One starts to get the sense that this year's video game harvest has almost fully come in. After the Thanksgiving feast, as the days get progressively shorter, so too does the list of new releases for the coming week. This week's AAA drop is Prince of Persia on the 360 and PS3 for Tuesday, with a version releasing on the DS the same day. Tuesday is also when the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV arrives. Space Invaders Get Even is a novelty title for WiiWare on Monday. Wednesday, you finally get Banjo-Kazooie on XBLA, for 1200 points, a steep discount from 99999 this time last week.

This week's count: 10 titles for the DS; eight for the Wii; six for the PC and Mac; four for the PS3, three for the 360 and two for the PS3. Full listing on the jump.

<![CDATA[ Week in Games: Turkey Week ]]> Thanksgiving in the United States keeps this a somewhat quiet span, although we'll see Chrono Trigger for the DS as the big-name drop for the week. And that's about it, kids, although the original Banjo-Kazooie is available on XBLA for Turkey Eve.

I'm new at this, so, I didn't know that there were North American releases usually scheduled for Thanksgiving Day itself. Unless Canadians are nuts to grab Bolt and Imagine Gymnast. Then again, the Detroit Lions do play football and sell tickets to that game on Thanksgiving, so Americans have a tradition of eschewing turkey and family for bland entertainment. Then again again, Detroit does border Ontario. The roundup this week: 14 titles on the DS, 13 for the Wii, nine for the PC, four on the 360, three on the PS3 and two for the PSP. Full roundup on the jump.

<![CDATA[ Week in Games: Tuesday's Children ]]> Tuesday. You know, every day of the week has its own profile and purpose, it seems. <![CDATA[ Week in Games: Prison Tycoon?! ]]> Big week for new releases to take advantage of the Labor Day weekend shopping. Tuesday, Tiger Woods gets his Jesus on and Disgaea 3 comes out. Thursday, the highly anticipated Castle Crashers finally arrives on XBLA. And Friday, we have not only The Sims 2: Apartment Life, but also Prison Tycoon 4: Supermax. If you rent in San Mateo, don't buy both, one will cover your entire range of experience.

Really, though, Prison Tycoon? Prison Tycoon FOUR?! How did I never hear of this? And Supermax? Supermax is administrative maximum, isn't everyone like in solitary there? (Fun fact: My landlords in Boulder did time in Florence, Colo. — scroll down to "A Trial With Teeth" — across the street at Supermax's little brother.) How is Prison Tycoon 4 any different from those sociopathic Sims videos where they box a guy in a tiny room and watch him go bonkers over the course of nine hours.

Anyhow, here's the roster, let us know what you're gettin' and how many hours of pay that computes to and don't forget to unload your Prison Tycoon 4 shower jokes.

<![CDATA[ The Week in Games: Slightly Shotgunned Formation ]]> A pretty big week considering one hard copy title, Madden 09, always sits like a 500-pound gorilla on the second Tuesday in August. Madden will release on seven — that's right — consoles, and it's not surprising that some big boxes in rural areas are breaking street on that (I bought Madden '05 in Morganton, N.C. about four days ahead).

The real action is in the realm of downloadables, like Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People, which should be a hoot and is out for Wii and PC. Bionic Commando: Rearmed provides action and nostalgia for the same low price on PSN and XBLA. There's also Fable II pub games, beating the drum for that franchise's upcoming sequel.

All things considered, this is a value-added week for new games. Which ones are you grabbing?

Monday (Aug. 11)

Tuesday (Aug. 12)

I am an inveterate button masher, and so are my friends. Plus I already blew my games budget this month on a couple of Gamefly pocket-vetoes, where you just go the hell with it and buy the game because you kinda like it and you've been paying $20 to keep it for the past month. Where was I? Yeah, here's the list of titles up for the next week, and let us know what you're gonna buy or rent in the comments.

Special Note: Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People was given a July release date for the Wii (Wiiware) and PC. That means it's either coming this week or it's late. Don't know exactly, but keep your eyes peeled.

<![CDATA[ The Week in Games: You Can Actually Play These ]]> This week won't be just about new games announced for release more than a quarter down the road. We've actually got a pretty sizeable list of drops, highlighted (for me, anyway) by NCAA Football 09, which comes out on Tuesday. This title was the reason I bought my first console since — actually since getting a Colecovision off of usenet in college. I played it on my buddy David's Gamecube in 2003, and I decided right then and there I had to have an Xbox. Oh lawdy, that was bad of me. But seriously. My crazy Vegas lawyer friend Davor had a PS2 and we'd bet on computer-vs-computer simulations, too. With a spread. Good times.

