Atari: Witchers, RPGs, Cooks, and ... Deer Hunters

3:55 PM, the LA Convention Center. Everyone is tired, and you can see the media room starting to slow down — people wander by with exhausted expressions on their faces, looking at their watches and lighting up when they realize there's not much left in the day. Even Crecente has passed the point of being totally with it, pausing in the middle of sentences to stare off into space. I shuffle off to check out Atari's E3 offerings, and am met with a surprisingly cheerful staff who point me in the direction of caffeine. I am not caffeinated enough to face a spiel on Deer Hunter Tournament, so I'm sat down to await a demonstration of The Witcher: Enhanced Edition. I hear something about transport options from the person enthusiastically imbibing what the Deer Hunter guy is saying — 'Oh cool, so you're planning on having like, ATVs and stuff?' — and am glad I'm parked in front of The Witcher instead of one screen over. More impressions and details after the jump: More »

New Neverwinter Nights 2 Expansion In Development

It's been quietly (very quietly) announced that a new expansion pack for classic PC title Neverwinter Nights 2 is in development at Obsidian. Called Storm of Zehir, it brings some pretty considerable changes to the game, like "full party customization, dungeon crawling, and free exploration of a non-linear game world via an Overland Map". No idea on a release date, but seeing as the game's nearly three years old, I'm sure you can wait it out.

Five Tips For Not Making a Crappy Game

This month's Wired has a look at MMO Arden: The World of William Shakespeare. Holy Hell, That's a Long Machinima: BloodSpell

Have 84 minutes to kill? No? Me neither. But if I did, I'd wade in and take a look at the feature-length cut of the BloodSpell machinima by Strange Company (directed by Hugh Hancock) - it's long, it's been four years in development all told, and seems like one hell of an ambitious project. I did take a short gander at it, and if the whole 84 minutes is as nicely put together as the short bit I watched, it's probably worth a looksee. The machinima was made with the Neverwinter Nights engine. It's also being released under Creative Commons: More »

Neverwinter Nights 2 Expands Into Westgate

Atari and Obsidian Entertainment may have just recently released Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer, but they aren't sitting around throwing pizza parties and patting each other on the back. No, they are busy readying the first downloadable adventure pack for the game, Mysteries of Westgate. Taking place in the Forgotten Realms city of Westgate, the adventure pack launches players into a clash between warring city-factions as they attempt to relieve themselves of a cursed item that could destroy them. The pack features the Night Masks, a league of assassins first encountered in book 3 of R. A. Salvatore's Cleric Quintet entitled, aptly enough, Night Masks. Promising over 15 hours of new gameplay, 3 new companions, and an entirely new musical score, Mysteries of Westgate is the beginning of the natural evolution of the first NWN's premium module program. The pack should go on sale via Atari sometime this fall. More »

BioWare Wants You!

If you're a BioWare fan and fancy yourself a designer, this could be the perfect opportunity for you. BioWare is currently on the hunt for a world designer for their upcoming MMO that's being developed in Austin, Texas. To help them along in the process, they are holding a contest to see who can create the best module using the Neverwinter Nights 1 Aurora Toolset. But, there's more to world design than pretty scenery and cool characters, and you can bet Bioware will be scrutinizing every entry. More »

Neverwinter Nights 2 Gameplay Footage

Some new footage of the upcoming multiplayer RPG Neverwinter Nights 2 has found its way to YouTube. Although apparently taking place in a fairy-elf fantasy world where the sun has completely been extinguished and the illumination only gloams from blacklights, what portions of the video can actually been seen are quite attractive.

Neverwinter Nights Gets Put To Pasture

It couldn't last forever and obviously it hasn't: Bioware has confirmed that Atari has pulled the plug on the Neverwinter Nights premium module program. They've also said 'no' to any further patches. Any modules that were in development for the premium program have officially been canceled, although don't be surprised if you see them get a free release. More »

Infinite Dungeons Premium Module for NWN

At first, I reacted to the news that Bioware would be releasing premium content modules for Neverwinter Nights (already a game bordering on obsolescence) with suspicion: it seemed like an attempt to milk gamers out of money for something the mod community generates for free. But I was glad to be proven wrong. The premium modules are consistently excellent and their existence has allowed Bioware to continue to support NWN long past the point most games are no longer profitable. More »
