WTF? So there won't be any new games coming out for the N-series?? Really, WTF. I can't play Hexic forever, you know!

Edit - Oh, the games are just being moved to the OVI store. That's not so bad. Why bring this news as bad? It's not, really!

At the store I work at, these guys sold an N Gage for gas money. They said they had been driving around all over town trying to find a place that would buy it. I gave them like 2 dollars for it, and 1 dollar for all of their games. Probably would have been better to just stay at home, I think.
But hey, at least I got a N Gage now! :D #ngage

@Vecha: Monday 3pmEST Kotaku Bioware: i used to have the n-gage, actually probably still do somewhere... there were a few decent games on it, splinter cell was good on it, and call of duty was OK but had terrible draw distance (enemies would just appear right infront of you!)... there was a good Fifa game on it and a Tony Hawks game too #ngage

You have to admit...it was ahead of it's time.

The Iphone is basically just an evolved Ngage.

Sort of how the Dreamcast did Online console gaming before XBL/PSN took off.

Of course...I think more people loved the Dreamcast..... #ngage

@oosiegewolfoo: Buttons are certainly superior, IMO, than a touchscreen, but that doesn't make the N-Gage superior - only gives it a slight advantage.

Not that it matters, because the buttons sucked ass, if I remember correctly. #ngage

@FlameEye: hmm dont remember having any issues with the button on mine.

honestly nokia had the right idea and it was a good one, but it was poorly executed, the phone was a piece of crap, you had to hold it sideways to use it as a phone... worst design choice ever, u had to take the battery out to change the game... and the graphics were poor they could have been better, draw distance on some games made them unplayable... call of duty was one, the enemies would just appear infront of you

then they made the QD, a better design but also had its problems.... Nokia just fucked it all up, the potential was there for it but they messed it up like they mess everything up #ngage

@Bouchart: The original N-Gage phones (the weird shape phones, I think came with sonic, had carts, them ones) had been discontinued ages ago.
So N-Gage became more a Appstore for games for Nokia phones.
Which is now being ditched for "Ovi" which is being advertised to death over at Gametrailers. #ngage

Obviously many of you are completely oblivious to the N-gage 2 platform which has been around since the start of 2008. I'm quite saddened by this news actually. Nokia sold 5 million N-series devices last quarter and I assume similar results are true for previous quarters as well. So I'm guessing that since N-Gage 2 was launched about 30 million N-Gage compatible phones have been sold. That's quite a few really and it should have meant the new N-Gage could have been a significant gaming platform.

I'm not quite sure why it has performed so poorly. The games are no worse than windows mobile games or iphone games. (not particularly exciting either though!) The application itself is easy to use and you can browse the available games and download them directly on your phone. I guess it hasn't been marketed very well.

@J.K.Jerome: Nokia already lied about sales at launch, so I wouldn't trust those numbers if the company actually released those figures. I think it failed primarily due to price and just being a hideous phone. The design of the product is terrible. You do not release a crippled phone to a product whose primary function is to be a phone. Nokia forced the game playing aspect too hard. No matter what Nokia would do in the aftermath, the dismal launch and hilarity of "side talkin'" had already doomed the brand to fail.

@Kobun: The N-Gage 2 is not a phone. It is just software which runs on most N-series phones and some of the E-series phones. So the N95, N97, N78, N82, etc. are all capable of running the new N-Gage gaming software. No, I understand perfectly well my the original N-Gage phone failed. I'm surprised why the new N-Gage service hasn't done very well.

N-Gage was probably one of the biggest failed attempts at pretty much anything in recent memory. I mean, it pretty much failed at every single thing it was supposed to do. Ouch.

@KnightsofRound: It didn't fail at side talkin'. The N-Gage does have some good games on it, but no one will ever know since it never caught on. The iPhone is pretty much doing what Nokia tried so hard to do with its unit.

The N-gage never really engaged the audience. I mean Nokia's not really a bad phone manufacturer, in fact it's one of the few phone manufacturers that actually gives you a good range for your sim even when others don't.

But the gaming aspect, first as hardware platform and now as a software still needs a lot of work. It's nice to see that they're not abandoning it entirely but it's got a curse on it, just like the 3DO. Just rebrand the whole thing already so people will forget N-gage and maybe they can work on something better.

However it is unfortunate that the studio was closed down and that people lost their jobs.

Nokia's insistence is far from stupid - quite the contrary if they play their cards well.

Right now, the only good gaming phone is the iPhone. If you want those shiny mobile games, you're tied to one particular cellphone, and usually one particular provider and/or plan.

Now, imagine if Nokia were to build a strong platform which allowed you to choose from a variety of phones and any provider/plan you wanted.

I'm sure there's a large market of people who do not have nor want an iPhone, but may still be interested in gaming on their mobiles.

Nope, it definitely doesn't sound like a bad idea to me - again, provided they can provide a solid offering.