Let us know what you're buying/renting in the comments:

<![CDATA[ The Week in Games: Faster, Higher, Stronger ]]> twig.jpgWonder if Beijing 2008 will feature photorealistic smog effects or incorporate the stupefying algae bloom in the nautical events. Still, pretty ambitious of Sega to put out a sports game featuring events that even sports fans don't follow except for two weeks out of a four year span (and dropping it less than a week before NCAA Football 09). If the spirit of brotherhood and competition isn't your thang, Unreal Tournament 3 comes to 360 this week also. Or maybe you prefer Sports Party on the Wii. Or Purr Pals. <![CDATA[ The Week in Games: No Reversals! ]]> Major League Eating comes to DS this week, so you can, I dunno pack your face using the stylus while you chow down at a McDonald's on a lunch break or something. Remind me to tell you all sometime about the abortive fried chicken eating match contest I nearly got into at West Wendover, Nevada back in 2001.

Actually, that's about all there is to the story. A lawyer friend in Las Vegas, unintimidated by my claim to clean drumsticks in two bites, proposed we meet at middle ground (between Vegas and Denver) and settle up. But we couldn't get the International Federation of Competitive Eating to sanction the duel,. And my attempts to get the local chamber of commerce to give us free shit didn't pan out, either. Also, the idea of spending an entire weekend in eastern Nevada eating chicken was not, shall we say, palatable. So we both mutually bowed out. But I'll take any of your asses on, especially if you live near a Bojangles.

Anyone picking up any of these? Let us know in the comments.

<![CDATA[ The Week in Games: You Are the Music (and DS Game) in Me ]]> twig.jpgYou can expect this out of me if I'm running TWIG from now on — the WTF drop of the week is the lede, and this one is for High School Musical 2 (Two): Work This Out. A Disney press release spends reams of copy talking about the franchise's marketing chops and about a paragraph explaining why the game is worth playing. To wit:

• It's "the only musical adventure game allowing fans to immerse themselves in the world of "High School Musical 2." And thank God for that.

• You can play as one of six characters and "go on various adventures at the resort, compete in time-based challenges and play different rhythm games, all while listening to the hit songs from "High School Musical 2." Something tells me the last part of that is what Disney considers most important.

Here's the rest of your roster of new releases. Tell us in the comments if you're picking any of these up.

<![CDATA[ Week in Games: We Had the Time of Our Lives ]]> 939741_95164_front.jpgThere are 18 releases coming up this week, and the largest drop appears to be the PC versions of Assassin's Creed and Portal, plus a Half Life 2 Episode Pack. Those are the biggest names I spot anyway.

The WTF drop of the week, hands down, is "Dirty Dancing." This movie was a favorite of 40-something women strung out on prescription antidepressants and boxed wine in 1987. They're now 60-something. Not exactly the demographic that camps out on Tuesdays for a new release. Or picks up a controller. The parade of new games is after the jump:

Fab 5 Soccer (DS)
Plushees (DS)
Half-Life 2: Episode Pack (PC)
Dirty Dancing (PC)
MiniCopter: Adventure Flight (Wii)
Fatal Fury Battle Archives Vol. 2 (PS2)
Ikaruga (XBLA)
Summer Sports: Paradise Island (Wii)
Overclocked: A History of Violence (PC)
Portal (PC)
Baroque (Wii, PS2)
Arcana Heart (PS2)
Assassin's Creed (PC)

There's also Sam & Max Episode 205: What's New Beelzebub?, Civil War Mysteries, and Team Fortress 2 coming out for the PC.

If you're picking up any of these — especially Dirty Dancing, I want to know about that — let us know in the comments. Thanks.

<![CDATA[ Week In Games: Come Back Next Week Edition ]]> MANA KHEMIAMarch was a huge month for game releases. Huge. Crisis Core, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Condemned 2, God of War: Chains of Olympus—it looked more like October than March, as far as game releases go. April? It starts with but a whimper. This week sees practically nothing new in the way of marquee titles. A few Dreamcatcher Interactive numbers, a dusting of super-hardcore RPGs, but not much else.

