In an article in Variety yesterday, buried amongst the Warner's announcement was one line that was very important to the Blu-Ray cause:

Warner sister company New Line confirmed it will shift allegiance to Blu-ray only as well.

Warner's other companies which include HBO and BBC, still have not announced whether they will make the shift as well, but it seems unlikely that they would go the other way. But, time is of the essence for distributors it seems as Warner CEO Barry Meyer states:

"The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger."

One more nail in the HD DVD coffin?

<![CDATA[Cliffy Goes To Hollywood, Talks Gears Movie Rating]]> During the same media open house that brought you our recent Gears of War feature, Cliffy B. spoke more about the coming Gears of War movie, and more specifically, why the film needs an 'R' rating to work.

My concern is that Hollywood has this love-hate relationship with rated R movies. They go through phases where they're convinced that they can't make a rated R movie that will sell well because it will cut out that whole audience. But any time a new Saw movie or a 300 comes along, it proves them wrong.
As long as it's a good movie, people will pack in the seats. The fact that Gears is an M-rated franchise and involves people getting chainsawed in half, it's got to be a pretty f***ing hardcore movie.
I can't see a faithful Gears movie without an 'R' rating, either. Here's hoping we don't see some last second recutting. And here's hoping even more that the Gears movie is actually good and can break the generally poor critical showing video game movies encounter at the box office.

<![CDATA[Len Wiseman May Direct Gears of War Film]]> Len Wiseman, director of Live Free or Die Hard and both Underworld films is said to be in negotiations to direct New Line Cinema's Gears of War film. He's a fairly hot director at the moment, especially after building the looking-to-flop Underworld into a franchise making over $200 million worldwide. Since I haven't seen any of his three directed films, I'll refrain from judgment (at least until after the jump).

I will say, however, that anyone bitching on the topic should remember that while Gears is a great game, it had a superficial, complete piece of crap storyline built upon Hollywood cliches. The only reason the IP is worth a dime outside of the gaming world is its brilliant art direction. In my eyes, no director can screw up a narrative experience that was worthless in the first place.

<![CDATA[EA and New Line Extend LOTR License]]> 720px-Horse-racing-4.jpg

Electronic Arts renewed the license to create more games within the world of Lord of the Rings, the company announced today.

The deal with New Line Cinema means the company will be releasing new LOTR titles this year, EA said.

"The Lord of the Rings is an incredible canvas to create epic games," said Frank Gibeau, EA's executive vice president and general manager of North American publishing. "We look forward to our next project with New Line Cinema and Tolkien Enterprises scheduled to ship in 2008."

"We have a long history of making great games with EA and are thrilled to extend our longstanding relationship," said David Imhoff, New Line's senior executive vice president of worldwide licensing and merchandising. "We look forward to working closely with EA to create even more compelling Lord of the Rings adventures in the future."

Can't wait for that Lord of the Rings driving game.

<![CDATA[The Number 23 Could Win You a Wii]]> In conjunction with the release of their new film, The Number 23, starring Jim Carrey, New Line Cinema is giving away a Wii and all you have to do to enter is send in your story about the number 23. In the spirit of the film, New Line is playing mysterious with the contest using this "cryptic" message to promote the contest.

Do you have a story about the number 23? Tell us for your chance to win a game console that begins with the 23rd letter in the alphabet. Good Luck.

The 23rd letter in the alphabet... hmmm... It was a tough nut to crack, but with the help of my Little Orphan Annie decoder I was able to deduce that they meant the letter "W" which then led me at first to the PS3. Then I realized that "P" wasn't "W" and made the logical leap that it must be the Wii.

So, write that great story about your 23rd birthday when you drank those 23 rum and cokes, got really drunk, went to Krystal and ate 23 tiny burgers and then spent the next 23 hours throwing up. If that doesn't win, I don't know what will.
