As someone working quite a bit in flash (albeit most with animations) the problem was never the economy. It was their choice to make a 3D MMO in flash. Flash isn't a 3D-based medium. And while I am certain you can make it with some more advanced actionscripts, it's far from preferable. It handles fake 3D a-la Vectrex a lot better, but I don't think that is what the people behind it was planning.
@ShadowOdin: I think some people are confused about what this was supposed to be.
The way I understand it; "While the main game will be a fully-developed 3D PC title, players will be able to interact with the game world via mobile applications, games, and web-based mini-games that will have an impact on the in-game world."
For example; "...a player [achieves] a high score in the web-based Hungry Junkworm game, which in turn unleashes a giant Junkworm in game which starts attacking players there."