Perhaps everyone just wants to steer clear, very clear, of Grand Theft Auto IV's April release. Next week? It's not much better.

Call of Duty 4: Game of the Year Edition (Xbox 360)
Not so much a new release, as a re-badging with a downloadable variety map pack.

Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis (PS2)
The Atelier Iris series continues to pump out more alchemy school themed role-playing games. This is one of them.

Toy Shop (DS)
Stylus controlled toy shop management fun. We're sure of everything except the fun part.

Great War Nations: The Spartans (PC)
The PC finally gets a real-time strategy game, said to feature "glorious 3D."

<![CDATA[ Week In Games: Shoot The Core ]]> The wait for more Final Fantasy VII is almost over for North American gamers, as this week's biggest drop is arguably Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII for the PSP. A slew of Wii shovelware hits, excluded from our list of new releases, but there's something for everyone!

Let us know what you're picking up this week in the comments.

Kid Naruto, radical ninja, in his third fighting adventure.

Universe At War: Earth Assault (Xbox 360)
The RTS harvests a 360 port.

Octomania (Wii)
The waggle puzzler with a Puyo Puyo pedigree.

Harvest Moon DS Cute (DS)
More farming, role-playing fun, with extra cuteness for girls.

The holiday season is here. Inside your favorite major retailer they've done away with regular muzak and replaced it with the muzak of Christmas. Soon, (some reports say "now") we'll be scooping up games for the system of Christmas future (your I waited in line overnight and all I got was this crummy white Xbox 360), but for now it's still the consoles of Christmas past. Some releases are detailed after the jump.

Gun: Tony Hawk makers Neversoft left their decks at home when they set out to make Gun a wild-west shooter that reminds me of a playable Tombstone. They even had a killer viral program to coincide with the game. Gun releases this week on GameCube, PlayStation 2, PC and Xbox. An Xbox 360 version is incoming, as well.

_the movies.jpg
The Movies: It's machinima-making in a box. When the goal of a game is to make movies, while tolerating all of the bullshit that goes into making movies (drama queen actors, over budget films, bitchy crew members), there's something pretty ambitious about the game. But what about people who just want to make movies for the "art" of making them? Are they going to be stuck having to put up with all of the faux-real life crap of The Movies just like Paul Thomas Anderson does?

_SocomBravo.jpg
SOCOM US Navy Seals Fire Team Bravo: With the ability to communicate with the PlayStation 2's SOCOM 3, PSP shows that connectivity is the future (erm, wait didn't connectivity already fail?), the multiplayer in Fire Team is robust and that should be what keeps people coming back to it, especially if you're into the whole SOCOM thing.

<![CDATA[ This Week's Releases ]]> Entering November (as we will tomorrow) ushers in the holiday season and from now until the new year consumers have the privelege of choice at the game counter. The long-awaited expansion to City of Heroes, City of Villains is finally shipping this week. For a once-over of City of Villains and some other titles to look forward to this week check the jump.

Make a Venom clone, piss off Stan Lee

Tops on my list this week, is the City of Villains expansion, if for no reason other than I can't wait to see what Marvel characters the playerbase can dupe this time. Kidding aside, CoV fits perfectly beside City of Heroes in the MMOG world. Track reviews of CoV here.

Great, another WW II game

Before anyone groans, yes Call of Duty: Big Red One is another World War II shooter. But Call of Duty ushered in the next level of immersive World War II shooters, so it earned its props here. CoD:BRO is out this week on GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

Powerful you have become, the Dark Side I sense in you

Timed with the release of the Episode III DVD is the release of Star Wars Battlefront II for the PSP, PlayStation 2, PC and Xbox. The third-person shooter pits gamers in huge battles from the Star Wars universe. Battles can take place in space, now, in addition to the on-foot action implemented in the first. Every time I see Star Wars space battles, I long for the old X-Wing and Tie Fighter games.

here i am, rock me like a hurricane
Last, but definitely not least on the list is Guitar Hero, not to be confused with Guitar Freaks, one of the games that kept arcades in America from being totally dead (DDR was another one, but the home versions have been available for a long time). The $69.99 version of Guitar Hero (picture), which is a game similar to Freaks, comes with the guitar accessory to finger out the tunes.

