovely Brandon of Insert Credit and currently roaming the internet, also features another to-good-to-be-true title, NiGHTS for the Nintendo Wii.

But what do we have to go on with NiGHTS for the Wii? Pretty much nil. Sega has done virtually nothing with the franchise since its debut in 1996, but that hasn't stopped every Sonic Team and Yuji Naka hyperfan from putting a sequel or remake on his or her fantasy list alongside every new console release.

Is this just an internet rumor running wild, ultimately showing up on G-rev's exhaustive console listing? That's my guess. With Sega focusing on older IP like Alien Syndrome and After Burner, however, we'll rule nothing out.

I honestly hope this is true and that someone will have the good sense or financial recklessness to release a top-down shooter in the West, but I'm not holding my breath. As for NiGHTS Into Dreams for the Wii? I'm not going to set myself up for disappointment. I'm assuming this, like Shenmue III, will never see the light of day.

Pray that I'm wrong!
