This guy is a COO-for-hire douchebag. Remember him laughing at the suggestion of Shenmue 3? God forbid the company he runs has a passionate fanbase. He should fit right in at mediocre iPhone developer #210293.
@cornunderscore2x: ngmoco is actually a quality developer. i believe theyre more about pushing the device than making a quick buck.. them and gameloft (which is really just ubisofts mobile division) are the only big time devs taking the device seriously.
@Svend Joscelyne: I believe you've made a history cocktail. :p I don't mean to be rude, but do you know what you're talking about? SoA wanted the Dreamcast to continue given great success in NA and Europe; SoJ pulled the plug citing debt as the reason to get out of the hardware business. The only thing SoA killed was the Saturn (which I consider a mercy killing); SoJ ended the lives of the Genesis and Dreamcast.
@Kobun: although the jp saturn was the most successful sega console in its homeland. man i loved that thing, it probably would have done much better here if bernie stolar (idiot) hadnt banned lots of 2d games and rpgs. tom kalinske for life.
@Kobun: Huh. I could have sworn Moore has said in interviews that he pushed the whole 'console dropout' thing forward. I may have mis-remembered things from this post: [kotaku.com]
I guess you could say SoJ killed the Dreamcast in terms of targets-or-bust ultimatums, or SoA/Moore (to a much much lesser degree) for coming back to them and saying they couldn't meet said targets.
Thanks for the clearup though. Honestly, I do know Sega things, I just get confused easily. :D
@Svend Joscelyne: The full interview basically makes it sound as though SoJ stated it was canceling the Dreamcast due to finance issues and stated that for it to continue production as SoA wanted, SoA would have to sell a ludicrous amount of units to cover the losses.
@shouryuuken: Kalinske has noted in a Sega-16 interview this divide among SoJ and SoA, given how quickly the company was willing to axe the Genesis and Dreamcast, both quite successful systems but not so much in Japan. I think the premature death of the Genesis and Sega's mismanagement of the Saturn (both SoJ and SoA) really killed the Saturn. It's why I defend Stolar -- the man put the Saturn out of its misery and successfully resold consumers on the Sega brand, making the Dreamcast a success. You can't argue with his record; his decisions in large part made the PlayStation and Dreamcast the successes they were. It was 3-D which sold the more expensive new consoles to people, not 2-D, and he understood that. Show the consumers what they're missing out on and give them a reason to upgrade.
SoA seems like a ghost these days, and look at how SoJ continues to mismanage the company. There's no question that the best Sega games and its most known output comes from Japan, but the powers that me have to be among the most incompetent I've ever seen.
If I grow one of those simulated neckline goatees, can I become president of Sega, too? It's been a dream of mine. I'd do it in a heartbeat, or at least in the shortest amount of time it'd take me to grow the thing on my chin.
@Xenris: You don't find the president of a major publisher leaving his position to work on iPhone games even moderately interesting or indicative of possible market changes?
@Xenris: Whenever there's a Sega game from Japan you're dying to see in the U.S., his replacement might be a lot of say on greenlighting its localization. Worst case scenerio, Sega will pass, but will allow another company to bring it over. Isn't that what's happening to Sakura Taisen?
@bableebooblah-new and improved.: House of the Dead and Madworld are great Wii games (also valkyrie chronicles is awesome), but the fact remains that Sega is NOT doing well. This dude is probably just looking out for his own ass.
it's always a good move to look out for yourself, but with all the good games that sega is now publishing that is bound to make money, how could they NOT be doing well?
@bableebooblah-new and improved.: we really cant tell the future, and althought the conduit, bayonetta, and... well crap i dunno.. okay those 2.. although they look good.. who knows how theyll do. i dont think either one is a million seller to be honest.. if the conduit is really fun multiplayer wise.. itll probably crack a million due to the lack of competiton..
Sega is doing awesome these days, why someone would leave such a high-up position to work with an iPhone game company is far beyond any logic I can muster.
@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: I think Sega's doing fairly well myself, but someone will point out that the company is just publishing those games. Actual releases from the company's development teams are in rather short supply of late.
That screenshot reminds me of GoldenEye. However, I still maintain that serious gaming is not worth even attempting on the iPhone; the controls and battery life are just not a good fir.