<![CDATA[ Tuesday's Releases ]]>

Metalheart: Replicants Rampage [PC]: Rampage is your typical cyberpunk, post-apocalyptic turn-based PC game, featuring humans, mutants, cyborgs and the always endearing and totally mysterious nomads. The game is all about forming parties, blowing stuff up and getting implants.

Screenshots

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike [Xbox]: First it was the Russians, then it was the Chinese, then North Koreans were the bad guys of the day, now its Kazakhstan, mostly because they don't have the UN connections or military muscle to stop people from painting them as a country filled with warlords, arms dealers and political corruption. And where there's a nation powerless to prevent national vilification, you will find Tom Clancy and his money-making Ghosts. This go around the Ghosts are trying to actually, no one really cares, all that matters is that you have new maps, new weapons and people to kill.

Screenshots

Shaman King: Master of Spirits 2 [GBA]: I've never been a huge fan of Nintendo's button-pushing novels disguised as games. Last go around with the Shaman King, I nearly threw my GBA out a window because I got sick of having to read what amounted to War and Peace half a sentence at a time. I'm sure this will be a huge hit among the Pokemon, Shaman King set, but I think I'm going to pass this time around.

<![CDATA[ Tuesday's releases ]]>
Outlaw Tennis [PS2, XBOX]: If outlaws can play the gentlemens game of golf, why not tennis. Curse and be otherwise lewd while batting a ball around. Parents who cashed in their Hot Coffee'ed GTAs might not want to buy this game.
Screenshots

Graffiti Kingdom [PS2]: The sequel to 2003's acclaimed Magic Pengel: The Quest for Color allows players space for 140 of your own creations, has a handful of different play modes and an hour long video.
[no screenshots available]

Blood Rayne 2 [PC]: Put nicely, a huge chested action game that will have lonely straight gamers going for both joysticks.
Screenshots

Makai Kingdom: Chronicles of the Sacred Tome [PS2]: The latest RPG from the series is intensely complicated and possibly best left to RPG-heads.
Screenshots

Delta Force: Black Hawk Down [PS2]: Did you like the movie of a similar title? Have you played Halo 2 before? If you've checked yes in both boxes, give this bloody shooter a try.
Screenshots

Harvest Moon: More Friends of Mineral Town [GBA]: Like a Tamagochi farm, this sequal builds slightly off the original. Hetero-normative as hell.
Screenshots

Harvest Moon: Another Wonderful Life [GC]: Presented in Gamecube graphics glory, this version is divided into six chapters of your life. Watch as every decision you make has an impact, even that hooker you nicely told to shut up. Yikes!

<![CDATA[ Monday's releases ]]>
Animaniacs: The Great Edgar Hunt [XBOX, GC]: Holy crap, I haven't heard anything about the Animaniacs since they were canceled years ago. Certainly a fitting topic for wacky games, this one focuses on puzzles and finding Edgar trophies, whatever that means. Could be worth getting if only for the Pinkie and the Brain minigames.
Screenshots

Codename: Panzers, Phase Two [PC]: Because World War II is the only war we care about, here's another strategy game about it! Luckily for us, this game maintains the excellence of its older brother (Phase One) and avoids being another faceless WWII game.
Screenshots

Blitzkrieg Anthology [PC]: A box set that collects all three of the Blitzkrieg series into one convenient package. Comes with an add-on that provides more missions and four multiplayer maps.
[no screenshots available]

Animaniacs: Lights, Camera, Action [GBA]: Another Animaniacs game? How did we get so lucky. This one makes light of the relative failure of the cartoon, the premise being forcing the Animaniacs to film movies to make up for all the profit they've lost Warner Brothers. If this is anything like the series, it'll be as much for the grown ups as the kids.
Screenshots

Disney's Kim Possible 3: Team Possible [GBA]: Another perilous adventure for Team Possible, with minigames and a collectable card came (like the one in Final Fantasy?) keeping the series fresh.
Screenshots

Disney's That's So Raven 2: Supernatural Style [GBA]: If you had doubts the gaming industry is counting on female gamers to get out of stagnation, knowing that this is the SECOND Raven game ought to cure you.
Screenshots

Lock On Gold [PC]: Mercifully NOT set in WWII, Lock On Gold is a modern flight simulator with a broad selection of suped up planes to fly.
